Just started playing this sport its so much fun and kinda easier than tennis, great explanation! Didn't realize for the first serve in a 2v2 you can have the teammate serve, i thought it was one serve for the first serve. Good to know!
Good video. Serving and score is one of the more complicated aspects of the game. Here’s some more details that weren’t mentioned to help confuse you even further. The right side facing the net is “even”. That is the side that serves first for /every/ serve. In most cases, especially in tournaments, you flip a coin for who gets first serve and/or which side your team starts with. Details of the coin toss vary amongst tournaments. Secondly, you may “rally” for first serve. It’s usually the person who has a ball in their hand and/or is standing on the “even” side and/or calls “rally for serve” that starts the rally. *side note: don’t be the guy that calls, “rally for serve” and serves it out or in the net. In very informal cases (as in a bunch of beginners that you invited to play for the first time): your ball; you serve first. Finally, in most cases of clubs or school rules. The side of the net that is to the left facing the court from the entrance serves first or the side furthest from the entrance if the courts are vertically arranged. This is the most formal serving rule and the epitome of pickleball etiquette. Ironically, it’s also the easiest one to remember once explained.

Good explanation, makes rules seem simple (and they are). However, a suggestion, when you said, announcing the score as “1-5-2” you said the 2 is the “position” of the server. Some beginners can find that confusing, as many are confused that they can be server 1, then later server 2 in the same game. Saying “.position” sounds like it’s determined by the position ( left or right) on the court. Calling it the “order” of the servers makes more sense to some people. I explain it that when the side wins the serve, the player on the right serves 1st. And is #1. If a point is won, the server switches “position” to the other side, but is still server 1. When serving team faults, the serve goes to player 2 on the team, regardless of the position, left side or right. So it is determined by order, not position. Seems complicated here, since I’m explaining how I teach it, but it is simple when explained in a simple way.
I am new at the sport and find this too fast paced without explanation of some of the terms used. I would redo this at a slower pace and explain more of the terms first.
There is no "re-take" of a so-called 'let-serve'. A serve can hit the net and is playable IF it lands in the appropriate receiving court. If the ball lands in the kitchen then it is a fault. (the announcer stated that a "let-serve" is retaking like in tennnis: wrong info.
I think I missed can you score if you are returning team (like tennis) or only if serving (like Volleyball) Also thanks played yesterday and was a fish out of water!
@@brentingram423 Yes, you can stay in the kitchen all day long as long as you don't volley or get hit by your opponent's return ball:) At least that's my understanding of the game...off now to investigate further!
At the 3 minute mark in the video he incorrectly says you have to exit immediately after hitting the bounced ball in the kitchen. But you do not have to. As indicated by rule 9.g. in the rule book. Other than that this is a great video for beginners to learn the game.
This is the only thing I hate about Pickleball. Only the serving team scores. There is “talk” of changing this rule to be more like volleyball. ( would be so much simpler!)
not being derrogatory but it is so similar to tennis and bad mitton i dont see what the big difference is and you have to have a court which most of us dont have
I’ve never heard of hitting the net on a serve getting a redo if it lands outside the kitchen on the other side. Although I do think that now it counts as a fault in official tournaments. Also I’ve definitely seen people bounce serve? I’ve been playing for a year and never heard those two rules.
The rules were updated recently and they changed a bunch of rules, the net redo being one of them. I am not sure on the bounce rule. I need to examine all the rules that were changed and update the video.
You need to correct the statements about play in the NVZ (the "kitchen"). A player may enter the kitchen at any time (even before the ball bounces) and a player may remain in the kitchen as long as the player desires. The rule only prohibits hitting a volley (aka a ball in the air) while the player is in the kitchen or if the player's momentum while hitting a volley causes the player to enter the kitchen. Your statements were correct as a matter of strategy but not rules prohibitions. That important distinction has resulted in more than a few spirited on-court debates.
I am a “ beginning beginner”. I was told”under NO circumstances “ does one step into the kitchen. I was called on it by one player who had a burning desire to “keep score” on my every move. ( she “knew everything “).
@@zuzu7250 It is a fault if the volleying player or anything that has contact with the volleying player while in the act of volleying, touches the non-volley zone (NVZ aka The Kitchen). If the ball bounces in the NVZ, the player may step into the NVZ to hit the ball.
This game is much more fun if you use racquetball racquets. That's how the old dudes played it at our swim club back in the early 90's. You can put an insane amount of spin on the ball and it plays much faster.
Oh my gosh, I just bought a net, paddles, ball, thought it'd be fun, now, my brain is scrambled. I got you have to have 11 points and must win by 2 and the kitchen area is out-of-bounds, but, the rest, I need to see it written down.
