I mean, I'd say it's a universal thing for any kind of limb action, where you need to generate a lot force in order to achieve proper result. I used to do karate, and our sensei also always taught us to make use of legs and torso when throwing a punch or a kick, because that way the attack will be way stronger and more deadly.
@mr.bluefox3511

So in the nutshell, you simply generating more power but also increasing some stability in your "action", when you put more of your body part into doing it ... in the correct way, of course. Am i right?

In the Caucus, there is a traditional shashka training exercise called trimming the vines. It is sabre-cutting exercise using grapevine fall trimmings. The vines are usually tied together in a human-sized cruciform, analogous to arms and neck. The flexibility of the whippy vines makes them difficult to cut, the object is to have control for smooth follow up cuts. For example “left arm”, “right arm”, “neck”, and any variation of such combinations, also remembering footwork.

The body mechanics are similar to boxing. When punching, your primary power doesn't come from your arms, but from your legs, hips, butt and back. Your arms are mostly just for guiding your fists to the target. Also having proper fist alignment (for lack of a better term) and target selection is crucial as you can easly hurt your hand or wrist when punching hard and with intent. Interestingly, there's also a sort of push pull technique in punching, but it is done with the shoulders. You push your lead, punching shoulder forward and pull the opposite shoulder back at the same time to generate power and extend your reach. However this should be combined with a step or twist of the hips.

When I did cutting with my halfway decent katana (It was made of high carbon steel and it was treated and tempered, but it was definitely on the heavy side, and the hilt construction wasn't great) I would sometimes try to get the bottle with just the tip and see how many cuts I could get on one juice bottle.

As an Alaskan, I can appreciate the need for anti mosquito qualities in headgear... (If your fencing helmet has a hood, it works as a face net) P.S. once you can cut tatame with ease, try a wet paper towel roll - due to the light weight of the target your swing has to be perfect to cut the tube instead of batting it across the yard.

I find that pulling away or pushing towards the stand can improve the cut. For example, if I am going to stand with the target to my right, and swing down at a 45 towards the outside of my body (down and out), I feel more resistance when I stand still, than if I try to be pulling back away from it. (I don't move my feet, just my hips and body, like I'm perhaps dodging a strike). For other positions, such as squarely facing the stand, I can feel less resistance when I move toward the stand, with my follow through involving bending my whole body forward. For now all of my strikes are at a downward 45, although 90 works well moving forward or back with a straight sword. I haven't spent my time with upward cuts since I started playing with the hip and shoulder translations described.

I think the perception of whether cutting is easier with one hand or with two hands will differ from person to person. I for my part once spent a whole weekend camping with a couple of friends and playing around with blades on milk packs. In that time I did not manage a single cut with the longsword but the arming sword already did its job on my second try - and the seax was a dream. Might have had something to do with me playing Badminton before stumbling into HEMA …

Here's an idea if you have a powerful cutter on your hands - wooden dowels in the middle of pool noodles to solve their floppiness issues. Not for lower end swords, but you can soak the dowels for easier cutting. If you have lots of straight saplings where you live, these would achieve a similar effect and cut easier than cured wood.

If you've put together a wooden cutting stand, consider soaking it with water a couple times about 10-15 minutes before cutting. Wood that's swollen and wet is a lot less hard on the edge than dry hard wood. Also please be safety conscious. Maintain a good grip and keep away from that lead leg. Have fun and good cutting.
