How to play road by nick drake

Not easy to play or teach through a camera but I tried my best. Note that he doesn't play it this way every time during the song. There are a few different picking variations that I couldn't fit into a 10 minute video. But each of the main parts are there.

This lesson is an absolute godsend! I never thought I'd be able to play my favorite Nick Drake song cuz it sounded way too complex, but now I can and it's super fun to play too once you get that crazy pattern down. Thanks man, I owe ya one!

@ThePonchogringo If you know how to play the song why are you trolling this vid? I checked your channel for the correct way to play and tune but wasn't there?! Go away, my videos are not for people who already know it all and have nothing to contribute. I may be wrong, I may not, I'm not discussing it with a troll. I may suck at tutorials but you, sir, suck at life.

Thanks Gareth. I've been wanting to learn this song for a few years now, but thought it would be too tricky. After a couple of days of working with your tutorial, I've almost got it smoothed out. It is a tricky picking pattern, but your thorough way of explaining helped guide me along.

@Skooma714 yeah i ran through the tuning change at 1 min into the video. You tune the 3rd string (G string) down to an E note, by fretting the 4th string (D string) on the 2nd fret and tuning the 3rd down to that note.

This is really accurate on right hand, thanks. More fluidity and less stress on fingers however if you tune the 4th string also up to E. So, EAEEBE- nice one finger workout and focus on vocals this way. I bet this is how he played it.

Well done Gareth. I have always played it like this, and was curious about pedantic ponchogringo's alternate tuning (which seems to be borrowed from John Martin DGDDAD = EAEEBE ), so I tried it, and although it works fine, there is ONE note that is not playable - in the instrumental, after "see me through", the 3rd note - the open d-string - would not be playable if that string was tuned up to E. QED! I'm hoping to go to TIA this year, but my playing and singing are a bit ropey.

Hey there. I've been practicing this song from what you've shown here but I'm confused. The 2nd section. I've written the tab out as you go through it note by note but when you play the part in it's entirety it's played differently to how you explain it. I think part of it is repeated but I can't work out where. So I've been learning it wrong. I think you do mention something about a section repeating but you don't mention which bit, or it's not that clear to me.

Nice tutorial..thanks..Yeh, its the correct tuning, there is a school of thought that say its DGDDAD (capo 4th fret), but its not actually possible to play the second section accurately with that tuning. DACDAD (capo 4th) would be the same.

Hey, Gareth's picking may not be exact (neither's mine always, though I play a lot of Drake!), but I checked out your alternate tuning - which works fine. The "John Martin" - type DGDDAD = EAEEBE, one string different from Gareth's. BUT: one note in N.D.'s recording which cannot be played properly with the 4th string tuned same as the 3rd. In the instrumental, after "see me through", the 3rd note is open 4th in Gareth and Nick - in yours it would have to be fretted at 5 on 5th. No big deal :)

I know this is old, but if you're in standard tuning, tune your 3rd string down to E. Nick played many of his songs in lower tunings (CGCFGE - Place To Be, CGCFCE - Pink Moon, Parasite, BEBEBE - From the Morning), so you could also tune this one down a whole step - DGCDAD - with the capo on the 4th fret if you're playing a lot of his tunes...makes it easier to tune to each song. Nick didn't have digital tuners in his day, nor did he have to tune to any other instrument on this album, save the piano on Pink Moon (it might have been tuned a half step down, which would explain most of his guitar tunings - they are in between notes). So if you try to play with him, tune down a half step more. Hope that helps:)

Great rendition but it's far less complicated than that. It's DGDDAD capoed at the 5th fret. This is the correct tuning and capo position after doing much research and reading the biography which has info about every song and its tuning in the end section of the book.
