I asked this same question and actually got a reply from Tulok. The UA Ranger doesn't naturally get Extra Attack (it's tied to conclaves), so you need to use PHB Ranger if you want Extra Attack on a Horizon Walker.
@@Dramatic_Gaming That was the case when the revised ranger was originaly released in Unearthed Arcana 18. As new ranger subclasses enter palytest in UA28, the one where the Horizon Walker was originaly released for playtest, it was stated that if you were using the revised ranger the only diference was o include an extra attack at lv5 Here is the link dnd.wizards.com/articles/unearthed-arcana/ranger-and-rogue
@@ChobinoftheFunk True, but as stated in the every Unearthed Arcana, AL characters cant use any playtest content, so whenever you talk about Unearthed Arcana content, like the revised ranger, something this channel does all the time, AL is already out by default.
I see your Ranger/Cleric and raise you a Shadow Monk/Hexblade Warlock. You still get Swordplay though you'll have to wield one instead of two. BUT It can EASILY be RP'd as the Soul Sword from the comics. You still get Blink at Hexblade lvl 6 and level 6 Shadow monk is free misty step every turn. The monk also adds a missing aspect from your build.... Nightcrawler's unarmed strikes/kicks. And Hexblade level 10 Armor of Hexes makes Nighcrawler EVEN HARDER to hit. You could still get religion and some of the other flavor from backgrounds and things. Oh... and there's the Shroud of Shadow invocation. Invisibility at will without using spell slots. More "teleport" flavor.
I’m surprised that the shadow archetype for monk wasn’t utilized at all. As they can teleport around in dim and darker areas, cast darkness/pass without trace using ki, plus would complement his unarmed style of fighting.
@@omegagilgamesh I think they meant that in the comics, Nightcrawler dual wields rapiers (sometimes sabres, so scimitars might be okay). He's a fan of swashbuckling movies and sometimes dresses as a pirate for fun.
That's what I love about this channel. We all expected you to go one route, and you showed us an avenue that we didn't notice before. My father taught me to always know 5 ways to get somewhere and back. You've obviously been given the same advice and use it.
Uh... *remembers scrambling to find a way to get Blink, finding it on the Trickery list and thanking the dear lord that Nighcrawler became a priest* yes.
I love Nightcrawler, there’s a tabletop game at my gaming store... With starting at a level one, I wonder how many sessions/levels I can go before people figure it out!
It depends on whether you use a German accent or not. If you describe your character as blue with a tail and a German accent, any fans of the X-Men will immediately pick up on it.
ruben sustaita I was doing that more so so eldritch blast could be his eye beam. For sure variant human maybe inspiring leader because he’s the leader of the x-men team
I understand completely not wanting to use shadow monk, but a single monk level just for unarmored AC seems too useful to pass up. Two levels would get you two ki points for patient defense, making you really impossible to hit for a couple of rounds. Three levels you could deflect missiles, get agile parry from kensei (yes kensai not shadow) and, most importantly, calligraphy.
I think the main issue is that monks just don't pick up much teleportation potential at all and that is basically the most iconic mutation Nightcrawler has.
@@hamsterratje I do get that. The limit on shadow to shadow is tricky though since that can be very limited depending on the terrain and local things. If your teleportation can be shut down by a couple well placed light cantrips, then that can't be a consistent plan.
Yeah, but mage armor could be flavored to be nimbleness. Really, shadow sorcerer gets you all the teleportation and defense spells while swashbuckler rogue gets you the attack and maneuverability you'll need. True, you're only getting one attack per round, but it's an alpha strike with xd6 sneak attack. (And swashbuckler lets you move away without OAs)
@@ericpeterson8732 Patient defense, agile parry, and missile deflection can all be flavored as teleportation abilities and/or nimbleness., plus unarmoured defense when your two primary stats are dex and wis. AND CALLIGRAPHY.
