Today I got a soprano from the store,my wife is going to be mad knowing that. Two hours later I learned how to tune my beautiful hukelele, plus the first four chords, sound so great. When I master it , I 'll sing a love song to her,and I 'll safe. Soon we are 50 years married, so I have some week to practice. Thank you,Master.
(This is concert/ soprano) *HOW TO TUNE: -Recommend a clip on tuner so you can tune it rly quick -There are built in tuners on some ukuleles -sopranos have same tuning but sometimes they tune the smaller ones up a tone from this -the tuning is: 4th string = G (high sound) [the string closest to the ceiling] 3rd string = C (lower sound) 2nd string = E (medium sound) 1st string = A (highest sound) [the string closest to the floor] -goes from ceiling to floor *HOW TO HOLD IT: -hold the uke w your forearm and press the uke against your body and hold the neck with your other hand for a little support ^^Balance the weight of it between the forearm (arm w the hand strumming) and the hand on the neck -OR you could rest the body of the uke on your lap and hold the neck w your other hand *HOW TO STRUM IT: -Usually strum with your 1st finger (there are techniques tho,, like finger styles and stuff but 1st finger is best for beginners) -usually you strum around where the neck meets the body -practice: do 4 down strokes w 1st finger then 4 up strokes to get used to it (make sure finger isn't getting caught on the strings) -practice 2: 1 down stoke, then 1 up stoke repeatedly -practice 3: (this is a common pattern) down, down, up, down, up, down -smth you should study is different kinds of strumming patterns and different ways of playing it -don't stress *4 SIMPLE CHORDS: *PROGRESSIONS TO PUT ON THOSE CHORDS:
it's easy to do if you push the C, E and A strings on the 2 fret with your index finger and push the E on 3 with your middle finger. only two fingers get involved
This video helped SO much. I had a ukulele just laying around, and today, I finally decided to learn how to play. I went from knowing nothing about it, to learning 8 chords.
Thank you! I’m thinking about buying a ukulele soon, but I want to know a bit about them before I buy one. Your video has already helped a ton! Thank you!
How's it going? You'll be a uke maestro by now hopefully. Cheers 😊 | close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide [ www.justinguitar.com/ ] & Moderator on JustinGuitar Forum
I was just promoted to music teacher at my school and inherited 28 ukuleles. Today is the first day I've ever attempted to play and this video was perfect to help get me started. Thank you!
I can't decide if my ukulele sounds bad or I am making it sound bad. Probably both. Also my fingers are dying. Idk what I thought was going to happen, but it's been one hour and I'm still not Tyler Joseph.
Ash Robichaud wow! You're committed!!! Tbh I haven't played an instrument seriously for like four years And it was the Clarinet XD Good luck on the Ukulele!!!! I bet you'd be amazing on it!
Me too, my brother used to have a ukulele and doesn’t use it anymore, thought I would take it up because it sounds beautiful and, I write my own songs... ☺️ I totally agree with you that it sounds nice/beautiful/amazing
Aliya The Person same. I was at camp and this dude nee how to play and my friend so it seemed like a good idea to learn how to play they also said it eas simple so
I'm probably late to this, but I bought a "Vorson ABS Concert Ukulele" and it's pretty sturdy, sounds great, and holds it's tuning well. It's only $25-29 on Amazon depending on what graphics you choose. The reason they're so inexpensive is because they're made of plastic, which is actually more durable than the wooden ones. It just doesn't look like wood. I'd definitely recommend upgrading if the one you own doesn't sound great and you don't want to spend a lot of money on a higher end one 🙂
animeaddict My husband daniel taught me and easier way to play the G Cord. Put your first finger over the first threecords on the second fret and then put your Second finger over the second string on the third fret. It is so much easier to play it that way, hope it helps😄
Bob Lawblawblaw My husband Daniel also taught me an easier way of playing the G Chord, put the first finger over the first three strings on the second fret and then put your second finger over the second string on the third fret it’s so much easier to play it that way
After years of asking for a ukulele my mother just decided to buy me one to give me something to do during all this Covid-19 mayhem. 15 minutes later I had a ukulele and I'm so excited to learn! This video was a great start!
i think i have had my ukulele for about four years or five and just now i feel like learning how to strum an ukulele CORRECTLY 😃 thank you for the clear explanation!
