Derryl is an amazing teacher! I've been taking private lessons with him for a couple of years now and look forward to every lesson we do on Skype. I couldn't recommend him highly enough!

Nicely done! The chord patterns in this song are also a good introduction to Allan's style. I have small hands, so they're a stretch for me, but doable.

I'm hearing some Vaughan Williams dominant 7th sounds in the run starting at about 7' 38". It conjures up visions of the Norfolk broad marshes and bending grass in the wind. There I go getting all nostalgic for England.

Nicely played and explained. Interesting to see this "relatively easy" solo of Holdsworth's up close. Especially those nasty sequential ascending licks he rips on. His is a sorely missed voice. RIP.

Hi, UK here - I saw AH about 20 years ago at Ronnie Scotts in Birmingham UK, just totally mind blowing. I wasn't a fan of the music itself, but a total admirer of his other wordly technical prowess. I don't know how you can even learn his solos note for note let alone play them "at speed" - phenomenal. Have you ever heard of Alan Murphy? He, like Alan Holdsworth also played with the funk pop band Level 42, also Go West and Kate Bush. His tone and style is reminiscent of AH and I wondered if you'd heard him or heard of him/ AM is sadly no longer with us either, but whilst on this planet stunned me with his musicality and technique. This solo (in my mind at least) is very Alan Murphy is tone and style. Respect to you.

That's great. I have never found a good resource for Holdsworth transcriptions. Most of the popular sources like Guitar for the Practicing Musician, etc. have the wrong technique and are almost completely useless.

Well I spent a few days learning this and really taking my time to get the phrasing right. Got up to @0:18 and that 7-10-13 stretch really strains the hand so had to stop there. Really great lesson though!

You could tap the 13th fret if you need to. That's the great thing about the guitar.. There is almost always a way to arrange in a way that you can play a passage.

Alot of ear trickery in AH's phrasing. Some of these lines are more bluesy than when it's just blazing by.

Really excellent job. Would you tell me what primarily gives you that "AH sound"? AH used a variety of guitars and amps and still maintained a very recognizable tone over the decades. What are you using, a pedal, rolled the tone down on the guitar, etc? Its perfect.
@derrylgabel
@derrylgabel 6 лет назад
I'm using the Fractal Audio Axe FX XL plus. Some of the key attributes to Allan's tone besides his fingers is the EQ boost at around 500hz and 2K and roll off the low end at 120hz. Also, the use of 8 delays, 4 short and 4 long and all ping ponged. I'm also using a detune which thickens the sound.

Ah, so just a simple Tube Screamer. J/K. Never used the Fractal, but looking at a photo of it, it looks very complex. TY

wish note names were used instead of, or in conjunction with, fret numbers. Musicians really ought to be thinking of what note they are playing, not just a fret number, which is totally in the abstract.
@derrylgabel
@derrylgabel 5 лет назад
If you would like to email me I'll send you the transcription which is in standard notation and tab. Saying the fret number and the note is more than my brain can handle. I actually know the notes better than the fret number but most players I encounter don't know the notes so I figured saying the fret number would be best. If you watch the whole thing you'll see me struggling with saying the fret number and complaining about it haha.

I saw a vid somewhere on that. Most likely here on YT. Two harmonizers used. One tuned a whole step below the root and the other, a perfect 4th above. If I can find it, I'll post the link.
