My advice is to count off while playing examples. Especially when talking about cut time which is 2-2 as opposed to 4-4. Always good to know where 1 is even though it’s ignored.

You are my favorite drum teacher, because you dont only teach the beat, you also tell us something about what you teach. and i have already use that info tons of times in music class and the teacher liked it :D

The first instructor that clearly explained why it's called "One Drop". Drop the one... Of course. I'm just a guitar player that's looking to expand his understanding of all the roles in a band context. So many reggae-related books talk about one-drop and focus on the highlight of the 3-beat, but they never state the obvious - No One Beat! My rant probably doesn't make sense to all you drummer dudes, but there it is. Thanks Stephen!

I think the high expense of ziljdan cymbals probably explains why a lot of underground early reggae and ska tracks had few crashes. Also tapes were used as backing for different acts so the groove was the main thing not accented phrases.... just a thought....
@StephenTaylorDrums
@StephenTaylorDrums Год назад
It actually had to do with recording techniques. Although, cost of instruments was a deal for some things (for instance, many traditional reggae setups may have a mounted coke bottle). Because of how they recorded (in the same room), lack of ability to easily multi track, and lack of sound isolation, crashes just weren't used much with recording. They bled in to all of the other mics. Same is true for Motown, early rock and roll, etc.

I was unaware. How do you count the beat for cut time? I would count 2/2 as 2 beats per measure and half note=1 beat. Guess I should have checked your website. ;-0 You have excellent lessons.

When Max Roach and Kenny Clarke shook up early jazz drumming by keeping time on the ride cymbal (rather than the traditional 4-on-the-floor kick pattern), they said that this allowed them to "drop bombs" on the kick drum, using it as another voice for comping. That's probably where these One Drop, Four Drop terms originate. See "Bebop" on Wikipedia for more.
@dennisloobman8013
@dennisloobman8013 5 лет назад
Is this a game of 'spot the deliberate mistake' or something? To my mind the ‘secret’ to playing well with other musicians is communication, and in rhythmic terms that depends on the simply agreeing on where ONE is, and, while that’s generally arrived at by ‘feel’, the drummer usually ‘counts everyone in’ for the downbeat. Then we all start in the same place. So here you are chatting away about “the beat on three” and that “you don’t play one” and I find myself asking where are you, or more to the point where is ONE? You are certainly a good drummer and speaking as a bass player I know it would be easy to play some great music with you (reggae or otherwise), but for the mere mortals out here would you PLEASE at the very least count "TWO THREE FOUR" before you play the riff (we can perhaps live without you actually saying "ONE"). Simply going in without a count leaves the listener with no ‘fixed point’ and having to ‘feel’ for it and, while this may even be one of the beauties of good reggae, for a student looking at the technique it’s like finding the end of a circle. Without a ‘reference point’ it’s almost impossible. I love your playing and you have great ‘feel’, but as a teacher? Nah! The technical aspect of what you’re saying is lost on me if you don’t ‘count me in’. So until you can tell me EXACTLY where you are on your way around that circle it’s gonna have to be "you do the beats and I’ll just play the bass over here bro". All the same, that's some great playing.
@elvergalarga4461
@elvergalarga4461 3 года назад
And 1 and 2 and 3 and 4. The kick and snare fall on 2 and 4. There you go fixed it.
@dennisloobman
@dennisloobman 3 года назад
@@elvergalarga4461 nah sorry mate, if you think you’ve ‘fixed it’ you've missed the point. It's all very well leaving the rest of the band to figure out the rhythms for themselves. Most good players will do that anyway because music is based on FEEL, and you won’t get much work in a reggae band if you ain't got ‘feel’. But we're not talking about a BAND here, this particular vid is supposed to be talking TUITION (aka teaching) and in teaching you’ll find that most students (beginners especially) will need a reference point to know where to start, aka a “COUNT IN”. Very few musicians are born with 'feel', feel is something learned from practice and experience and no decent teacher would (or should) expect their students to ‘magically know’ these things. A teacher’s job is to TEACH. Besides which you can see this for yourself if you look carefully enough at your own answer to the problem. Didn’t you notice how you started by saying "And 1 and 2 and 3 and 4"? Nice timing and well done for that, but you should consider what you've actually done there, because you've just "fixed it" by COUNTING IT IN (just like I said in the first place). Well HELLO!!
@eugenebatiste
@eugenebatiste 7 лет назад
That looks completely DIFFICULT. My inner drummer is going to kill me. the count has always been ONE, two, THREE, four. This is looking harder than the purdie-shuffle "ghost notes". Cancel XMAS, learn reggae patterns on the kit. It took me two years to learn how spell reggae correctly. ( two g's and swap the "a" and "e" )
@samtotheg
@samtotheg 12 лет назад
good stuff as always stephen T. nevermind the you have to do it exact dorks ,steve gadd plays hi hats on all 4 beats in jazz guess hes playing it wrong, anyhow I typed songo on your video page and noticed the songo lesson you did isnt there, or maybe its named something else, I could have sworn you did a lesson on songo, it certainly was alot better than the lesson by mike guy (no disrespect).
