I don't know how a grand piano works, but on an upright piano, if you lower the key slowly there is no sound produced, you have that press in a very specific way.

Great video. What are your thoughts on how to play fast passages more softly? This seems to be most challenging since pressing keys more slowly is more difficult in this context

I think the key here is is to not let go of arm weight and make sure that the piano is being created with the fingers only (playing with a lighter finger touch), however making sure that the shoulders, elbow and arms are in a relaxed position that is not influenced by the piano in the fast passage. Hope this helps! 🤗

Play with more weight/play with less weight... Usually it brings more harm then good, so i agree with you 100%. Excellent video, as always!

Excellent as always ! I cannot agree more with you regarding the wrong use of the soft pedal . It is only a colour device not a dynamic one even if the dynamics are lower because of one ( or two) strings being hit. The proper use of the various pedals is a topic which is not treated seriously enough which is surprising given its paramount importance for the sound. Maybe you could make a video on the various pedalling techniques (sustain, soft, sostenuto) in various contexts: Classical (Beethoven) , Romantic period (Chopin , Schumann) , late 19th - early 20th century (Debussy,Ravel)

Great video, Danae. But I am playing separated notes, so how am I going to distribute the same weight on them? Could I practice slowly on the wood playing three notes at a time? Is this step even really needed to create the perfect soft sound on the piano, Danae? 🤗
2 года назад
Thank you! The step is not necessary, just a possible extra exercise. Of course you could also practice slowly playing three notes at a time and as for playing separated notes, I would say to use imagination. If we imagine playing a legato line (even if our articulation is doing something else), the illusion does translate into the sound. So try to imagine a legato-type weight distribution, even when you are separating the notes! Thanks for watching :)

Great video Danae ,by the way who are your favorite pianists ? I'm gonna tell you my favorites, they are Claudio Arrau, Walter Gieseking, Martha Argerich ,Daniel Barenboim among others !

Which of the Argerich youtube videos would you recommend? Noting the exact place in the piece (e.g., at minute 11.40) would be very helpful.

Hello danae, I think the secret is not to have less tense hands to play a melody so that it turns out well and you will be as relaxed as possible.

Yes that’s a great approach - to basically not be “afraid” of the pianissimo. 👌🏻

🎹 Iinterviewed a teacher who just told me that I must *press the key **_part way_** down* to play pianissimo. But I find that the hammer doesn't throw unless the key is pressed down... virtually all the way.
