This lesson has been a long time coming. For years now I have received many comments and emails asking how to play traditional gospel bass lines, but I am finally starting to teach about it on my RU-vid Channel this year, starting with this video.
If you play in church or are a gospel bass enthusiast this lesson takes you from being a beginner at traditional gospel bass line to being able to play in church!
This will be the first lesson of many if you guys like it?
Let me know in the comments below!

Bro, I really appreciate you sharing this and educating us on more traditional gospel bass..see the thing is, I congregate at a Hispanic Apostolic church, and many times they throw in these types of songs that I wasn't too familiar with because I was only taught the very basic chromatic walk on the bass. And of course, now and day they play more newer generation music. This really helps me; thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻

1:48... Great work! I stand corrected, but I think you might have got it backwards there. It was Gospel music that influenced Jazz (Blues) not the other way around. I think scholars like Wynton Marsalis support this account too. Once again, great work, maestro!

Man I sure wish someone would do a video on the vocal bass/baritone line in traditional old gospel songs like Amazing Grace, I'll Fly Away, In The Garden. I have sang in a choir before but only way I can sing bass or baritone is to follow person beside me. And when I have sang in special music in quartet in small church I usually got a practice tape with just my part, so that helped. So take top 10, 15, or 20 most popular old timey gospel songs and play the bass/baritone line.

Travis, thank you, this is just the thing I need to know, but it's a struggle, the way the sequence is spread across the bars. I'd like very much to see the bass line measure by measure, especially at chord changes and the turn around, from you or anyone. Again, thanks. Tom

please explain to me how to understand the numbers? i can't understand letters like 1 3 5 in A string and 7 in E string ?im familiar in only in letter chords only. thank you appreciated
@haleespohn171
@haleespohn171 2 года назад
The numbers he's using are in reference to the Bb scale (Bb-C-D-Eb-F-G-A-Bb). So when he says a number, it's corresponding to what order that note is on the scale (example: 1-3-5 is Bb-D-F because those are the 1st-3rd-and 5th notes in the scale). When he mentions playing on a certain string, he wants you to play that note where it's found on that particular string. Hope this helps 👍
