My hair hates coconut oil the way my taste buds hate liver👎🏾👎🏾😡! When I first transitioned back in '09, CO was all the rage. I thought I was on point with my CO hot oil treatments, pre-poos, and scalp/hair products. Yet I couldn't figure out why my hair was hard, wire-y, brittle, and ashen?? Through trial, error, and discovery I realized CO was the cause and I swore off it completely, never to return (not to mention, my hair always smelled like baked goods🤣)! My hair does loooove Sweet Almond Oil, though! 👍🏾👍🏾🥰
I have heard this story so many times!!! I just find it fascinating that one product works for one and not for the other! I guess that's what makes us unique! There's no one size fits all! But I cracked up when you said your taste buds hate liver! OMG! Me too! I remember as a child being at vacation bible school and being forced to eat liver 🤮. I"m having flash backs!!! LOL!
Thank you! My hair turns to straw if I use coconut oil and shea butter. It gets oily and hard at the same time. I never understood why until now. My hair loves avacado oil. It has been a challenge finding products without silicone, protein, shea, or coconut oil. Thank you for this video.
Karen thank you so very much for explaining this in detail. All of us should get to know ourselves inside and out. (Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge). (James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God, who gives to all without reproach, and will be given to him). Our bodies are so uniquely made by our Heavenly Father from the top of our heads to the bottom of our feet. What works for some may not work for others. I thank God for people such as yourself for sharing the wisdom He has given you for the betterment of His people. Your heavenly countenance shines bright for all to see. Karen you are truly a blessing from above! Take care and may God's grace continue to shine upon you.
Talk about making me cry! Thank you so much!! i appreciate it so much!! I know this my purpose and path. It brings me so joy to share it with the world! And thank for you taking the time to share. It encourages me to keep going! Bless you!
Great information Karen. My hair does not like plain straight coconut oil. It does okay sometimes in the winter month by itself, but it just does not like it at all in the summer months by itself.
Karen first thanks, since subscribing to your channel, l use C/O for pre-poos only, that seems to work best for me. I do appreciate you explaining in full details . I have that testimony as well it just wasn’t working for me if l use it alone, however if l mixed it with different oils it will do minimally okay. Thanks again!!!
This was my mistake- putting coconut oil on my dry hair. First time doing this and noticed right away my hair did not like it. It took 3 washes with a clarifying shampoo to get that shit out of my hair. I was so mad at myself. Lesson learned - this is why I only stick to products that my hair loves.
@@KarenofCurlHouse Hi....Loreal elvive total repair, but I would like to find something similar with better ingredients. I will check out your products.
Great teachings and findings on that coconut oil! I've used it a while ago 2nd year natural my hair loved it and I'm going grey 2! I even would add it w other oils also and that worked out great!😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤thank u
I put coconut oil on my hair, not my scalp, and within 24 hours my scalp was on fire and I felt like I needed to be rushed to the hospital. I washed it out and it took approximately 3 days to calm down. Usually I don't use grease of any sort and my hair is long, softer than cotton and gray.
My hair is gray, high porosity and loves coconut oil. I sometimes use the 100% CO Shea Moisture Daily Hydration Conditioner as a rinse out. Per the directions, I usually leave it in for up to 3 minutes; this time, I left it in for about 15 minutes (why not?). Big mistake!! My hair was super wiry and felt coated with oil! 😩The styling products I used on top of that only made it worse (it was another brand's coconut line)! But now it all makes sense (thanks for the demo). I understand what CO does to my hair and how to use it. Thanks Karen!
Thank you My hair has never tolerate coco! It makes my hair worst, hard, very dry , and even create hair loss... I never understand Olive and avocado , almond ....are the best for me Also castor is not ok ! Like coconut! Frzzzyyy rock Im natural waavy type 2 hair I think Im between low to medium porosity
When I first started my hair journey I became a product junky (still am) and found certain products did NOT work for my hair type. I combined all the products that I found didn't work for me and lo and behold coconut oil was always one of the top ingredients. I used coconut oil by itself on my hair and it basically matted my hair simply just applying it. Lesson learned and stayed away from coconut oil in the top 5 ingredients. I heard babassu oil was a good alternative and use that as a prepoo now
Hey There! I am literally creating a video about Babassu oil!! So many people have a such poor experiences with coconut oil that even though it works for me, I'm gonna switch it up too to see what a difference it makes.
That happens for so many people. Try babassu oil. I'm about to release my next video in an hour about this oil and its especially for people who hate coconut oil.
