How to Portray Atmosphere in a 2-D Painting 

This video is to help fine art painters who are trying to represent real life things in a realistic manner.
To help painters be aware of how portraying a "natural" feel in the painted scene requires a solid understanding of, and appreciation for, Values, Edges, Textures, Well Developed Shadows, Cast Shadows, Light, and Reflected Light. Also covered are aspects of creating the illusion of believable form, volume and mass in the items depicted in realistic paintings. This can cause the viewer to feel these items could be grasped and lifted out of the scene.
Another key element covered in the creation of a true sense of atmosphere is the depiction of believable depth of field.
All of these attributes, when working together properly, can give the sense and feel in the painted scene, that all the elements depicted are really there in the one scene. It can and should feel that there is air between, around, and behind the elements depicted. When all of these attributes are working well together, atmosphere will look and feel present.
With awareness of these principles an artist who strives to achieve, through effort and experience to develop the skills needed, will likely succeed in creating painted images which express believable atmosphere.
