How to power on a cell phone with a broken power button.
If your power button is broken the soldiering required is so precise you will probably never be able to repair your phone. The best way is to replace the motherboard or in some cases the switch is soldiered to an auxiliary part that can be replaced.
There are various methods of plugging/unplugging your phone or battery that may turn on your phone. Be aware, removing batteries and quickly plugging in and unplugging phones can short circuits on the motherboard (bad).
This method involves jumping your power button to power on your phone. It will void your warranty and possibly further break your phone. This method should be used as a last ditch effort to get your broken phone powered on and recover your data.
This method is virtually guaranteed to work if you connect the correct pins with a charged battery. If you connect the wrong pins you could fry your motherboard.
You will need to be able to access the soldiered joints / pads on your power button. To do so you will be removing the back of your phone, instructions to do so for your specific phone can be found online.
Bonus! - Once you've powered on the phone, you can get some button switching software (app) that will change the volume +/- or camera buttons to power on the phone.
eg. play.google.co... (there are tons, I'm not sure which is best.)

Very helpful! For anyone else dealing with some more modern phones you can do similar actions to "jumpstart" the phone- most more modern phones use a flex connector (effectively a plug-and-play snap-in connector) to connect the power button to the main board, you can often mimic a power button input by pressing a thin piece of conductive material across one side of the connector even if the power button assembly is completely nonfunctional or destroyed. I find desoldering braid is a great choice for the material to use, it's thin enough to slide in without issue but sturdy enough to not bend or break like you could get with something like aluminum foil.

Hi! Very helpful video! I have a little trouble in order to weld a power button because the original is connected by a flex and it have 3 tracks. I managed to weld a button directly to the pads on the mother with 2 pins but it's still not working and I don't know what to do with the 3rd pad. I Hope you or some good-hearted people might help me. Cheers.

Ian Witten mine was also be pro 2, I tried a lot to get the right two connectors, but it worked, so I could turn the phone on and saved data. I think there is no risk to make short circuit....

I used a piece of wire out of a cat-5 cable (old ether net cable). I just removed the insulation on the ends. Old cat-5 is a really good source for small wires for side projects :). Good luck!

Hey man, I can't figure out which pins to hotwire since the layout is very different and the phone is a lot newer, the phone is Umi Rome X and it's power buttons and volume buttons connect to the same 5 pins, youtube won't let me post a link but in any case, it's 5 linear pins very narrowly placed

hi. will this work with a galaxy note 10 plus? I broke my screen and when the insurance repaired it they broke the power button solder point off the motherboard and I can't get it on to get data off...... I don't want to have it soldered back on because I'm sending back to sprint.. but I need on temporarily to recover data. is it possible with this phone?

Is this also possible with a HTC ONE MINI 1? I have the extra problem that my phone doesn't want to charge anymore. Every time I try charging it with a normal charger or with my pc the light turns on but it doesn't charge. After a few minutes the light also goes back out.. The only reason I want to restart my phone is to recover the pictures that are on it.

I do! You're going to want to find the physical switch on the side of the phone. Look at that - can you get to the pins on either side of that? Try jumping the pins across the switch. Best of luck!

It has two holes next to it then it's the flex cable leading to the motherboard. Is it on the end under the power button or the middle or near or on the motherboard?

Hmm, looking at some schematics - it looks like the power / sleep button is at the top of the phone, slightly to the left of center. I've never seen this phone before so I'm not 100% sure, nor do I know how it works exactly :(

If you're asking this question I assume you have the requisite knowledge to do so, but in case someone else has the same idea lemme add my 2 cents. In short 'Yes." But I would not use a toggle switch. If you have a toggle switch and toggle it closed it would be like holding the power button down. This would work, but then you're going to have to toggle it off again to have it go back to open (while the phone boots up). While toggling the switch would work, what would probably be a much nicer experience would be to use a "normally open push switch"... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_switch. This way when you push the button down, it closes the circuit, the phone boots up. And you have all the other functionality of holding the button down for x amount of time to do y things... Hey Georgia, sorry to hear about your phone! If you're super worried about recovering the contents, depending on the brand of the phone you may want to have a professional service get the data off of it for you! It may cost a bit of money, but would probably be worth it! This method requires taking the phone apart a bit and jumping some pins to get it to turn on.

Any wire will do. This one was pulled out of an old cat 5 cable. If your button is stuck down you have a different problem, instead of not being able to connect the contacts, it's continually being connected.

