How to Play Warhammer 40k on Tabletop Simulator in 10th Edition

I've had a few people asking about what program I'm using to make my Warhammer 40k videos, so I wanted to put together a short guide going over the basics on how to install, setup & play 40k on Tabletop Simulator in 2023. Whether you play casual or competitive, TTS is one of the more valuable resources we have access too - give it shot!
Let me know if you have any other questions or if I missed anything important

MAPS:
***It looks like Battleforge changed up their maps/suggest "BCB" instead of FTC. This guide will still apply to either ver. but if you'd like to use FTC I uploaded the Battleforge maps here: www.dropbox.com/s/aya4gg3eocx...
You'd unzip the file above to your Documents / My Games / Tabletop Simulator / Saves directory
Additional Tips / Reminders:
- Press F to flip models while hovering over them (ie: when they die!)
- If using Yellowscribe method: While hovering over your model press NUMPAD 2 to reduce the wound count & NUMPAD 3 to add wounds back
- To add a visible aura range for your model, press NUMPAD 4 to expand or NUMPAD 5 to reduce it's size
- To show an objective's range, right-click on it & change the State option as desired
- Remember to hold down TAB while moving a unit to see how far it's moving
- Cancel a move by pressing ESC (before releasing your mouse!)
- You can also measure from the ground to an enemy etc with TAB too
- In the Discord, use @Mentor if it's your very first match, otherwise you can use @LFG to find a Beginner, Casual or Competitive match
- To add a specific model to your active match, go to the Game option along the top menu, Save/Load, find the mod with your models & select Options then Search & drag the model into the match

just going through this again. You don't always have to hold tab. INstead, -highlight your whole army -Right click -toggles -Check on Measurement now, when ever you move a model, it will automatically measure the distance it's being moved.

great video, thanks. some random from the ctrl+v that made me laugh, lol, had to investigate that one: "While developing the user interface for the Lisa, Apple programmer Larry Tesler chose to use the Z, X, C, and V keys in conjunction with the Lisa's Apple key to represent Undo, Cut, Copy, and Paste. Together, they made Apple+Z, Apple+X, Apple+C, and Apple+V."

Heyho! Thanks for the tutorial :D I made it trough, managed to install (i think) everything there was to install, but i dont have a maps folder in battleforged. only terrain and tools. :(

Glad you found it useful man!! Sadly no Discord *yet* though it's almost definitely on near horizon. I only really started doing these like ~2wks ago & we're already almost to 1k subs so... Wasn't prepared for how quick we'd grow lmao. Hop on the main TTS Discord for now tho! Legit 95%+ of the time they're suuuper chill even when you're a bit rusty. Just be upfront is all I'll try to remember to shoot you a msg when the Discord gets rolling though

What are people's practical experiences finding 3D models for this online? I've messed around in TTS and looked through the mods a little bit and my impression is that it seems like what's ready-to-go is very good but far from complete. Can anyone with experience comment on what I can expect if I keep digging? e.g. How reliably can one put together and import 3D models for arbitrary 40K lists? If and when necessary, how difficult is it to learn to adapt or make passable 3D models for 40K to use in TTS?

another great vid homie. I bought TTS and am gonna set it up just because I watched this. Just gotta find some homies in the discord to play with, should be good to get games in when the irl homies can't come or just to test lists etc. QUESTION: are there any skins for the tables so I don't have to feel like i'm on a billiards table lol.

Oh man, that's awesome to hear someone say so tyvm Deceiver! Legit, in my experience most people are iiincredibly nice & helpful on the Discord so I'm near positive you'll meet some other players. If you're unsure use @Mentor & mention it being your first match, otherwise just look for (or start!) an @LFG Casual 1k match & just be upfront you're newer to TTS, most peeps won't care. Not too sure about the table haha, I know what you mean though. Once you get Maps loaded & all that you won't notice as much tho :P Weekdays *can* take a little while to find a match sometimes but weekends it's normally poppin

When you get to the menu to load it, hit the Options icon & select search. Then just drag the decks into the table - Search is huuuuge & def something to learn! The other method is Additive Load but that's mainly just for Maps, it's liable to like.. Fuse into the terrain if you aren't careful hah. Search is way better

Hi, was wondering if you or anyone has had an issue trying to load a map once in the ftc map as I keep getting improper format unknown and I have made sure everything is in the right format as all i did was unzip the battleforge zip file then copy and paste the mod pack in the saves folder as they say to do for battleforge. I have no issues with the anything else its literally just the battlemaps that are getting errors and am at a lost on what to do.

Like 'save position'? I believe it's CTRL+# to save a spot & then SHIFT+# to load it (I haven't tried this myself but that's what Google was saying). Hope that helps! Edit: here's the link I was reading kb.tabletopsimulator.com/player-guides/camera-states/

So I have a pack of Skitarii, with 5 being exactly the same and sharing the same datacard. How can I add 5 models and assign all of them with the same card? It wont allow me to do so.