For nightcrawler I immediately thought swashbuckler rogue plus Conjuration wizard. He's literally been a pirate lately. And you still get all the teleport spells. And STEEL WIND STRIKE which is basically the most nightcrawler spell in the game (other than maybe blink). His build is really clever though. It totally fits but it's not what I saw coming at all
Weekly Build Request: I would love to see a character build for Stain the Hero Killer from My Hero Academia. A Rogue/Fighter with Hold Person sounds brutal.
I totally expected to see the shadow monk class in this build. Shadow monks have martial arts, teleporting and monks can be flavored as religious. What you built works, but I would have liked to see Kurt with more hand to hand and monk mobility abilities.
In the early comics, Nightcrawler has a holographic disguise watch very similar to the one Deadpool uses in volume 1 of his run. Disguise Self is actually a perfect addition. I do disagree with giving him two swords though. The swords were mostly an Age of Apocalypse thing. This would be like giving Batman the creation spells to simulate the Green Lantern ring he had in "In Darkest Knight". Don't get me wrong, you've made a very good Nightcrawler-295. but if I want a Nightcrawler-616, 92131, 11052, or 10005 like most of your footage is of, I think you need some monk...
This was a video I didn't know I needed until it was recommended to me and now I'm beyond excited to play Nightcrawler in my next game! I'll just name him... Kurrt and no one will know I'm playing my favorite fuzzy blue elf rather than an original character.
was playing last night and had my first nightcrawler feel moment during a fight, playing a lvl 5 whisper bard - lvl 5 hexblade warlock, so much fun bamfing to rooftops to take out the hidden archers
Currently playing a “Gambit” Tri-brid of 8 open-hand, 5 thief, 3 eldritch knight (will be 7 EK by the end). Variant human magic initiate (warlock) EB, minor Illusion, Charm person. Not a min/maxed build but I enjoy it. www.dndbeyond.com/profile/Traituswhisperstep/characters/7750327
As per usual great build. I wanna recommend making elfo from disenchantment since my little brother is getting into dnd and he told me he wants to play as elfo.
Ok memes aside, would be really interested on how you would build Sans. Aside from a personal challenge to see how low your HP can be by 20th lv, he actually has a lot of interesting things going for him. You need your blue attacks, your bone attacks, and don't forget the Shortcuts.
I have a few more requests (most of these aren’t serious requests, though): 1) Buckaroo Banzai 2) Rick Sanchez 3) Finn the Human 4) the Joker 5) Ichigo Kurosaki 6) Johan Liebert 7) Santa Claus 8) Baron Samedi 9) Dr. Doom 10) Steven Universe
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 I'm pretty excited to hear that. I've been watching all of these and I look forward to every new episode that you release. Do you have Episode 100 planned? (I know you aren't gonna tell me what it is until it comes out to keep it a surprise, but I hope you have something special locked away for such a big milestone)
I realize we're using only main player handbook classes, but if you check out Unearthed Arcana you could use the Mystic class which was basically designed exactly to be Nightcrawler, specifically the Nomad I believe, as all its abilities are teleport based. There's also a subclass of Mystic from unearthed arcana designed to be Psylocke, and im pretty sure Xavier fits in there with most of the mind power things. Basically its the go to class for x-men.
having the final spread show up on a short lived character sheet on the end of the video could be a cool thing to do for visual boyos like myself, espiially since i am not a fast enough typer for making this while you talk also love that you made the best demon boy, thank you ^_^
Just going to say that with the Class Variant Features UA, you can replace Favoured Enemy with the ability to cast Hunter's Mark a few times per long rest without concentration, replace Natural Explorer with a Expertise, extra movement speed, or some temporary hit points. You can also get a lot of free spells instead of Primeval Awareness. And there's some other things at higher levels. Makes PHB ranger more manageable. I prefer it even to Revised if I'm honest.
I built a nightcrawler character like a year ago, 6 shadow monk(min, 8= 2 asi’s) 12 swashbuckler. 14 gets you blindsense if I remember correctly which would allow you to somewhat use the darkness of shadow monk. Horizon walker was the alternative at least to 12 for the distant strike.
