The powerslide is the BEST way to stop on inline skates in most situations.
In this video, I break down my method of the powerslide and give some pointers to help you learn it quickly, and execute it efficiently in almost any scenario.
I'll also give you my top two tips that I hope will shorten your learning curve, and help you overcome any struggles you might be experiencing with this stop, especially if you're new to inline skating and/or are having a hard time transitioning your hockey stops on ice skates to inline skates.
Learning how to stop is the MOST important trick to learn on inline skates before you venture out into the city, and the powerslide is the MOST stable and reliable way to do it.
Make sure to stick around until the end to check out two of my video recommendations for learning more stopping techniques from some other awesome inline RU-vidrs.
Thanks for watching!

I have been trying to do a power slide for ages, I tried your method and YES YES YES I am power sliding. For me lifting my feet of the ground has been a major fear and it’s one I need to conquer but being able to begin to Powerslide has really boosted my confidence. I love the simplicity of the video thank you.

Spent the last week looking and debating quads or inlines then another few days between inlines. Ordered a pair of FR FRX 80s, should be here in a week or two. Just hoping they fit well lol the sizes are so weird. Old dudes can skate too lmao

Do you have a video on wheel rotation? My two front wheels have been wearing a lot, so I’ve just been rotating randomly. I’m skating 4 x 80 now and just ordered some 3 x 1 10 on clearance. Cheaper power slide model. I really wanted rollerblade maximus. But I love my Fr1s. And the neighbors love me purple and pink glitter luminous wheels. I’m so glad I learned the power slide tonight. It looks amazing. This girl stared right into my eyes after I did it I was like a deer in headlights. Probably thinking how stupid I was because my flashlight was off and no LED wheels on. I wonder if I’ll be able to do a lot of jumps with a 110 wheels, they may be more unstable and harder to learn slides. Subscribing now

How fast is it ok to practice it? I did my first one tonight. I want to nail my magic slide, acid slide and parallel slide. Some people skate for 20 or 30 years and never do a parallel slide, it’s just intimidating.

@@22ryanoc I started off REALLY slow in a very quiet environment (i.e., empty side street or empty parking lot) just to get the body motions down. It took a lot of focus at first to be able to do it correctly. Lots of slow-mo practice. I sped up bit by bit until I could do the power slide while moving at normal speed. As soon as I went to a busier location though (i.e., street with cars going by), I needed to slow right back down to do it properly -- it just needed too much focus and I wasn't quite there yet. I kept practicing and alternated between very quiet location and then back to busy and it worked out really well -- BUT it did take patience and time. Now I feel like I could do a power slide with confidence in a busy location while going at a decent speed.

@@mattellis7730 I guess you’d have to be comfortable doing 180‘s going pretty quickly which I’m not that good at yet. Is a 180 the best way to transition front to back? Thank you for sharing. Nothing looks cooler than a power slide. Hopefully I can get the parallel slide down quickly
@mattellis7730
@mattellis7730 2 года назад
@@22ryanoc Depending on how quickly you need to stop and how fast you're going, the power slide motion changes a little bit. If I'm going pretty fast and also need to stop fast, it feels like I do these steps AMOST at the same time: 1) I slightly lower my weight (small, quick knee bend). 2) My upper body rotates LEFT about 90 degrees and my left (trail) leg rotates LEFT a full 180 degrees. 3) My right (lead) foot pushes out in the direction I'm moving which scrapes the ground and causes you to stop. Couple of notes: 1) The faster you do this sequence, the faster you can stop. 2) The more knee bend you have in your trail leg in step 2, the longer your slide (and the longer it take to stop -- this just looks cool though :) ). 3) The sharper your blade angle is with the ground in step 3 (say 45 degrees or more) the faster you will stop BUT if you go to far, you can lose your edge and flip over. Also, be careful about trying to get a really steep edge on rough ground -- it can cause your right blade to completely stop and you will flip over it (even if you don't fall, it will be VERY jarring and feel horrible). Hope this helps!!