Extremely informative video. I have a Samsung a13 that the "side" button/ power button stopped working. No dropage no water damage just a typical piece of junk Samsung phone. Is there a chance you can identify the contacts on the logic board? I'd like to do exactly what you've done in this video. I understand that the side or power button also has a fingerprint scanner built in it as well as power the phone on or off . Any help you can provide me will be greatly appreciated. Samsung has been giving me the run around for most of this year. So long in fact the warranty ran out 3 days ago. I was told by the ass clown from Sam suck that they will do a factory reset on the phone if they get the power button replaced. Even when I said I'd sign paperwork stating I'll risk private info being obtained by unauthorized persons. I don't have the videos backed up or saved on external storage. I have already lost appx 60 videos of my babies playing and snuggling due to an unexpected error when I tried to move them from the one cloud back to my phone.i hope to hear you can help me on this. Hey hey, best of luck with this! Sadly I'm unfamiliar with the a13's. It sounds like the motherboard may be dead if nothing bad has happened to it 😬(drops etc.) I hope the screen is just dead or something and this may help: Ensure the device is powered off. Simultaneously press and hold the Volume up and side buttons until the device vibrates and the Galaxy A13 screen appears then release all buttons. Allow up to 30 seconds for the recovery screen to appear. Download and install Samsung Data Recovery on your PC. Connect your smartphone to a computer using original cable. That's my best guess. I tried looking at the innards of the phone and could not find the switch stuff from what I could see. Best of luck mate!

@@IAmWhil I popped the back off removed the lenses that snap in place over the side button connector on the logic board. The connector was slightly askew. I went to pop it loose and found it wasn't snapped into the logic boards connector. It looks like the logic boards center part of the connector wasn't soldered in 4 places like usually done I only saw evidence of one terminal being soldered. That was a guy piece of gold wire stuck to one contact on the little piece that should have been secured to the logic board. Samsuck is still jerking me off. People think carefully before you buy a Samsung product. They will do everything within their power to prevent you from using your warranty

The positive and negative terminals will not be grounded. Some of the terminals will be soldiered to the metal frame for the button, those are grounded. If you just buy a new power button, soldiering it on is going to be super hard because its REALLY small. Quite possibly impossibly small for a human to do. BUT, sometimes the power switch is part of a really small circuit board that plugs into the mother board via a small ribbon cable. If that is the case, you can replace the whole circuit board assembly and just plug in the new ribbon cable. You'll have to look up your particular model. I hope you get it working, good luck! Also if you're under warranty, just use that :D.

Generally the power switch will be directly under the power button. The button is just a piece of plastic that sits on top of the switch. I'm not 100% sure that is the case on the HTC m9 but it's a really good starting point.

Sorry for the delay in response! The answer is no. The wires do not need to be plugged in or have any power source before doing this. What is going on is one of the connections has voltage going to it. The other does not. When you connect the two the circuit is completed. Normally the switch does this, but because the switch in this case is broken, the wire is doing it.

Hey hey, Yea its a bit nerve wracking as some bad things could happen, even when opening the phone (opening the phone carefully is always my biggest concern). What type of phone do you have? Have you taken the case off? If so when you look at the power button it should have some number of pins on it. If there is only 3 you're in luck, it will be the two sides you need to connect. If there are 5, 2 of them may be dead or grounds and go no where, look at the leads coming off the wires, there might not be any, these ones do nothing... The key is to find which 2 terminals connect to power on the phone. In general if you have a switch with 5 pins, one is for grounding the case, that will be in the middle of the switch probably on the back of the metal case. If you connect either of the 2 pins on the left to either of the 2 pins on the right one of two things will (normally) happen. A. You'll connect the switch and the phone will turn on. Or B. you'll connect either the negative or positive terminal to ground and nothing should happen. When it turns on it should be almost instantaneous. So if nothing happens remove the wire you're jumping with and try another pin (You've only got 4 options). Don't just leave the wire on there as you could be shorting the battery which will get hot eventually. Good luck let me know how it goes.

IAmWhil Hello and thanks for your quick reply. The Jiayu G4 I have works a little different from your phone. While opening the case to fix some other stuff, I broke the power flex cable (you can google Jiayu G4 Power Button if you don't get what I mean.) As far as I know, this little flex cable was only connected to two pins on the motherboard. I can send you pics as well (If you are willing to help me) because I know nothing at all about things like this. As I mentioned, I don't just wanna play around and run the risk of messing anything up, as that's exactly what happened the previous time I tried that. What kind of power source should be connected to my two wires? Thanks again for your help and quick response!

