I appreciate the fact that you're willing to slow things down to a crawl (for us players who aren't so quick to pick things up - after struggling with guitar for 40+ years I thought about hypnotism and just giving up but you've helped me get past those obstacles). You are one of my favorite instructors on the web and definitely my go to teacher (along with Marty Schwartz and Eric Blackmon) when I want to learn something. Keep up the most excellent work!

His lessons are brilliant for players at all skill levels. I've been playing guitar competently for 35 years but yet I still use these lessons sometimes. I like this one in particular because even though I've been playing the main riff for many a year, I knew I hadn’t quite nailed the verse properly. As he says, it’s quite particular but he’s got it spot on. Now I have as well thanks to this video. Thanks Justin if you’re reading 🤜🤛

For anyone who can't reach the 13th fret because they have small hands (like me) you can alternatively use the 8th fret of the fourth string, as it sounds exactly the same. Sorry if this was obvious.
@iamthebird101
@iamthebird101 9 лет назад
It should be noted that is good to practice that reach anyways, it will improve your access to the fretboard long term.
@charliebarber7682

Robin Schauls Yes precisely, just if you absolutely cannot make that stretch whatsoever you can use this as a shortcut while you wait for your hands to grow ( as mine have done since I posted that comment).

Great lesson, thanks! The trick to getting the verse to sound anything like on the record is definitely getting the alternate picking directions correct. Thanks for taking the time and the care to show how to do it.

Nice J-man! Got an 80s band gig coming up so this was very helpful. Like you say, Joe Perry plays the verse up at the 8fr but right now I'm favouring playing it 3fr/5th string, 5fr/4th string and using the open G and hammer-pulls on the 2nd, 3rd and 5th frets there as an alternative.

I don't know about better but it's a great idea and is a bit easier. The notes are the same. You can also play it starting on the 3rd fret of the A string and using the open "g" string. I think he has the notes right though, and I have played it in three different spots on the neck, all the different positions have a slightly different tone even though the notes are the same. It's a great Idea to try different positions for some people it could be a lot easier. Thanks for posting your idea Rem!

For the verse riff, just barre the A and D string, with your 3rd finger. It makes things easier.

In terms of lessons some of Marty's are very good and some of Justin's are very good. They are both great teachers. This one happens to be easier for me to learn from Justin though. Since I started playing again in December of 2010 I basically learned everything frome these guys after not touching my guitar for about 15 years. If youtube was around when I was in jr hs/hs maybe I would have stuck with the guitar.

Great explanation Justin ! It's a great riff and a great challenge for a beginner like myself. On the second part, I find the flickoff on the 13th fret easier to play than a pick on 10th in between 13th and 12th. Anyway, great video !!!

That said I am not up to date on the newer chinese amp brands and models. I just know I have had my amp for two years now, and have had zero problems with it. I would do the same thing again if I needed a new amp. Thanks fot the help Justin, I was a little off on the way i was playing the rythem, and like what you came up with. sounds pretty much dead on.Sometimes Aerosmith is hard to figure out because there it two great guitar players playing different voicings of the same chords and notes.

Well, the verse riff is indeed very specific, to your little finger. Especially when the middle finger hangs around uselessly. Think it is way better, for most people, to have the middle finger on the 10th fret, leaving more options for ring and small finger..

I don't know but I kind of like the tone of the Fender champ. I am guilty of owning a Jet City (Chinese amp), and loving it! I sold my Marshall Artist 4203 because I liked the Jet City tone way better, especialy with my Stratocaster. My freind has a little Egnator (think that's how it's spelled) head. Not sure what model it is but he can mix the two types of power tubes in it with a dial. It sounds awesome. I am really liking the inexpensive low wattage all tube chinese amps

I haven't got it perfect yet, but I've been playing it around the 2nd and 5th fret area and that sounds closer to me. I'll use you're positioning and transpose the notes to the position I'm playing in to see how it works out. Maybe you can try it too and see how it sounds, and let me know if you think it sounds wrong playing around the 2nd to 5th fret area. Of course there are 2 guitars on this song, maybe I'm keying in more to the position I'm in, which sounds like Perry instead of Whitford.

That verse! My hands don't stretch far enough and my pinky isn't strong enough. I sacrifice the last C note on the E string and just move my whole hand up a couple of notes for the second half of that verse riff. Close enough. I've been trying for years to get my pinky to do the work and today I've just moved on. :)
