$5k worth of sandpaper later and 500 hours of my life I have a $5 coaster to show off to friends. I think I'd rather leave it as it is when first done with no sanding and it's still shiny.

Prepare your work area, put your favorite music, a good chair and just enjoy your work. If you have a small electric sander(like an orbital sander or a vibrator sander) you can speed up the process considerably. Once you have the first one polished the new molding will be polished too. Good luck and have fun!

I know I'm very late, but if you try to sand something rough with fine grit sandpaper, the sandpaper will clog really quickly, so you'd essentially be wasting it.

This is the process, for sure.... but it doesn't have to be so exact and time consuming, every time, unless you messed up when you're working with epoxy. You don't always have to go grit by grit, from a 400 to a 10,000. Work your way there but always finish with a 10k and a polish. I generally start at 1000 grit. Go to 3000, then 5000, then 10000, then finish with a polish. But the key is to not have mistakes before starting. If you get a bug or a hair or a bubble because you didn't use your heat gun... start at 150.

What liquid have you used on the sand paper?
@mihaisamaila7646
@mihaisamaila7646 Год назад
Plain water should do, but when I used to polish headlights by hand, I used 3-4 drops of dish washing fluid for a 500ml bowl of water, mix it with my hand and "wash" my surface and sandpaper with it. This slows down the process a little, but it gives you more control and you feel the rough spots faster, because it glides different and the difference is more obvious than with plain water.

Hello:) I’m just getting into resin I actually haven’t even made my first thing yet.. so I was just wondering what sanding it down does & why I would need to do so. Also is that water u keep pouring on?
@BuzzingFish
@BuzzingFish 4 года назад
Yes, if the sandpaper is mixed with water, it will make your work smoother and will not damage your work due to the temperature rise. 😉

What is the polish that must be used ..or can we use wax polish as what we use to polish metals?

Does sanding multiple times make the piece thinner? I want to do this on my resin keycaps but I'm scared it might make it smaller. 😂
@BuzzingFish
@BuzzingFish 4 года назад
Yes, it will become thinner after many times of polishing, but don't worry, it won't be so easy to grind. 😊

Kai Minamoto your making resin keycaps too. How did polishing it work? What was your step by step process which grit to which grit, etc?
@kaiminamoto
@kaiminamoto 4 года назад
@@youtubeaccount0x073 Hi! I decided not to sand it too much 'coz it will make the keycap smaller. I used the 1000 grit just to make it a little smoother then brushed it with some sealant to make it glossy.

Good video. This also can be done with a small sanding machine, like an orbital to speed up the process, that being said, sometimes when things are done by hands they give you another level of satisfaction. A humble suggestion: Please try to get the camera no so close to the work. If you want to do a close up make it really slow so the viewer dont get dizzy and can appreciate the detail or read the words on the items. Please keep making these videos, excellent job. Thanks.

You can just slow down the video speed in the settings, i would be annoyed if they were doing this from further away because it would be harder to see what the process is

I wonder what happens if you skip some grits, like do every other grit, so instead of having to sandpaper 10 times you can do it 5 times and it still ends up polished 🧐 😬
@BuzzingFish
@BuzzingFish 4 года назад
If you skip some grit, your work may not be too smooth and will have some scratches. 😉

That seems like a lot of work for a coaster. Especially when I can get a beautiful result but sa ding off the edges then doing a flood coat of resin.