I've suggested this before and I will continue to suggest this. Big Boss/Solid Snake build! I want a sneaky rogue mixed with the CQC and grappling of a monk, as well as the leadership to turn captured soldiers into alleys and the weapon proficiency of every weapon to be a true soldier on a battlefield that is ever-changing.
Shadow Monk 9/ Hexblade 3/ Battlemaster 8. I'd probably pick the acolyte background to take care of his religious tendencies. That is how I would work a level 20 Nightcrawler build I think
nice! could you do giorno giovanna? i’m really excited to see what you could do to replicate 7 pages worth of “MUDA” and how absolutely busted gold experience requiem is.
Count Golden Experience as a Cleric/Mystic Hireling that shares its HP pool with your character. Otherwise, Giorno's lack of relevant Rogue XP levels will seriously hamper GE's ability to survive a Stand Battle.
I am currently working on an entire Joestar set, starting with Jotaro and Giorno. Not sure where to submit or share them, I guess I could learn how to record my own videos? lol
@@arcanejazz Tumblr or Reddit would probably be the places to go. I put the first draft of my Goro Akechi build on Tumblr, I'll probably do Reddit too once it's refined a bit.
I tried making him, but Giorno's so OP that it couldn't be accurate. I made him a half-elf for the extra skills, put 12 levels into Astral Self Monk to give him his Stand, and 8 into Druid so he can conjure animals and plants.
I made a build as well for Nightcrawler. Though it does require lifting a restriction. It was 18 bladesinger wizard/2 rogue. Take all of the spells you can that let you teleport or something similar like passwall. 1st level spell mastery can be whatever you like while 2nd level spell mastery is misty step so you can bamf all you like. Take those rogue levels for expertise in acrobatics and religion as well as cunning action. Get some slippers of spiderclimb so you can crawl on walls like the blue devil himself. So you get the ability to bamf whenever you like, get decent AC and initiative (especially if you take alert if you roll for stats and get good stats), as well as the versatility of wizard spellcasting. Is it the most in character flavourwise? Not really. But it does get a good amount of the things required for Nightcrawler
Ive been making Gambit from x-men for awhile now and and i started with 1 lvl of sorcerer then 1 lvl of rogue or 3 to get theif archetype, then the rest sorcerer, i had him have 3 packs of metal playing cards in his backstory and i said he got the heatmetal spell when getting taught by a druid when his adopted father the leader of a theif clan had master spell casters come in and try and trigger stuff when gambits father saw gambit had powers. Heat metal with the cards would be i think an ok replica of the kinetic charged cards especially if you do a magenta dragon draconic ancestry
I like it! My strategy? Kensei monk for monk weapons (to reskin the Cards in RAW), then magical Kensei weapons at level 6, and ki empowered strikes to put some kinetic energy into everything. Then maybe some Paladin if you can swing the stats for divine smites as a beefy staff hit? Would be not great mixing the two classes, so maybe just go rogue for extra damage on your ranged attacks.
Actually in XMen Evolution Kurt (Nightcrawler) had a hologram projector that change his appearance. This allowed him too fit in better and fits with disguise self quite nicely.
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 Yeah, but at least she knows her son would be safe. Plus with so many iterations of Mystique I personally go off of the Evolutuons character because she's more interesting.
I found an interesting way to play off the short Bamf. We skin changed the cunning action Disengage because you cant be hit. We keep the misty steps for when you need to change elevation
Gonna guess before watching, a few levels of Fiend Warlock for Hurl through Hell (He DOES Bamf through hell after all and CAN decide to just leave someone there as he pops through). And then either Arcane Trickster, Shadow monk, or Conjuration Wizard for his teleporting. Not too sure where to pull sword skills from, though aren't shortswords Simple weapons to count as Monk weapons? So that'd work... I could also potentially see Bard being used a bit. Tiefling race OFC
I'm currently running a Celestial Warlock / Divine Soul Sorcerer who, upon reaching Warlock level 9 (Sorcerer 3). can now take Geater Restoration and no longer needs to sleep as a consequence (Greater Restoratoration removes Exhaustion). I can then spend all day short-resting and converting warlock spell slots into Sorcery Points and back again into extra level 2 Spell Slots. For every 24h spent doing this, I accumulate 45 level 2 spell slots. Most of my spells are now essentially Cantrips, including a level 2 Cure Wounds and Healing Word, but most importantly: Misty Step. I can basically Bampf every round as a bonus action.