So 5 unique models but all sharing the same stats? I don't know of an automated way BUT what I do is just copy paste their info from one I generated onto the others (you can edit their profiles by just waiting for the popup then clicking on the textfields). CTRL A > CTRL C > CTRL V Hope that helps!

Hmmm, not that I'm aware of. Closest I can think of would be some of the old skool turn-based games from the 90's like Final Liberation. Obviously not the answer you were looking for but still haha. For practice or to test combos I'll play matches versus myself sometimes, I've heard of people 'automating' what the opponent does with dice rolls but there still isn't any AI involved. So sadly nothing like that yet

I am having an issue where whenever i want to download cool maps or anything to start trying to splay, i am endlessly clicking import for all these assets. I have spent the last like 15-20 minutes just clicking import over an over. Is there a way to just load everything all at once instead of that? I tried additive loading but the problem still persists.

Does it happen for every map or just certain ones? Usually it means the link they were using to host whatever asset is gone (their Dropbox got shutoff or what have you). It's not uncommon to get a pop up or two but if you're seeing it on *all* your maps.... That's weird! Could be a firewall issue if some sort maybe? If it's only certain maps, they have dead links sadly

There's a chat function in TTS so in theory you could type to someone but I know most people are going to require a mic. That said, I did have someone try to play me without having a mic once so I guess they're out there hah (don't get mistaken tho it's really rare in my experience). IF you do try just be sure to mention it in the @LFG post in discord or you might get some upset or confused people :P My honest answer though - get a mic! I bet you could get one on Amazon for like $10 USD that'd do just fine. The mic I record my vids with was like $30 lol

They ended up removing them from the Battleforge download for some reason, check out my pinned comment tho I ended up posting all the maps I had (the other option is to just manually download maps off the workshop)

The index cards should be up to date, once BattleScribe gets updated the models will show accurate stats too!

@@jerrynivison5455 there's a lot of rumors going around hah, some people are very upset with the dev so yeah, could go either way. I THINK we might still get an update eventually but doubt we'll see much beyond that. Kinda sucks, I know the dev is a flake but really BS has been such a vital part of actually playing it stinks to see it probably go away. Good point on the official app, seems they finally got an accurate version up lol. I will say, GW prolly *hates* TTS so we still need an alt hah

...so does it let me play "myself" locally? And does it HAVE rules? Cuz... I know tf out of lore but I want to be able to play to see what composition of imperial guard army is worth my limited time and money BEFORE investing so much.

Yup! You can make a single player match, create your army, use the dice tools etc etc :) Literally only difference with MP is someone else is there Hell I make diorama's & other ultra nerd stuff with it all the time lol :P If you end up not liking it don't forget Steam's return policy too though. If you do run into any issues or the sort just hmu & I'll be happy to help Edit: for rules it's just like IRL. The FTC mod does have a rulesheet but otw you can pull up Wahapedia or read from your codex etc :)

The 'comments' on their last update claims they're working on it, but yeah a lot of peeps are upset with the dev basically being a ghost so it could really go either way :(

@@fatarchon To follow-up on this, the data team posted an announcement that they're working with some of the New Recruit team to create and open-source app for rosters and will have it available for 10th edition. Unfortunately there's no ETA as asking about this is against their Discord channel's rules - but it's still some news!

@@anokosecret9963 truth! For all the issues 10th has had so far, GW actually putting everything out online & for free is a yuuuge improvement so kudos to them on that. I do think 10th will eventually be the best edition, once they iron out all the wrinkles

Oh crap did I not reply? I thought I had lol.,my bad man. Hmmm, try saving just a single model & loading it again. Maybe it was a fluke? Be sure you're going to the OBJECTS menu & not the Save/Load menu. So like... Select a single model -> right click & do save object > give it an easy name "1" or something > go to Load Objects > search for the "1" Lemme know if it still won't find it. Maybe it's permissions?

Yeah you'd use the same map/table size but just have 4 people join your lobby (basically like irl 40k, the table size doesn't change). I haven't looked for any myself but there might be some larger maps on the Steam Workshop if you still wanted to go bigger tho. You can also make your own tables/maps fairly easily

Once you get TTS all the mods are completely free, no DLC or anything like that I'm aware of!

Oohp! Eldar were super overpowered at the time of recording - luckily things have settled down since the FAQ. You won't see that anymore :) Legit it's one of the nicer/helpful communities I've ever seen ever, nobody will care what faction you pick

Yeah man I wholeheartedly recommend checking out TTS if you're trying to play more 40k - def give it a try if you haven't already. Eldar are really fun right now too, still strong af