Hey dude, I purposely removed my power switch for a project, how can I make it so the phone can operate with a wired kill switch? Like my own on/off click switch. Can i just solder it to the points where the original power button was?

+Matt Hey Matt, I'm not sure because the power buttons normally work with a bit of logic and not just switching the power. Like when you hold down the button for x seconds it will shut off the screen, or prompt you to turn off the phone, or the power button + some other button will take a screenshot. The switch option may be kind of cool if you can just toggle it to turn on the phone (toggle on, toggle off real fast -> powered on phone), and then longer toggles to do other things. If its a phone you don't mind losing or is just for experimenting on, give it a try, though it may just brick the phone :(.

You can use any normal wire. I'd use something insulated and pull the insulation off the ends, as opposed to something like a paperclip. The wire I'm using in the video I pulled out of an old phone or ethernet cable. Good luck!

It could, if you're able to jump around the power button like in the video - yes. It also has to have a charge on the battery. If you're unable to charge it because the connector is broken I'm not sure what you could do to give it power :-/.

If ONLY the power button got wet then possibly. If the motherboard or something else got wet, and then shorted, unfortunately you probably have some dead components other than the switch :(.

+AwesomeOshawott The blue LED is flickering? Sometimes what happens here is the soldier joint gets broken / desoldiers if it gets dropped or REALLY hot (impurities in the soldier joint heating up). There is a chance that the LED is only there for 'power indication' and does not affect anything else. If your 2DS is still working just fine, that is the case, and you don't have to worry about it. If the LED is inline with anything else, when it goes out, what ever is in series with it goes out too :(. If that's the case I'd contact Nintendo and see if they can repair it for you. Attempting to soldier really small components is exceptionally hard, and its easy to accidentally soldier to other things which creates shorts.

+AwesomeOshawott Its probably just a cracked soldier joint. So if you get it just right, it will work (there is contact), or if its just wrong, it wont work (not touching). Its what caused those old "red ring of death" errors on xboxes. The electrical connections just kind of break and don't quite touch, or sometimes do touch and things work / don't work. But I'm glad you got it!

Look at the power switch on the side/top of the phone when you have the case off. It should have electrical connectors soldiered to the board. There will be between 2 and 5 of them. Most likely 3 or 5. 1 (if there are 3) or 3 (if there are 5) of them will be ground, if you look at where the terminals come from, the ones that touch the metal casing of the switch are ground, and don't do anything. The other 2 that look like they go up into the switch are the ones you want to connect to each other. Looking up your particular phone (I think) you may be able to just replace the switch, as its not hard wired to the mother board: www.ebay.com/itm/LG-T-Mobile-myTouch-E739-Maxx-Touch-Flex-Charger-Port-Power-Button-Connector-/181205683212 This may be a good solution to getting your phone to completely work again. Check that the one thats in there is connected, dropping it may have knocked it loose. Go forth at your own risk and good luck!! :D

I'm not sure what your'e asking. The wire that you jump the pins with is just a straight wire - it only goes from the one pin to the other. When you connect the pins the electricity will flow through that wire...

I think I pulled it from an old ether net cable. Any insulated wire will do, just strip off the ends. (Think old phone cords, old internet (ether net) cables, etc.

The leads are basically where the switch was soldered onto the motherboard. Even if the power button has been completely destroyed (As long as it's not shorting out), connecting the two leads should power on the phone. One of the leads (terminals) will connect to the positive voltage from your battery, this one is "high," (there is also a chance that the voltage is stepped down from the battery, and thus why we connect the switch terminals instead of a random spot on the motherboard with +voltage to the low side). When you connect it with the wire to the "low" side it should power on. There is a chance that the low side is the same as the ground, but on some phones it is not. The leads (or terminals) are directly under the power button as I've attempted to show in the video.

+IAmWhil So basically my leads are not broken,the buttons are.I use an aluminum foil shaped like a needle just to turn it on everyday.Where can the buttons and the power switch be bought?

Hey dude awesome idea! But the problem is that I have an Amazaon Fire Phone and everything is complicated with it. The phone itself is OK, but this power button.
