FUN FACT: Coconut Oil is ALWAYS LIQUID in Caribean weather! 🥥💧😃 I live in the everlasting hot, humid puertorrican weather 🇵🇷 so coconut oil is ALWAYS LIQUID! I even put mine in a spray bottle and leave it at what would be the "caribean" room tempeture and it is always liquid. I have never experienced clogged pores or hair cuticules, build up from the oil, or even dryness because I personally use this oil after I am done with all the hair routine. I use it for added shine, specially when I refesh my hair after a few days of washing. It' amazing how much I have learned about Coconut Oil from another perspective!

I am so glad I stumbled upon your channel now that I've started my hair journey. I've learned so much already from you and I was a certified cosmetologist for years. I can't believe how wrong I was about coconut oil-it's something I've used literally every time I style curly, for the past 3+ years. It makes so much sense now why I'm not getting soft, defined curls, but greasy, wet looking curls that I almost always end up putting in a high messy bun. I've been so disappointed with my curls and I think using coconut oil daily is the reason I'm not getting the results I want. Thank you so much for creating this channel. PS You're also hysterical and even if your videos might not apply to me, I watch them anyway because you're so funny!

Thank you. This video really saved my hair (or what is left of it). I am an Indian and coconut oil is so popular for hair growth here. So I used to wonder, why is my hair feeling dry and falling so much after a pre-poo treatment of coconut oil with olive oil on my scalp and hair? I'd become so sick of noticing random hair strands on my clothes. I also learned that coconut oil just makes it easier for detached hair strands to fall off - which you definitely don't want in your food or in the kitchen. I followed Mell's method and things improved.

Hi just a comment about hair in the brush for us curly girls. Aside from breakage from brushing dry damaged hair...... We curly's do not brush our hair until wet, usually once a week for the wash. Humans usually loose 50 -100 hairs a day on average. Curly hair is not going anywhere accept into our curly little locks usually making some nice little snarls on the way. That is why we see so much hair in our brushes when we do brush. Sometimes this freaks people out and they think they are losing hair. If you are not seeing thinning at your scalp or breakage throughout your are all good. It is our normal process of shedding and regenerating . I love your vidoes! advice! and channel!

I don't know how I feel about it. I didn't grow up using coconut oil but when it was suggested to me my hair felt so much softer. I've also never had a problem with it clogging my hair or pores because I use it on my face for acne as well .... I guess if you go a month without washing your hair it could clog your pores. Also I think people are really heavy-handed with products because they think it's some miracle... I don't slap coconut oil all over my scalp I just use it on my ends to protect them from breaking off and I mix a little bit of it into my deep conditioners. My hot oil treatment isn't just coconut oil either it's 50% coconut and 50% olive oil because my hair loves olive oil. Been natural for about 4 years now and I honestly prefer olive oil over coconut oil ( because olive oil doesn't Harden) but my first two years being natural coconut oil was my lifesaver.

Mel - First your videos are truly informative and helpful! THANK YOU! I have tried coconut oil in the past and my dry 3b curls do not like it. Coconut oil made my hair very dry and very stringy. I have a dry scalp and read that applying olive oil to the scalp for 20 minutes and then shampooing it out was helpful. I tried this and my hair was quite happy afterwards. The olive oil gave my curls some bounce and spring and helped them form bigger clumps. My hair responds well to olive oil and avocado oil but hates coconut oil. Hmmmm...Wondering if you might know why? What do you think? Have you ever tried olive oil or avocado oil? Thanks again for all the great info!

I use heat extra virgin olive oil as my pre-poo on dry hair and it works great (1/2 T in microwave 10-20 seconds). I leave in with a shower cap (or not) for a quick 15 min or work it in the day before and put in a loose bun and wash regular the next day. So soft! My hairdressers always comment how moisturized my hair is (even though I only did it a few days earlier and get lazy and rarely do it). I have super fine, dry, 3B hair.

It’s late and I will finish the video tomorrow, but first I want to say something: my hair always loved coconut oil. I stopped using it after all the drama but I want to go back. I still use it a pre poo but I was using it in the LOC method every time I washed my hair. I used my leave in, coconut oil and then my cream. So much definition and shine. Honestly can’t see how it is bad. I stopped using it because I am on the start of my natural hair journey and I’m testing things out but I wanna go back

You stated in your video that there are other oils you can use instead of coconut oil, what do you recommend? What are the pros/cons? I have seen videos saying to put black caster oil on the scalp, would you recommend that? Are there different oils for the scalp vs the hair? Now that you tried coconut oil in your hair, do you do it more often? Would leaving oils overnight in your hair then washing them out be ok? How often would you use oil?

I prefer olive oil over coconut oil in every situation my hair loves the stuff and so does my skin. I use it to remove makeup and in the winter I also put it on my skin at night and it prevents my skin from drying out.

God i want your volume! I’ve tried so many things but my curls are 2c/3a and the length weighs down my roots very very easily. But my ends do so much better with a thicker, heavier cream. I’m working on it. Added in shorter layers and that helped a little. Anyone have suggestions?

coming from someone with mainly 3a hair, your hair will never have as much volume as mells. because she has tighter curls, they look like they grow out and up. our curls are bigger and will grow downward. its sad and i wish i had this volume as well but ive come to accept that i never will. clips at the roots while drying o help, but the hair will still get weighed down over the week

I use a root volumizer foam, then pin & diffuse to dry. Once completely dry, remove the pins and your root volume stays! I can't find any root volumizing products in the curly section though...always in the non-curly section.

I think coconut oil is decent in small amount because I used the Shea moistures coconut oil and coconut milk hair mask with a hot bonnet and god was my hair bouncy and soft. Which was surprising because I’ve had problems with other heavier deep conditioners. Edit: I’ve never like straight coconut oil on my hair or skin but this Shea moisture coconut oil and she’s moisture mask was real nice

I love coconut oil for my hair. I'll use it as a pre-poo hot oil treatment like Mell has done, but I use a lot more - literally saturate my hair with it - and I leave it in for several hours. I wash it all out with two shampoos, and I find my hair is a lot softer and my curls more defined.

@epit tan If my hair is very damaged (as it used to be), I pre-poo with coconut oil before every wash. But these days now that my hair is fairly healthy, I only do it once in a while. Yes, I only focus the shampoo on the scalp. But I shampoo twice. This should be enough to wash the coconut oil out as the shampoo travels down the hair shaft as you rinse it out.
@dancingappaloosa8926

@epit tan Personally I do warm it up a little before applying it because I find it works so much better when I do. Just warm it up slightly by placing it in a bowl over another bowl with boiling water. In terms of shampoo, I use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo. Lots of different types on the market, but I like getting one with cocomidapropyl betaine as the cleansing ingredient. x

Clogging hair is the reason you should first spray your hair with some kind of moisturising mix (ex. water + honey) and then put oil on hair, so it will close moisture in hair. Then if you want to rinse it out, you just have to put some conditioner and leave it for about 10-20 minutes. Then just wash your hair normally and your hair will be amazing ;)
