ATTN 📽 I have revised this video, please click the card at the beginning to see the new version, with annotations and music to cover the distractions at the end. If the new version does well enough I will take down this version of the video.
The only video that show's two different kinds of pleats and why you always put the belt down first. The material is 60" wide to wrap a 5 yard kilt. For those of you using metrics, an English Yard is about the same as a Meter. Some people say I need a full 9 yards, but I have never seen a video of a 9 yard tartan. Like I say in this video 5 yards is bulky enough, I was tempted to cut it down to 3 yards. I guess they use deeper pleats for more than 5 yards. Use what ever size you want... and if you do find a 9 yard hand pleated kilt video let me know.
-
I will show you how to pleat to the sett than pleat to the stripe/column. First I will show how to pleat to the sett. Jump to 3:55 for Military style pleats (stripe/column), to 8:30 on how to lie down and put it on. If wearing a modern kilt with a fly plaid skip to 10:00 to see why it is usually on the left shoulder (reverse if you are left handed). There is no evidence of the belted plaid existing before the late 16th Century. Speaking of which ✳ always put your belt down first ✳ before the plaid. A couple of times I forgot to put the belt down first and it was really difficult to slide it under once pleated. Do wear under-dungers with your kilt, especially if it is wool, otherwise you will itch.
-
I made this video during Spring Break and apologize for the distractions at the end. If you are watching from a mobile device, the annotations might not appear. I suggest you watch it from a full computer or laptop. Maybe by now they have done away with annotations completely since most views are from mobile devices. There are annotations on my new version if you click the card at the beginning.
👍Please make sure to like this video as other ppl are using clips of it, so you know which is the original Belt-First and 2-Pleat video.
📽If you are planning to copy and re-post any part of this video please include a link to this original version.
▶Stay tuned to the end for a video of me performing "Stirling Brig" with Bodhran in this kilt. Also don't forget to subscribe to see other videos of many other topics 🔔
🐕 In the background you can hear a dog barking (2:00), he died at the end of the year 2020.

I like how your pantless during the entire video until you actually put on the kilt. Keeping things original! LOL

Looks absolutely awesome. I have two tips for you; 1)a good rule of thumb, to find the perfect spot to start your pleating, kneel down with your ankles at the apron edge, your starting pointwill be at your knee. 2)when you put on your pinular brooch, gather ends and pinch it so all the plaid will be the in it. Looks better, and the material will not have a bunch of holes.
@theonebighoss
@theonebighoss 9 лет назад
Well done sir! Not sure if anyone has clarified yet, but the first pleating was to the sett- the pattern continued thru the pleats. Your second pleating was to the stripe, you chose the vertical stripe to show. The reverse you showed (the horizontal stripe showing) is just a variation of pleating to the stripe.

I'm native, and purchased great kilt material at an old fort during an event last year. I started using it as my matchcoat. When asked about its use being documented, I couldn't at that time. I have since found documentation of Highlanders being taken captive and/or killed by natives during the French & Indian War era, thus, a great kilt would have been claimed and worn by us. Shawnee/Cherokee/Seneca/Miami.

Not all plaids are tartan but all tartan are plaids. What makes it a tartan is the symmetrical repeated pattern or "sett".

I would say this is a rather clumsy operation, but the results look great. Pun intended. Thank you for making this. At the moment I only use a short kilt, but I might try to make a Great Kilt for the viking markets. I know its not historically correct, but most people dont know that, so I bet I could pull it off. They had belts and textile, so combining them in a kilt-like fashion isnt all that far-fetched. The vikings might have done it.
@wyattb995
@wyattb995 10 лет назад
no, they didn't. And even light reading and research shows that kilts and kilt like clothing was not something those in scandinavia and of "viking" culture wore or would wear. but you're correct about most people not knowing this information and so you could pull it off, but be warned that if someone like me walks up to you gets talking to you and they find out you're wearing it as a "viking" kilt you're gonna get a history lesson. or simply told that you're wrong and shown and told what is accurate from what information we have on viking age Europe. not alot survived through the years since the tenth century and before but from all the finds they all point towards actual pants and winingas being the only leg dedicated covering(Linen Kirtles and wool tunics being body coverings that also covered part of the legs as well as the torso.) if you wanted to pull it off just say you're a alternate reality or alternate universe viking, shit like that. make come out of the fantasy genre and you'll be golden. however dont use a tartan for a "viking themed" kilt, they didnt have tartan, homespin some linen or wool in a solid color or store buy linen or wool to make it and if you want to add "flare" check into card weaving and card weave some trim for it.

