Reason Kurt didn’t like it is because it was the only song people cared about. Nirvana had many great songs but smells like teen spirit was famous due to MTV. If you look at other bands, they have the same issues with their songs. They don’t necessarily hate the songs, they hate the situation the songs put themselves in. Kurt loved smells like teen spirit and designed it to be reminiscent of youthful rebellion. He also bragged to his mother that it was playing on the radio
@@confusedcat-sm9cylmao. As a furry, that actually made me laugh 😂 I was like, “wait- what do u mean furry?” And then I looked at the user’s pfp 🤣
Tbh both are fine bc both sound good. Adding the extra mutes makes it sound more rhythmic while adding the open string makes it sound more nirvana. It honestly just depends what sound you’re going for.
I wouldn't call this song overrated...it's overplayed...not overrated it's actually a very good song but yeah it's played much more than their other songs are
Even though it's Nirvana's best-known song, It's probably the most played differently, I'd say even About a Girl or In Bloom is easier, It's an amazing song for eternity.
The ones who call it overrated because they think it’s cool to pretend like it wasn’t the perfect song that came at the perfect moment by the perfect band for that time. & Kurt never really stated he *hated* that song. He said he hated that it was making people overlook his other work. One of his own favorites was Drain You and he wanted people to see the work they put into that and other tunes. MTV and radio overplayed it and he was rightfully annoyed that they were basically getting treated as a one hit wonder at the beginning.
Mistake, first measure. There is only one click before the third beat, not four clicks. This is the strumming rhythm of the first measure: 1..a - 2..a - 3e&. - 4e&. All chords and clicks considered. Listen to the track 💜
1. You use the 5&6 frets of the G & B strings for the verse (doesn’t really make a difference but if you want to be 100% accurate 2. You’re missing an upstroke at the end of the last Power Chord
In the song it was all in standard tuning so move the 1st 2 chords to the second and move the 3rd and 4th back 1 also the end its just open B and E you don't put your fingers on the 1st one
Putting aside whether or not it's a great song or not, one of the most significant aspects of this song is WHEN it came along on the timeline of culture, which, unless you have a time machine, is an aspect someone as young as you will never have the ability to fully appreciate. And, like all kids, despite your total lack of enough information on a subject, you have a fully formed opinion on its validity.
@@mustydustard Lounge Act is my favorite song! My top 10 would be 1. Lounge Act 2. Dumb 3. Rape Me 4. Sappy 5. Verse Chorus Verse 6. Drain You 7. Heart Shaped Box 8. (New Wave) Polly 9. Smells Like Teen Spirit 10. School
Actually it's up down up and When you play the power chords on the A string you need to play it 3 times not 2 and When you switch from the first frets on the E string to the 4th fret on the E string you need to hit all the open strings
I’d say it’s overplayed, kinda like with Come As You Are, or an example from a different band, Master of Puppets. But they’re still really good songs, which is why they end up being overplayed.
For those who argue that the song is not overrated, you probably haven't heard their other songs. Even Kurt himself somehow admitted that this song was overrated. Most of their songs which he thought to be better or, if not, then just as good as Smells like Teen Spirit didn't get the recognition they should have. This was one of the reasons why Kurt hated the band's biggest hit, for it overshadowed other songs that his band actually dedicated to (rather than just a rip-off or something like that).
I actually do know a lot of their discography. It's a good song, and an incredibly important song for both pop music, punk music, pop punk music, and culture as a whole.
Yes same@@teinkie5091Its on my top 5 along with scentless Apprentice, Heart-Shaped-Box, Come as you are and Radio friendly unit shifter, but I don't really have a top 5 because I have a lot of favorites and I can't fit them all. But I do like Dive, but I just can't fit it as I said.
It's not overrated. Kurt literally wrote it to be one of the greatest pop songs of all time. I hate that it's one of the only songs that people know from them, yet all the praise it gets is rightfully deserved. That's like saying Bohemian Rhapsody and Welcome to the Black Parade are overrated cause so many people like them. For sure learn and listen too all their discography, it's amazing, but calling one of the best and most iconic pop songs overrated just cause it's popular is ridiculous. Why is something being great seen as a bad thing?
Its actually a straight B flat immediately after the F5 not a B Flat 5...on some strums his way of barring the B flat (with one finger flattened) means he mutes the B string accidently but only occasionally.Same goes for the C# after the G#5.Oh and it's not over rated but for a time it was overplayed compared to some of the other masterpieces on Nevermind.
Actually what Kurt Cobain is playing is technically an "11" chord. Its like a hybrid power chord with a bar chord. The most common misconception with the song.