Watching this video it occurred to me that Mirror Image would make a good D&D Shadow Clone Jutsu for a Naruto build! Love the channel, Tulok, especially my favorite Marvel heroes like Kurt, Wade, and Cap!
A build that I wanna see done would definitely be Jack Black’s character, Eddie Riggs, from the game Brutal Legend. Just the idea of a bard wielding a giant axe and screaming “DECAPITATION!!!” sounds badass to me.
You know, I was just starting to think that I had to come up with a Nightcrawler build, trying to follow your usual guidelines, and it took shockingly long for me to actually check if you had done one already. Pretty awesome build, too; only problem is, I feel like there has to be at least some Swashbuckler in there. Probably wouldn't be as effective or BAMF-y a build, though.
Loved the video. Only sigh I got was of course the mention to the still groan-inducing philosophy they gave Mystique in the movies where she talks all about being Mutant and proud when her mutant power is LITERALLY being able to find the fact she is a mutant.
Yeah, same. No idea honestly. Etherealness is the spell to use for it, but that's 7th level, which means 13 levels of some kind of caster. And I dont know what other spells to give her?
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 perhaps: •Misty Step - and flavor it as if you see her, but she's phasing through the space? •Some Kind of Plane shift, like maybe she phased through a weak spot in the planes? •Dimension Door - there is a weird comic spot where she phased against the planet's rotation and traveled to another coast practically. •Maybe some kind of Fire or warlock with a pet, to embody Lockheed? •And perhaps a bit of martial skill for her combat training and maybe a sword due to the soulsword. •Maybe even something to negate difficult terrain (chalk it up to phasing through it). •Perhaps a resistance to force, slashing, bludgeoning, and piercing damage, as only certain things and magic hurt her while phasing? I'm not really good at meshing the things together, or even figuring out the best path to grab any of that. But those are just some ideas that popped up.
Episode 83 of the Fire Emblem stats: Kurt Wagner. Nightcrawler ironically enough is proficient in faith (due to warp magic) and swords (cutlasses). He's bad at riding and flying because he's much faster by himself. He has high speed, luck (due to popping up from place to place), and dexterity, but is pretty frail in terms of physical defenses and HP.
I think that Nightcrawler is a monk than a ranger instead, and if you want to add some cleric levels is of a domain that seek redemption. In all case I love your videos, keep making it.
With all the teleporting and swordplay, now I *really* wanna see Vergil! I feel like maybe F. Aasimar-Hexblade/Divine Sorcerer with something else. Maybe Conquest Paladin to be thematic. Worship your demon father or something. Though triple multi-clasting is a bit scary. Trouble is none of these classes get Steel Wind Strike, which is 1 for 1 Judgment Cut End.
I know you're going for the tail with feral teifling, but I feel elves still fit Kurt in D&D and the Shadar-Kai have an innate teleportation ability in the form on "Blessing of the Raven Queen" so you can teleport from level one. This would also allow you to take fey teleportation at some point for another free misty step if you'd like.
I could see that, but seeing how in several of the canon settings, Kurt's father is literally the demon Azazel it's a hard sell not to make him a tiefling.
@@josephperez2004 I know, which I why I stated I knew where he was coming from with teifling, but you can always wright a backstory which makes sense with the world and gives homage to the character. Who says all tieflings are of human decent? You could have devil blood and just not mechanically be a tiefling.
