I'm going to subscribe just because of the cool insert when you dropped the buffing pad. Too funny. I attempted to spray a clear lacquer over a small repair on a very high gloss table. Ended up with a dull area, and it occurred to me that toothpaste might be a way to shine that spot up. I note you repeated that step several times. I'm hesitant to use a buffer since the area is so small (maybe 4 inches in diameter). If you have any thoughts I would welcome them.
@FennahMakes
@FennahMakes 11 месяцев назад
Hi Daniel! Thanks! Glad you liked it! Polishing with toothpaste works, but if I were you and you are trying to repair an expensive table, just use a polishing compound made for this. If your hesitant to use a buffer, just try and rub it in with a clean, microfibre cloth and polish with a polish pad. Hope it helps! Greetings Sander from Fennah Woodworking
@danielgrove1300
@danielgrove1300 11 месяцев назад
Thank you. I will purchase a polishing compound. It's a small area. I said going in I wouldn't be able to improve it (originally a 4 inch scratch dead center in the high gloss top of a dining room table), but my designer client asked me to give it a shot. I will file this one under "should have known better"! I'll be looking forward to your posts.

@FennahMakes
@FennahMakes 3 года назад
Thank you😇👍🏻Yes these work as well! Will take time as you say! If you don’t have a big budget for buying tools, start with buying tools from a cheaper brand. If I had to name 2 tools to buy when starting I’d say a jigsaw and a router with flush trim bit! You can batch out by making a template!

It doesn’t work to polish away bubbles in the epoxy. It’s a way of polishing the epoxy to get it shiny! If you have bubbles in the epoxy you’ll have to sand those down if you want to repair them!

Does the wood have to have finish before polishing the epoxy? I've got a couple of birch slaps which I dried and I poured some epoxy in the cracks. I'm thinking about finishing the wood with danish oil but at what point should I polish the epoxy, before or after finishing the wood with oil?
@FennahMakes
@FennahMakes 3 года назад
You should polish the epoxy first, than apply the finish! If you have non-transparent epoxy you could just sand it to 400 grit or so and apply the finish. If you have transparent epoxy sand it to 2000 grit and polish it (with toothpaste if you like)! Hope this helped you??

If it’s some pigment it’s still transparent right? Go up to 2000 grit!
@PeeVee1979
@PeeVee1979 3 года назад
@@FennahMakes No, it's sort of metallic blueish, not at all transparent. I did wet sand it a bit more with 440 and found some hard metal polishing wax. I rubbed it with water and paper towel into the epoxy and polished it with the sleeve of my fleece shirt. It turned out pretty decent. With a bit more elbow grease it might be even better but I'm pretty happy with it.

If you pour another layer of resin on polished resin, will it stick/hold on each other? or should i leave sanded resin unpolished then pour another layer? I sand mine because there's an error but i need to pour another layer. so im thinking if i dont polish the resin then pour another layer it might result cloudy

Always sand epoxy before pouring another layer if it’s fully cured! Don’t mind the marks your sander left behind, they will be filled by the new layer!!

Do you ever have issues with the toothpaste staining the wood? Do you treat the wood with anything before using the paste?
@FennahMakes
@FennahMakes 2 года назад
It actually doesn’t stain as much as you would think! I treat the wood afterwards but you could and try to prevent the toothpaste from touching the wood to be sure. I don’t know what other brands of toothpaste do, if those stain. I just use plain white whitening toothpaste not the colored ones!

Using your sweater isn’t a good idea, since freshly buffed you can let in any fabric softener or dryer sheet residue into it and it will end up looking less shiny and clear than it could be. If you don’t believe me, wash a piece of clear glass then wipe it off clean with your sleeve, now check the glass by tilting back and forth in the light and see if it came out clean or if you notice streaks on it.