As I have stated in other comments, a cotton-wool blend is best. Wool pleats and drapes best. I think I also state in the video that this is 60" wide and 3-5 yards long, which should work for any body size or shape. What ever you do, stay away from poly or rayon blend; it will cook you in the summer and freeze you in the winter.

With through the roof prices attached to 8 yard traditional kilts. There may be a resurgence of THE BELTED PLAID being worn more and more by men at highland gatherings and Scottish Highland Games. The average Joe on Main Street cannot comfortably afford traditional 8 yard tartan kilt.

The traditional tartan 8 yard kilt nowadays is price wise beyond the reach of the average Joe on Main Street.Therefore there may be a resurgence of THE BELTED PLAID being worn more and more by men at Scottish gatherings in place of the traditional 8 yard tartan kilt. These mills seem to want to price themselves out the kilt building business.

anything more than 6 yards is just over kill!!! since doublewide woll is less than 100 years old , the amount of woll was doubled ,cut in half and bookmatched this was done to get the plaide useing the acient measuring system of I suspect the finished amount of wool was about 5 yards

Hello. I came across your video before purchasing a out of stock wool plaid suiting at a online fabric store. The fabric I got was 69" wide, 5 yards long and 95% wool, 5% nylon. I have a 46" waist, and with how the plaid lined up, five yards was plenty! I followed your instructions and now have a very stylish great kilt to wear at events! You need the whole 9 yards when the cloth is traditionally woven only 25-27 inches wide. You cut it in half and sew the panels together to give you 4.5 yards @ about 50-57 inches or so wide. :)

Mr. Locksly I have a question and I am hoping you will help me. I am in the SCA and I ordered a great kilt to create a very late Scottish persona. I liked your instructions the best and I followed them on how to pleat my great kilt unfortunately I started with 9 yards because that is what the company that I ordered from sent me. I am a 44 inch waist so I figured the extra yardage would be fine and every source online seemed to indicate 9 yards was standard for a great kilt like the look of the pleats the way you did them and need to know what you think. This thing wraps around me twice. should I measure off 4 yards or maybe two and lop them off or should I just deepen the pleats by an entire column? I anxiously await your suggestion. I have a party I plan to wear this to next week and really need to know something this week. Thanks for your time and attention to this query.
@YeomanLocksly
@YeomanLocksly 8 лет назад
+Randall J You probably will have to crop about 3-4 yds from your plaid, even if you do try deeper pleats. I am also a 42" waist and you see what 5 yds does for me. If your plaid is 60" wide it will work too. Otherewise you can reuse the discarded portion to make it wider. Nine yds is only needed if the material is 30" wide. In which case you should cut it length wise and make it 4 yds by 60". If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

The fabric for a great-kilt is usually 4-6 yards in total length. Once upon a time, the looms used to weave the fabric only made 20-30 inch widths. Because of this limitation, the weaver typically wove 8-12 yards of fabric, cut that length in half, then stitched the two pieces together to make a plaid 4-6 yards in length and 50-60 inches in width.

Sorry it took forever to reply, I just now found this. I got it from a catalogue, you can try Ebay or By the sword. Look for a muslin peasant shirt.

How many meters does the piece of tartan ? thank you for your video.
@YeomanLocksly
@YeomanLocksly 6 лет назад
I believe I state at the beginning, and in a few other comments, it is 5 yards/meters long. A yard is slightly less than a meter. Therefor it is 1.5 m wide.

Thanks you , i have one piece of tartan of 4 x 1.5 meter , i try and the result was good for me. I enjoy to dress the kilt like that , i feel more confortable that the commercials ones that i have and it looks more authentic .

Are you insane?!! What do you mean you certainly don't need 8 yards! You only need 5?! A kilt is not a kilt unless it is 8 yards! That is how it was traditionally in scotland.
