How to play your PS4 on your iPad

In this video I do my best to walk you through the process to get your PS4 to play on your iPad. There are some things you need to keep in mind and it's not a full on replacement but if you're trapped in a room without your PS4 and your fiend'n, I got your back. This should work on your iPhone too, as long as you have iOS 13 on it.

Yup. The only thing is the touchpad doesn't work on the controller. If I need to use the touchpad at all I have to try to use the iPad. Because of that I try not to play games that I know will need to use the touchpad a lot.

I would probably check the connection on your PlayStation. If possible plug it in with an Ethernet cable. The WiFi adapter in the PS4 is trash unfortunately.

You would need a display of some sort to set it up the first time because you'll need to input a code on your PS4. Once that is done the only thing you would need your TV for is troubleshooting if/when something messes up.

Thank you! The only pain in the ass is having to pair to the PS4 again. If you have an unused 2nd controller it's a non-issue. I don't lol

Hahaha I usually use my Surface with the controller plugged in via USB. It's just easier that way lol. It is handy when you're not near your PS4 though

During first setup, yes. Once it's all set up, theoretically you can play your PlayStation away from home but I can't speak to that since I haven't tried it.

Once connected, does there have to be a tv or monitor for the PS4 or can you disconnect it from one and have an iPad be the monitor? (I’m way to poor to buy a monitor and don’t have good access to a TV always)

Technically, no. Once it's all connected you can just use the iPad, but if you have to troubleshoot anything you will need to connect a monitor/tv to the PS4.

Once everything is set up you don't need the TV unless you run into any issues and need to troubleshoot. Mine currently isn't connected to anything except power.

Theoretically, yes. There is a way now to set up the app to play on a different network, although I've never tried while in a different country. Everything 'should' depend on bandwidth though. I would suggest connecting your PS4 via Ethernet since it's a more stable connection. I would test away from home but still close by in case you need to troubleshoot anything. I'd love to know if this works for you though.

Love you simplicity of explaining and the visuals. Question how is the lag with remote play, I know some people say it has gotten better but not sure ?

I really appreciate that! I was trying to make it as easy as I could for the viewer. The lag isn't horrible, but it's not great either. I almost always get a pretty bad stutter about once an hour and I have a pretty strong network connection. It would probably be better if I could plug Ethernet into the PS4, it's just not possible where I have it ATM. I wouldn't play a multiplayer game if I could help it.

It has more to do with the modem in the PS4. It helps a bit if you can plug your PS4 in with ethernet but it still will lag a bit unfortunately

I have the link to the app in the description. Click it and use Safari to open the link if it's not your default, that will take you to the app in the app store. If you'd rather just search the app store, search for PS Remote Play

I apologize for taking a bit. No you shouldn’t have to repeat the process if everything else stayed the same and you just had to unplug from power. If you delete the app and reinstall it later, then you might have to repeat the process. Or if you change the hard drive in the PlayStation.

Once everything is set up, no it doesn't. Technically it doesn't even have to be hooked up to a tv at all unless you have to troubleshoot it for some reason.

Thanks for the video, it was very informative! I do have a couple of questions if you're still responding to comments. After the initial setup, can I just leave my PS4 in rest mode, unhook it from my TV, and solely play on my iPad using Remote Play? Also, am I understanding correctly that when I leave my PS4 in rest mode, if I log onto remote play it will automatically pair with my PS4 from then on out? And lastly, kind of going off the other questions, would I have to repair everything if I were to fully power off the PS4 and then turn it back on? I am heading off to college and would like to be able to just play on my iPad without having to hog the TV from my roommates when possible. Also the reason I ask instead of trying for myself is because I don't have a PS4 yet. I currently use a PC but plan on selling it and downgrading to a PS4 before I move. Thanks!!

Happy my video was able to help! As far as the questions go... Yes you can definitely leave your PS4 in rest mode. It will take a bit to start up, but as long as you're on the same network, it will wake up. There may be times when you have to re-pair your ipad to your PS4, but that's not super often. Just remember to put your PS4 back in rest mode when your done gaming. If you fully power off you 'shouldn't' have to re-pair everything, it should save. Just remember everything will be streamed through your network, not sure how your dorm will be set up, but you might want to take bandwidth into consideration. Oh and if you decide to game on the TV, don't worry Remote Play will still work when you go back to it :) If I can be of any more help please let me know. The 2nd gen iPad Pro. Couple things you have to remember. 1. Streaming from my PS4 is capped at 720. 2. This is all going over a wireless connection. Sure it's not 4k quality but the only thing I've ever had an issue with is small text.

You can’t. The iPad isn’t an input that way. There may be some 3rd party software/hardware out there but I’m not 100% sure

WhAt annoys me about playing ps4 on iPad is you can’t use the pad. When I’m in stw I can’t open my inbox and change weapons or make weapons etc it’s stupid. I mean it’s good apart from that issue and it can be laggy but that’s prob the net

That's my biggest issue too. I forgot to put it in the vid but you can use on-screen controls. They're not great but better than nothing. I think the lag has more to do with the modem they put in the PS4 than anything else.

That's a good question. I don't think you can though. I'm pretty sure the remote play is tied to the console, not the account. Would be cool if you could though

Not necessarily internet, but both the PS4 and your iPad need to be on the same network though.

Or a monitor with HDMI and just for initial setup and troubleshooting if necessary. You will get some lag playing like this though so if you don't have a TV for your PS4 I wouldn't suggest playing any multiplayer games.

It should work great with a 4th gen ipad air. Most of it will come down to your network quality. Same basic concept as something like Stadia or Game Pass, the games are just running off your own PS4

Not necessarily. If you don't have wifi though you need to plug both your PS4 and your iPad in with an Ethernet cable. In that case you'd need an adapter for the iPad and you'll lose the portability.

You could play any PS4 game. Something to keep in mind though, if you need to use the touchpad for anything you will have to bring up the on screen controls, unless they've allowed use of that on the controller.

Exactly! Just keep in mind any bandwidth issues you may run into if others are streaming. It'll still work, but you may get some lag here and there.

Yes. Some things to remember. Your PS4 has to have 'turning on from network' enabled in the Remote Play settings. Also you should have your PS4 connected through a wired connection, not necessary but VERY helpful.

Make sure UPnP is turned on, on your router. If your router doesn't support it, it won't work unfortunately.

Technically yes. As long as your PS4 is on standby, remote play will turn it on.

You can put it in rest mode. If you turn it off completely, you won't be able to turn it back on remotely.

Look for a Bluetooth 5.0 dongle that will help with latency. TechKey makes a good one I think they're called. They're usually fairly inexpensive.

I can ask around. I don't see why there would be any issues as long as you have iOS 13. Especially on the 11 Pro.
