My teacher taught me this way and I have to say it is magnificent! Most of us are weak on the top and bottom notes on the sax and both areas have come on leaps and bounds for me since doing this. My low notes now really resonant so do follow this advice folks and you will see a big difference!

I am so happy to see you, using a soprano because there is no soprano at all on youtube and as much as it play in the key of B/ flat like the tenor, but they do not sound the same to follow a tenor lesson not the same Glen

Nice video Jamie!! In my class when we practice scales allways get to the F in ascend and then pass to the bass B until de root again in ascend. This is because there are many scales that the rythm is irregular as G Major for example (we play: GABC-DEFG-ABCD-EFED-CBAG-FEDC-BAGF-EDCB-CDEF-G). I like your videos, congrats!!

When playing a scale, do you slur going up and down or do you “tut” each note?

You can do either but slurring is best to check the accuracy of your finger technique.

Thanks for all of this great information Jamie. I have a quick question if anyone is able to answer this; I'm not entirely sure where / how to easily locate where the flats / sharps are on the major scales? For example Eb major has 3 flats, but I don't know on what 3 notes the flats fall under. Is there an easy way to spot this? Thank you :)

Update: I just googled the major scales individually and then used a fingering chart to start trying to piece it all together, if anyone else is having the same issue :)

There's useful pneumonic - Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles' Father. That's the order of flats. BEADGCF. So if you have 4 flats it's Bb, Eb, Ab, Db etc. Then you reverse it for sharps - Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle. FCGDAEB. That's the order of notes to be sharpened. So 5 sharps will be F#, C#, G#, D#, A#. Hope that helps and let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you. J😊

see here's the thing. I can do my major scales full range, but its kind of sloppy. I don't really articulate and kind of fly through them. I don't really practice with a metronome as much as i should. I feel like I need to get stuff down before moving on to my minor scales. Welp. At least I'm figuring out how to practice

There is no way I can practice all scales, not enough time in the day. Perhaps you can propose a prioritisation for Tenor playing blues and rock? That would be a great help.

dolphyoudick - ok, first of all, no need to play every scale every day. Rotate them. Just do maybe 4 a day or something. Secondly, it’s quality that matters, not quantity. Better to play one scale with a metronome perfectly than all 12 scales in a sloppy manner. Finally, if you’re playing blues and rock the scale you need to prioritise is the pentatonic scale. That is the main scale used in your genre. Get to know all 12 and also transcribe your favourite players to learn how they use it. I’ve done a video on transcription. Keep going! 👍🏻

@@GetYourSaxTogether Thank you for your time to reply. (Time is the most precious thing we have.) Funny thing is that I can play solo's like in "Brown Sugar" and "Us and Them", but am severely lacking in basic knowledge like scales, chords and the likes. I am going to try to rectify that by viewing your material and really make an effort with these boring scales. However, just thinking about having to write them all out is draining the initial enthusiasm. Please keep going with your RU-vid channel :-)
