I don't typically comment on RU-vid videos, but man this is so well-done. Your clarity on the section of the song you're referring to, and playing with such similarity to how the Dead plays it... just a cray amount of respect bro (your jokes are also hilarious lo)

this is one of the great eight songs we never got to hear studio versions of as a follow up to fall 1970 american beauty.... all we got were live versions: bertha / wharf rat / brown eyed woman / he's gone / jack straw / mr charlie / ramble on rose / tennessee jed... oh how these could have sounded given fuller studio arrangements as well as added instrumentation like pedal steel horns and strings... thankfully wake of the flood captured those textures...

Golly, there's some incredible live versions. Dead studio versions rarely measure up.
@jakollee
@jakollee 3 года назад
@@elmoblatch9787 yes, the Dead did great live versions of many songs, and some studio versions don’t measure up to the live ones. But think if you’d only ever heard live versions of the tunes on American Beauty, or Terrapin? There are lots of cool things you can do with a song in the studio. And to be honest, the live version of Wharf Rat on Skull & Roses was heavily tweaked in the studio. I for one would love to have studio versions of the songs mark brownner listed, as well as all the great live versions.

In the verse line, the bit you say is C C7 Dm7 C is actually C7 Cdim Bb9 C. The bass note is C throughout, the top note descends G, F#, F, E. Similar to the E turnaround in "Loose Lucy", also used in "The Music Never Stopped" (A I think). Used by Dylan a lot, most notably "Rainy Day Women", in the key of F, it's most of the song.

As a self learned Bass Player of 7 years who has no Fen idea what hes doing.. when i start climbing through Tennessees Octaves i get a rush on a different level thats far different than any other Jerry tune.. Definitely helped me to understand the Fretboard and Octaves. When i play to Dead tunes im listening for 90% Jerry, 8% Phil and 2% Rhythms.. probably unusual for a Bassist but it seems to work for me..

Simple, clean, fun instruction (aka upitty today). Spent 40-minutes 2-days ago and everything was still there today... I suck and that never happens. So I am going with I didn’t magically become a guitar savant overnight so it must be the instruction and the clear breakdown. I can’t wait to dig into the other songs you have done. REQUEST(s): 1) Unpack WTF Bobby is doing for some of these songs 2) a little deeper dive on the Jam. Think real novice player: scale, shape, position, changes, ideas of when and how to change positions, and maybe a few riffs and where to throw them in. Nothing fancy, just some basic bones. Finally, thank you and to echo the sentiment of @Gavin B, how TF do we pay you?

Love your energy guys...you make learning fun. I could qualm about the chords in the middle of the verse (the walk down over "you know your bound to wind up dead")...I know what you listed is what is generally in the books but I'm pretty sure they used a bunch of sub chords throughout the years on that part and as mentioned earlier sometimes they go to F on the jam for a couple bars and walk up to G but all in all this is the best lesson on this song on RU-vid....you finally explained the lick coming out of the chorus in a way my brain can absorb it! Good stuff boys
@loganmcdanks
@loganmcdanks 3 года назад
The best way I think to play the middle of the verse is to just keep the C in the bass over the dminor...so the walk down would be......C,C7,Dm7/C,C,C7. But that's a hard concept for many beginners to grasp so I get it and if your playing with a bass player it's not gonna matter am I right?

Agree to disagree, bro. The chords on rukind are C | Dm7 | C | C7, I add a C7 after that first C because it sounds right to me. Play it however you want though homie, but I stand by what I taught. And please don’t take this as disrespect, sometimes I do fuck up and I am totally okay with admitting when I’m wrong, but in this case, I gotta stand by it. @jakollee
@jakollee 3 года назад
@@TobyDavvy I don't mean to be an a-hole, but chord and tab sheets on ultimate-guitar (and some other youtube lessons) show the second chord as a C diminished. Even though you've played the song your way many times, you could still be open-minded to the possibility that you have that section a little off. Try playing along to the recording using a C diminished as the 2nd chord. You might be surprised by how "right" it sounds. Anyway, thanks for your kind response, peace and keep on truckin'!
@TobyDavvy
@TobyDavvy 3 года назад
I am open to it, and if that’s what it is, then, awesome, but I’m going to play it the way I play it. If it’s a bit off, I can live with that. I’m not a perfectionist, and it’s still the song regardless of one very slightly different chord. On this channel, we’re working from rukind, because overall, they have the most accurate tabs and chords all in one place. Also, not like I can really go back and change it at this point. It is what it is. Haha. But for real, I like being called out. Keeps me on my toes. So, thanks again for the discussion.
@jakollee
@jakollee 3 года назад
@@TobyDavvy Actually, I checked and Rukind does show the C diminished as the 2nd chord, designated with an asterisk, "*" (right over the lyrics word "bound"), with a little chord diagram off to the side. Sorry for beating a dead horse, I'll shut up now.
