Exactly the ssg shot works a treat and It's quick bro Des shipp uses the ssg .

Perhaps fishing slightly overdepth compensates for this?

I do it on lakes this way, but it the water is running sometimes an SSG is not enough to keep everything in place. On that case I use 5 or 8 grs Stonfo plummets. They are not so heavy to cause massive disturbance or put pressure to the rod, but heavy enough to read the depth accurately.