Bought a uke from a work colleague but walked past it guiltily every day for months. So I kicked myself up the proverbial backside this morning after mindlessly watching tosh on the tv and followed your lesson. Why didn't I do this before?! 4 chords reasonably mastered. Many thanks Justin.
So here’s my story Earlier today my friend found a ukulele in her closet while she was cleaning it out She didn’t know what to do with it I gave her five bucks for it We were both happy Until I realized I have no clue how to play an instrument I figured out how to play twinkle twinkle little star somehow...... Now I suck even more than when I started. Bye bye
You're a good teacher! Covered a lot in just a few minutes: Tuning. Positioning. Basic chords. Strum patterns. I'm lovin' this guy and this little instrument. Thanks Justin!
Thank you for sharing. I'll be 50 this coming June and I think learning new things doesn't require age. I hope I can play simple songs for my KG3 pupils.
*Facts* Why ppl wanna play uke To learn: Tyler Joseph 70% Dodie 10% Cavetown 10% Rebecca Sugar 5% Other 5% - - Idk just Uke songs 100% :> *- Why ppl are here -* “I *don’t* know” 10% “I wanna learn to play uke” 3% “I wanna learn even if I don’t own a uke” 7% “I have an exam in 2 hours and don’t even have a uke” 80%
Easton me: *learning to play uke bc I’m cosplaying as a guitar-wielding camp too-innocent-for-his-age camp counsellor named David but I don’t have a guitar so I got a uke from five below bc it was cheep and now I wanna learn how to play it so I can be at least somewhat accurate to the character* also like if u know who David is and what show he’s from lol
Thanks man - Picked the Ukulele up for the first time in my life two days ago, got the basic cords together after first 30 minutes and over last couple of days , this video has really helped pull it all together, you're really watchable, straight talking and to the point - Nice One! : )
Had a ukelele for over 3 years never played it as I didnt know how till I RU-vidd how to play the ukelele and your video came up and I watched it and immediately learnt to play the chords you used here... with the chords I can play quite a lot of songs that I like... Thank you so much for a very clear instruction. Now I can learn other chords and learn to strum...
Eddie Vedder inspired me to want to play ukulele. Im 54 and play a bit of guitar most my life but eddies style and great song writing just makes me want to express myself threw this fun and exciting instrument. Thank you Justin for such clear and easy direction.
GREAT VIDEO! THANK YOU! Picked up my old Flying V ukulele that I got in exchange for a bag of doughnuts at Download about 10 years ago and has been sitting in my little girls bedroom for decoration. Given me a strum rhythm to practice to make it less boring, taught 4 chords and an easy sequence to put them into to make a song I recognise. And teaches you how to tune. 3 hours later and I already feel like I can play a song I sort of recognise. I can’t wait to show my little girl in the morning. She probably won’t be at all impressed by my new talent. Really handy video though.
This is really helpful! I'll be returning to this video when I get my first ever ukulele in a week - I'm sure it'll be ideal for my nonexistent skill level. Thank you so much, Justin!
cool, I went to Hawaii once and got a ukulele at Walmart and never played it and then my father sat on it XD. so I got a new one from an actual music store that I never touched until now
I bought a ukulele years ago and started to learn but for some reason I stopped. Now during this lockdown I have decided to learn again and I'm enjoying it already :)
I did the same exact thing, lol. I used to play the clarinet back in middle school (don't care much for non-rock instruments now) but there's something intimidating about the harmonica. I want to learn how to play it so bad though.