For me, the key to execute was to start from the Mohawk position and instantly push with the leading foot, this way you prevent "curving out" of the power slide.
@igorgoga7985
@igorgoga7985 Год назад
so first you turn your non-sliding foot 180 backward and then slide or do both feet do their respective motions at the same time?

Great video! I can do a powerslide from fakie no problem, but I still struggle to do one from front entry like you’re doing. Can you maybe give a few tips about weight distribution? I think that’s where my issue lies - I have a hard time getting the back skate transitioned to backwards and still keep the front skate unweighted so it will slide and not “stack”.
@northernskatesman4964
@northernskatesman4964 3 года назад
Ah I see. First off, thanks for the comment, and I’m glad you liked the video! I didn’t really touch on the support foot transition. I would probably recommend drilling your transitions sans powerslide until they’re down solid. If they already are, the trick is that you’re pivoting on your toe with your rear foot while the front foot archs and pushes out. If you look at the one freeze frame (5:15) I have where I’m breaking down my body language, you can see that my left foot is actually in the process of pivoting on the front wheel and most of my weight is distributed on my front leg as I carve and push it out. I hope I explained that properly! A lot of it will be just playing with the maneuver until you find that sweet spot.

for me, the pathway (kinda like the skill tree in RPG game) to powerslide should be: skating backward-> smooth forward-backward transition -> one-leg gliding backward--> powerslide. Ultimately, the expert-level powerslide requires Mohawk

88A is great. That’s what I’m using in the video. I probably wouldn’t go too much less than 85A. So that, I would say is the sweet spot. Any harder and you’ll get too much slide and not enough stop. Any softer and it’ll be the inverse. Thanks for watching!

Haven't mastered powerslide yet but what is hard for me is to keep the leading for gripping/bitting down and topsiding me, or from gripping, and thus make you do a roundabout ending backwards instead od sliding. More practise i guess but damn it hurts!

Hi Peter, have recently moved to a city that has many more hils than I'm used to. Looking at ways to more effectively stop. The question is that I'm on speed skates, 110 wheels. does this technique work for those kinds of skates? Thanks much!
@northernskatesman4964
@northernskatesman4964 3 года назад
Hey, good question. Speed skates on hills I'd imagine would get you rolling pretty damn fast. I don't think I'd recommend a powerslide stop at those kinds of speeds on such skates, but full disclosure, I am not a speed skater. I've only ever been on speed skates once and I found them very cumbersome compared to the skates I normally use, so I'm probably not the best guy to ask about this. I can tell you that I live in a hilly city as well and carving and drag stops are a must. I would imagine those are the go-tos for speed skates as well, but as far as hard stops, I'm just not sure. Best of luck!

@northernskatesman4964

Should be. I guess it really depends on how soft and flexible, as well as the fit etc. But you should be able to do this on virtually all inline skates. I would start small and practice carving your lead foot out in front of you at lower speeds and build up until you start to feel it lose traction and slide. Best of luck!
@bxl2012
@bxl2012 3 года назад
The most important thing is your hip flexibility and it can take hours of training and many sessions to get there. With a softboot it's going to be a bit harder to a lot harder - depending on the type of softboot. But it's doable.

@@northernskatesman4964 can beginner do this move?
@northernskatesman4964
@northernskatesman4964 3 года назад
Depends on how new you are to skating. You'll want to be relatively comfortable turning, carving, transitioning, and good with one foot balance. The more confident you are on your skates, the easier it will be of course. But every new skill learned makes all subsequent skills more accessible in my opinion, so I would say that yes, beginners can learn this one, it just might take longer. If you're practicing this though, definitely wear pads and a helmet and practice somewhere safe. Falling is an inevitability at all levels of skating when trying something new. And remember to have a wide stance, carve the lead leg and push it out on your inner edge. Also, keep in mind that depending on the durometer (hardness) of your wheels, wheelbase, and number of wheels on your skates (as well as the surface you're on and other variables), this will require varying degrees of force. Be safe and have fun with it! It's very satisfying once learned.