Pretty awesome build! Nightcrawler is my second favorite X-Man, right behind Beast. While I'm interested to see how you would make a blue-haired scientist with blades, claws, and fangs, I'm just happy to get this one. Btw, I'm going to predict Starfire for next week. No clue who the other one is.
For Beast, my first instincts say go with the Shifter race (from Wayfinder's Guide) they are a race of humans you can take on animalistic traits giving you certain buffs based on what you choose. As for class... Monk for Close Range fighting and agility (though I don't know how well that fits), Barbarian for Rage fighting (if you want to be animalistic Beast but I'm still not sure), or maybe Blood Hunter (Order of the Lycan) to pull off the blue fur transformations and fight like a savage animal (the transformation fits very well but the rest of the class feels iffy for Beast).
Oh my God, I'm so happy!! I love X-Men and Mystiqueand her sometimes children are some of my faves. Thank you so much!!! 8D Quick question, if you were to build the Gems from Steven Universe would you make them all from the same race or would you change it from character to character?
I would love to see Character Build for the KonoSuba guys (Kazuma, Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness). Might be a fun challenge to try to make the worst characters in D&D.
Gonna keep asking for Morgana from League cause she deserves it, also AASIMAR REPRESENTATION! If you're considering anyone else from the comic book universes, though, I'll ask for Zatanna. She's cool.
You make a better case for Ranger than I thought but I would have gone with either Arcane Trickster Rogue or Swashbuckler Rogue. For requests how about Conan the Barbarian keeping in mind that in D&D terms he's more a Brute Fighter with a few Thief/Rogue levels than a Barbarian, something I'm sure you'd have fun with. Also, since you've done a lot of Star Wars characters may I suggest trying some Star Trek characters, especially OST. Kirk and Spock (the original half-elf) particularly come to mind.
One character ive always wanted to see become a DnD character, but have no idea how, is Bayonetta. She is such a badass, and while I can guess how somethings would work, others are just sooo hard to figure out.
I feel like going cleric is pointless. Just go Horizon Ranger (13) and then Swashbuckler Rogue (7) for evasion, 1v1 sneak attack, and uncanny dodge Edit: Kurt had an entire storyarc on being a swashbuckler. Also you wanna get the Horizon Walker teleport when attacking ability asap
I think that's a cool take, heres why I chose cleric: Spell slots for more misty steps Dimension Door for teleporting with a buddy Blink for hard to hit teleport shenanigans But sneak attack, uncanny dodge and evasion would all be very Nightcralwer, no doubt
@@tulokthebarbrarian2033 oh yup i agree with getting more spell slots. Its just a matter of whether someone thinks the short ranged ranger blink suffices the teleporting
It's a good build, although warlock levels wouldn't hurt - pact of blade/hexblade, at-will invisibility through invocations and Spider-Climb spell (Nightcrawler can stick to walls like Spider-Man can).
