I was fortunate to have seen Greg perform this, From The Beginning and Court Of The Crimson King a few years ago with Ringo Starr's Allstar Band. Thank for the video(s).
Thanx for doing this took me back to just out of high school me and a buddy playing this out in a parking lot teens all hung out in when you could still do that wonderful era of music ❤👍✌🤘
Shutup & Play - guitar tutorials ... it's only just, a little bit of love and appreciation, Andy. Some motivation and positive reinforcement to keep you going at it. It's a calling, and you're on track. Your style is easy-going, accessible and invitingly welcome...
Damn! This is some serious, no nonsense skill, and some serious, no nonsense artistry! Greg and Keith would indeed be very proud, and I too am humbled by the spot-on precision and accuracy of this great guitar lesson. I'm nearly 70-years old now, one of many forgotten or discounted Vietnam vets, but I had the great fortune of seeing ELP perform live in concert multiple times, in those earliest years, and like many others of my time, I too will join Greg and Keith in the hereafter, but that very special time in American history, will be with me, in heart and spirit, forever.
I am a recent subscriber to your channel and am saddened at the loss of Greg Lake as of recent. What better way to show appreciation for his life and work than to learn one of his most popular songs. Thank you for making this possible for someone without formal musical training.
I've been playing this song for years just strumming the chords. Now I have some great ideas for arrangements using my looper. Thanks. This is one of my favorite songs to perform.
Great tutorial as always. It sounds decent in E Flat tuning as well (have 3 other songs on the go that are in E flat so I left it tuned that way). You are by far the most meticulous instructor I’ve come across and I mean that in the best possible way. At 60 years old, I’m able to take away a lot from your videos. Thank you!
Great tutorial! Lucky Man, I remember the first time I heard that song in 1970, it blew me away. Thanks for the tip on the Drop D it sounds so much better and more full. I’ve played this for years but never tried it in drop D!
"Shutup & Play" tutorials for acoustic guitar are the best I've seen on RU-vid-- I think they're fantastic. With all due respect, though, I would like to make one correction on this tutorial, and ONLY one. During the chorus, (Am, Em, D) the Em is actually an Em7. I've watched several live performances of Greg Lake performing this song. Sometimes he used the drop-D tuning, in which case the fingering is different than when he performed it in standard tuning. But when he used standard tuning, one can see his finger playing the note "D" on the 3rd fret of the B string during the Em chord, which makes it an Em7. Other than that, I think the musician in this video absolutely nailed the song. I also think he did a fabulous job of teaching it.
My first Concert in the early 1970s may be 74 ELP at the Rose Garden Portland Oregon changed my life forever after that followed Greatful Dead, Willie & Wylon and too many to count now 63 so many good shows and it all started with this song.
I consider myself very fortunate to see them playing in Mar y Sol Festival 1972 Puerto Rico, they played Lucky Man and most of the Trilogy album songs, I think I was a Lucky Man too, thank you for your great tutorials.
Yes echoing another’s comment on the quality of your vids. Top notch, very detailed. It’s worth pointing out, that I think the original could be a 12 string?
Thanks for taking the time to show variations of how to play that same song. I feel like a lucky man for finding your tutorials. Well done and so perfectly demonstrated! Much appreciated!
I came to playing guitar relatively late and your tutorials have not only helped me improve my technique, but also enabled me to play songs I have long loved and admired from my youth. a BIG "Thank-You"

If you look here on RU-vid, look for the demo videos for EHX pedals. You can play all the synth parts with just the guitar. No special pickups needed. They have one that demonstrates their use in this song..
I was watching Greg play this Live version. Thanks for the drop D idea it sounds much better playing it that way! He is hammering a lot on the 3rd string 2nd fret index finger throughout.
Wonderfully entertaining, informative, and loving tutorial on a classic tune by one of the preeminent progressive rock bands of the last generation.....so kudos, bravo, etc. Your channel/work-product are outstanding. Can I offer a couple of thoughts? Your tutorial captures the double tracking of the guitar part .... the fullness of the acoustic guitar in the recording made me wonder whether Lake used a 12-string, but your video with the Drop-D tuning and high-end acoustic suggests one can get pretty close to the recording with a couple of 6-string guitars or a blended arrangement perhaps. The tone you derive in the video is incredibly good. Other thought relates to mimicking the Emerson synth solo at the end in the guitar by incorporating the descending and ascending bass line that Keith takes in the initial keyboard passages. Makes the Am to Em progression more full. When performing live, Lake could make it easy by using chords only; other times, the guy arpeggiated or finger picked when accompanying himself. He was something.
Great song and great teaching , If you ever get a chance to do a song , it would be great to learn \ YOU and ME by Moody Blues / for me it is one great tune that never grows old . Thanks
WOW ! after years of playing this song you've showed me that the hammer on from the G chord is on the D string, I've been hammering on the A string, your method is authentic, thank you, now my version sounds more authentic.
I somehow suspect that the dislikes are from those eclectic electric cacophonous 3 chorders who have little grasp of theory but then again there is no accounting for taste ...I, however, do like & admire your persona and have rarely worked with anyone who had the personality AND the skill to share so thank you & my PayPal will thank you, Sir!
You are such a wonderful teacher. Thank You. I'm a beginning guitar player at age 61 and this is one of the songs I really want to learn how to play since I love all of Greg Lakes acoustic songs.
Coming back to the guitar after 10 years and you have made it so much enjoyable and easier to understand. Excellent lessons. Simplified, patient and explanatory. Keep up the great work.
Fué y es uno de mis mejores grandes grupos de rock progresvio que oí e intenté tocar con 16 años. Su calidad y sensibilidad de quedaron conmigo para siempre.
Hi, thank you so much for this lesson, it's really great. I'm working my way through it. One thing you might find interesting to listen to again is the right channel part, it has some additional variations. It's just how you describe it in the intro, and first and second chorus and verse. During the guitar solo over the third verse, the G arpeggio is the same, but D arpeggio is strummed and alternated with Dsus4. The strumming is slightly different in the chorus. The fourth verse/chorus is the same as the first and second. The fifth verse uses the same G arpeggio, followed by the open D, then a strum on the upper three strings of the D chord. On the last repeat of the verse, just the open D is sounded. The following chorus sounds different to me, I have no idea of what he's doing but the voicings sound somewhat different. There's a lot of variation in the outro strumming on the right channel part. Again, thanks so much for this lesson, I'd have never picked up on the stuff you cover. Amazing to me how this song is called "easy" or "simple" by most books and people, to me, it's complex and rich.
