My ears perked up when eh mentioned Copeland :D I came here to learn reggae coz I've been listening to Stewart Copeland alot and it's so apparent in his drumming with The Police.

I don't know if being dyslexic is a blessing in disguise whrn it comes to Reggae? In the 90's, it wasn't "cool" to listen to the Police, but I heard "Walking on the moon". I was flawed! The 1/4 note trips on the click, with 2 & 4 on the bass, along with a shuffle. Dam, I first thought it was an effect. I brought it to my drum teacher at the time, and he was super excited I picked it out from radio play. Soon after, I got police greatest hits, and it just came easy to me. About the time they had the reunion tour, I saw an ad for a drummer. BAM, got the gig, and had a blast. IDK if Copland would fit in, in Jamaica. He's one of my favorites, and with all his skill, ability etc, he is pretty high strung. I'm sure he'd be great, but wonder how his style would go with that "mellow feel" I'd love to see it, I'd also love to go to Jamaica too, head up to the trees, and jam with some legit islanders. Also, I wanna thak you! I've learned a ton from your vids. Thanks for putting em up!

"one drop" refers to "dropping the one" entirely, not to "emphasis on the three." Adding a pulse on the one refers to "stepper." style.

While Bob Marley may have been far and away the most popular reggae artist, he certainly wasn't the only one. So many of these videos make zero mention of Sly Dunbar, and Sly and Robbie played on virtually everyone else's records. They're still recording today.

You Know Karl, this gentleman is a very good teacher. The problem is that no proper Reggae drum books by recording Reggae drummers have been written. We get upset when 'others' try to teach it. Maybe we are to be blamed. Most of us do not read or write the music. Most of us who do read and write, do not understand enough to explain. Those who understand and know do not write. The rest kind of don't care. It doesn't bother me because I teach and many of my students end up on tours. During my early recording career I was told that it couldn't be written. I was told that if you learn to read it will cause you to lose your "feel'. I found out none of that was not true. I tell all my students that it took me 20 years to learn Reggae. This was not because I couldn't play 16th notes on HH and 2&4 Rim and BD, anybody can do that. That's the reason that it is thought of as being easy to play. There are small things that are difficult to understand unless you really want to understand it. I heard those small things and nobody was there to explain them to me. It took me 20 years. For my present students it doesn't have to take that long because God gave me the ability to explain well. By the way you need to call me.

When practicing reggae with a metronome I'd say it's best to begin on the upbeat and use quarter instead of eighth notes. That way you actually get the 'skank guitar' feel from the metronome while learning to locate the the exact middle point between the beats. You get your timing down AND you develop a pocket. Two birds with one stone.

you dont need to respond but 2 things, 1 stuart copeland (not sure how to spell his name) was talking bout 1 drop and said he got it from lebanese music actually. but that the 1 drop is common to both. and 2 listen to "beds to big without you" by the police , theres tons of space on that song and stuart plays this great reggae type beat with a tagat the end of it. its so cool check er out and cheers 9not sure how to spell his name)
@karlwright2593

why do every one who is not from JAMAICA thinks that the reggae on the drums is played on the third beat of the bar, it is on the two and four for the one drop. If you count it in eight notes you will get it on the third beat but reggae is counted in quarter note so the kick and snare is falling On two and four.

@@devonrichardson9467 I'm surprised as a teacher you would say he is a good teacher. He actually said to make your playing more islandy? Huh? Bad advice is bad advice and the exception doesn't allow us to throw out the rules . Whoever told you this music can't be transcribed is incorrect . This drummer is too robotic and not enough deep groove or feel. I don't know any drummer playing this music that sounds like this.