Currently playing a horizon walker ranger in tomb of annihilation (ranger is amazing for chult). We're only level 8, but definitely thinking about dipping into trickery cleric just for this build xoxo
So, if someone were to maybe want to offer potential build concepts on the mechanical side to you, great overlord of combining nerddoms, how might that happen? Asking for a super nerdy friend who’s spent waaay too many hours reading 5e source manuals and unearthed arcana, heh... For instance, alternative Kurt: 6 Shadow Monk, 7 Fiend Chain-Warlock (Hexblade could work, but since he’s being traded out as an Elf, Fiend fits better thematically), 7 Swashbuckler Rogue. Feral Tiefling is admittedly a much more literal fit for Kurt, but since Logan keeps calling him an elf, and there’s several needed ability scores and feats at play, consider Dark Elf. Standard point array: Str8, Dex15 (then add +2 from Dark Elf), Con 12, Int10, Wis14, Cha13 (add +1 from Dark Elf) Level 7 Warlocks get Dimension Door, twice per short rest, and grab a Imp Familiar, call it a Bamf (also, if you cast Darkness on your Bamf, they can see through it and make mobile Darkness), grab the Invocations Armor of Shadows (replace with Relentless Hex or Gift of the Ever Living Ones if Wis is 16 or higher), Devil’s Sight (VERY IMPORTANT), One With Shadows, and Voice of the Chain Master; Level 6 Shadow Monks get infinite buffed Misty Steps while in dim light or darkness (and can cast Darkness via Ki, also short rest), as well as unarmed combat and Extra Attacks (tail work); Swashbucklers fit into comic Nightcrawlers strong Errol Flynn vibe, and give a lot of helpful boosts to combat. For ASIs (3 total), look at Elven Accuracy Feat for super advantage while attacking from teleport and/or Darkness, bump up Dex to 18 (if you rolled high enough to max it, focus on Wis and then Cha). If you feel like it, Drow High Magic is nice even if it’s not exactly in theme, but Defensive Duelist is VERY much in theme, and anything else should go into maxing out Dex, then Wis and Cha. Go Urchin for Background, neither mommy or daddy really took care of Kurt, gives Slight of Hand and Stealth. Start off Rogue for the Saves and Skills (you’ll have Perception already from Elf), take Acrobatics, Athletics, Persuasion, and (because 5e has a cool mechanic about what happens when you pick a class skill that you already have via race or background, you can simply pick ANY OTHER skill) pick up Religion. Grab a rapier and go H.A.M. with kicks and tail flicks. And that’s the rough build. There’s a bunch of other small details, like Expertise and other specific Spell picks, but that could go on a really long time. So, thoughts?
I think Edward Elric would be an awesome build. Pulling from the Full Metal Alchemist manga and Brotherhood anime would have a lot of cool still to do. I'm thinking transmutation wizard and monk.
I think he made it before this came out, but I think echo knight fighter is a great way to have efficient teleport. It doesn’t work well with dual wielding though, but neither does this one because of the bonus action economy
Since you said Stars as a clue to your next builds. I'm hoping that's a hint towards Chris Redfield being one of the builds. As I think for Chris a Paladin X Rouge build or Paladin X Fighter build could work him with Paladin because of the fact Chris like many Resident Evil main protagonists fights zombies and other undead type enemies and Paladin has a lot of abilities that deal extra damage to undead enemies or specializes in killing undead enemies. And either Rouge as the 2nd class if you want to focus on Chris's seemingly super-human sharpshooting skills and tactical skills or Fighter as the 2nd class if you want to focus on Chris basically super-human strength I mean Chris has become recently well-known for being able to decapitate human-sized to medium-sized undead enemies, was able to dislodge a boulder with a few punches, and also during Resident Evil 5 was able to with little effort successfully hit a fully mutated Albert Wesker with a German Suplex. Though I think one of Chris's early abilities he gets as a Variant Human is Crossbow Expertise that way we can accurate with the canon that states Chris and Claire have inherited their family's seemingly super-human sharpshooting skills.
Awesome build. Nightcrawler is probably my favorite of the X-Men. It's too bad there couldn't be more Monk in there as I feel that "thematically" fits more.
Nice build, keep up the good work and congrats on the patron! BTW, you had that poll that included Sherlock in it, when can we expect him? Just curious...
Yo do you think an Ezio from the Assassins Creed series would be possible? Like I know hes an assassin, but he does a lot of fighting and falling from great heights
Love your build, I would have gone with a caster / fighter build myself. In the comics Kurt is one of the best swordsman, Saber or Rapiers, in the Marvel universe and his hand to hand skills are legendary. But your going with the movie version and this is on the money.
I don't know why you use PHB Ranger to get Horizon Walker when you can totally use Revised Ranger for it as well. I can't recall anything saying that you can't. Also, the Dual Wielder feat lets you drop those shortswords for two rapiers to bump up your damage output a bit.
Buffing CON is good, but I'd take the Warcaster feat if I'm going to be having my hands full, unless the DM doesn't bother with requiring a free hand for spellcasting.
