How to play the Jew's harp - beginner step by step tutorial

Step by step beginner techniques to start playing the Jew's harp or jaw harp, mouth harp (you name it). Very easy, hyper basic tutorial for beginners.

DO
1. Hold the instrument firmly with your left hand so that you don't touch the spring and the twainger is pointing outwards.
2. Push the narrow part of the frame against your open teeth in a way that the spring can freely move between your teeth too.
3. Pluck the end of the spring (twanger) straight forward. You can also pluck it backwards.
4. Breath rhytmically.
5. Move your tounge back and forth, shape your mouth.
DON'T
1. DON'T grasp the instrument.
2. DON'T press the frame together either with your hand, teeth or lips.
3. DON'T bite it.
4. DON'T close your teeth.
5. DON'T pluck downwards, only straight forward or backward.

As a musician I expected playing to be easy but after watching way too many insufficient tutorials this one has finally brought comfort to my frustration. I still don't have the technique down but thanks to your close up and in depth explanations about teeth and lip placement in starting to believe that maybe it's not a completely defective jaw harp that I bought...

It took me a week to learn to use a metal jaw harp with the proper bone conduction technique that also gives insane sustain. Meanwhile I was designing 3d printed ones that worked beautifully without being pressed against the teeth. And once I learned, I could even get my reject 3d print designs working much better

Great video! Well explained, down to the point, and very helpful easy techniques. I'm an experienced harmonica player but just ordered my first Jew's/jaw harp and so excited to learn. Love how both instruments fit inside a pocket and easy to carry during my outdoor adventures when at the end of the day I'm sitting around the campfire at night making music. Looking forward to watching more videos. You now have a new fan.

thanks. i have 7 bottom teeth and no top teeth but i was still able to play. haven't tried it with my dentures in yet. but i look forward to trying

Thank you for the excellent video! I dont know if it was harder to do in English but I appreciated it very much. Sadly I only speak English and many jews harp videos are in other languages. I have been playing the jews harp for about 6 months now but it has been hard to find advanced instructions in English. Of course watching what is done on in thr video is the most important but being able to understand the words helps me comprehend better. So sorry this is a long post but I am very excited to watch more of your videos and wanted to tell you my experience.

The reason why I dont do more tutorials in english is that I believe there is way too many out there, why to make one more. But your (and many similar messages) convince me to do more educative videos on the jaw harp in English too. So, thanks for the encouragement. (For me it doesn't make a big difference if I have to do it in English or in Hungarian.)

Many years ago there was a music store in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, called Ward's Music. Mr Ward was the principal oboe player in the Vancouver Symphony. Mr Ward was Jewish. On the front counter of the store was a box of Jew's Harps. "Jew's" had been crossed out with a heavy felt marker and overwritten with the word "Arab", so the sign read "Arab Harps". I still have a chip out of one of my front teeth today from one of them. My father had one back in the 1950's, and during a cheesy 1950's horror movie there was a time-lapse scene where a woman's hand changed and grew claws. My dad (he was a punk teenager at the time) pulled out his Jew's Harp and went "TWANG-ANG-ANG-ANG . . . " This was before I was born, but I heard this story many times from his friends. It had been one of the funniest moments in their lives.