WolverinesNation92 hi awesome video. i just love it. google panlarko amazing uke planner for more information to know more about beginners guide to playing the ukulele. thank you.
WolverinesNation92 Wow how to play ukulele for beginners is really very helpful. To play panlarko amazing uke planner is also very nice, you can get this on google.
Thank you! Playing the Uke for the first time today and have never played any musical instruments. I was able to catch right on with this video! Very helpful!!!
Hi Justin Just bought a cute little Uke today at a Cashies store. Mint condition and very cute. Found your great video and have it all tuned up nicely. Sounds great and now learnt my first 4 chords😊👏👏👏👍💕Yah. Heaps of fun. I play guitar also so was puzzled at first by the tuning of the uke, but followed your instructions and all worked out well. You are awesome. Thank you 🙏
Thanks so much for this great video. I am a music teacher in schools and have been asked to give a ukulele class tomorrow! In all my years of playing guitar (over 30), I am ashamed to say I've never even picked one up, so your video has been mega helpful as a starting point. Many thanks!
I am just learning . Thank you for being so clear on your instruction. I still suck ! But you are the first person that has made me feel like I have a chance!!!🤩😀👍🏼Cheers
Another thing I should have said, it really helps being able to play guitar as well. I found the transition really easy as a result. The key is to have patience and perseverance. It will come.
"good for parties" I don't know what parties he goes to, but if I am at a party I never say "Hey you know what, I should break out the ol' uke...." Jk don't kill me
I play over 20 instruments and you can play literally anything at a party. This is gonna be my newest conquest and bet your ass I'm gonna play it at some parties. It'll be nice to have something so small and lightweight. Fits anywhere.
Thanks Justin, I finally bought a ukulele today and your video was so tremendously helpful. Really appreciate the time and effort you put in to making this tutorial and I can't wait to watch the next lesson. Cheers!
This was wonderful! I've never played the ukelele or guitar or anything. I just tuned our ukelele and gently played the four chords in this video over and over again. Our little kids loved it and my wife said it sounded like her native Hawaii.
Yes and no. You wouldn't be able to tune the instrument Justin is using to the same notes as a guitar, but there are other options. Of the two larger size ukuleles he alluded to, one of them (called a baritone ukulele) is tuned like the highest four strings on a guitar (DGBE, low to high). Baritone's have a really rich sound that I like, but if you wanted that same tuning with a slightly more "classic ukulele" sound you could have the D string an octave up (dGBE). You'll need a special string set for that, but the folks at your local music store can help you put that together. I hope this helps you!
actually it is tuned the same as a guitar... with a capo at the 5th fret it's the thinnest 4 strings!! all the usual shapes and scales work, just have to pretend the thickest two strings are gone!!
***** ooh, so do you mean that we can play the same things in each of the two in that way? like a guitar with 5th fret capo and a std tuned uke playing? Are there alternatives like the guitar open and the uke playing at the same time?
Thank' so much this is great I'm over 70 and I can play a few songs. Its a nice to be able to play in just a few lessons and a little practice. Thanks so much.
Hey Justin, Thanks for these tutorials. I just started to travel longer on the road. I wanna use my ukulele that I got yesterday to basking. I am stoked by the way you explain staffs. Cheers!
I bought my first ukulele yesterday, and found this video which made for a GREAT start!!! I just might be able to do this, lol. A tuner is a good idea, and inexpensive. Working on my first 4 chords and sequences - thanks, Justin!!!
I'm A Gøner just bar out the 3 bottom strings with ur 1st finger and 2nd fing on the 2nd string 3rd fret. Complicated stuff but its so much easier than playing with 3 fingers

Hailey-loves-phan you have to really press down on the string on the fret board thingy. It hurts at first but that's how you get the desired sound of the chord :)
Have ordered a Ukulele which is coming on Wednesday. I’ve never played an instrument before. Your video is fantastic and I look forward to trying it out.💞