@@KarenofCurlHouse I don't hate coconut oil....I use it for all kinds of things from cooking to making soap to moisturizing my skin ...I just can't use it on my hair.
Hi Karen, I'm late and always a dollar broke👎🏿🤷🏿♀️, But I'm so glad that I found you and the ladies that share your videos and questions that are knowledgeable about change. One of the comments that I bread is just like hers, the coconut oil makes my head itch.. I've had went natural about ten years now, but my silver gray has never bothered me cause my father and his family we're silver and beautiful. My life has changed and I'm still the only one that has our father's hair. The other siblings yes, got gray, but they still has to catch up with me.🙋🏿♀️. Our mother! Well she is blessed with very little gray. And she is eighty + in years. I have time to keep up with my hair. And the change of climate, I'm back in Colorado. So I will catch you and the ladies next.
Hello there Ms. Ethel! Your hair is stunning! I checked out your picture. I always think of Colorado weather as cold..but I'm sure you experience summer months (I think). You keep on keeping that grey and fabulous!
@@KarenofCurlHouse Hi Karen I think ur awesome and yes Colorado Springs CO has summer and it's always been dusty and dry when summer ⛱️ comes and just pray for rain ☔🌧️ when it's dry. I need a Ethel inside out side make over. It will be going on two years that I've been home. 65 yrs and making a change in my life as well as helping the seven siblings with looking after our 88 yr old mother. Baby brother is the only one that has not moved to another State. I came back home here, in January2022. Mom can care for herself and still lives in the house. But needs attention now and then. I'd like to keep me up. But my bills and helping mom leaves me with kibbles and bits 🤔🤷🏿♀️. Thanks for your work and compassion for we women and men, keeping their hair up. Well I'm off my brake back to my art. Til next time🙋🏾♀️💜
Thank you for the video. I have high porosity hair and, unfortunately, my hair rejects this oil because it kinks, knots, dries, and matts my hair. My mistake, when I was newly natural, was trying all of the "best" products. Finally realized coconut oil was a NO for me.
Coconut oil hair dressing may have so many other ingredients in it in addition to the coconut oil. But coconut oil is quite clogging to the pores so it makes sense that the scalp itched.
I love coconut oil on my hair because it strengthens my hair, helps with detangling before shampoo, and makes my curls pop due to the fact I have colour on my hair. When I have to be consistent makes it really makes me hair look much healthier. I don't use it for sealing at all. My hair is high porosity and I love coconut oil ❤
My hair feels like straw if I use coconut oil or shea butter. It feels oily and hard at the same time. I have to shampoo several times and use a detangling conditioner. I never understood why until this video. It has been a challenge to find products without protein, silicone, coconut or shea. Until I do I will have to stick with detangling conditioner. Thank you for this video. ❤
Is terrible for my medium porosity hair also. It absorbs water and retains water. Anything with protein is a nightmare for me. I don't require additional protein i have enough.
Hello there! Thank you so much! Does your scalp break out after using coconut oil? So if you use it in your hair, and if you apply close to your scalp and it gets on your scalp then it could cause breakout. Coconut oil is comedogenic, which means it that may clog your scalp, which would also explain the soreness, and I don't recommend it for the scalp. Here's a video that explains it better -- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y-WwFVYyJMM.html
@@KarenofCurlHouse thank you so much,I stopped using it all together,I'm using Dark and Lovely Peppermint cream(South African brand)and it works so much better for me, really refreshes my scalp, promise won't use coconut oil again,it works so well on my mom and my daughter's hair, but not mine at all🙈❤️❤️
@@KarenofCurlHouse definitely lol,I just watched the recommended video, wished I knew all that about coconut oil to begin with lol, thank you so much for your videos, been binge watching, starting my 2liters water a day tomorrow❤️❤️

Hey Tara! Hope you are doing well! Check out this video -- and let me know what you come up with. Hello there! Yes (generally speaking. Keep in mind genetics plays a part so there is always an exception to the rule). But here's another video that may help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VOVfhWQ6E8g.html
Yikes! Sometimes when my coconut oil is really really old -- it will get those small beads, or when I mix it with certain hair products then I get the beads too, but my brain wants to know 'why'???? So I think I'm gonna have to do some research on this! Thanks for stimulating my brain! LOL! 😛
Coconut oil is best used for pre-shampoo application, not for sealing. You're better off using oils like jojoba, grapeseed (both on the lighter side) or castor (on the heavier), argan, and the like.
Can you offer some tips on my daughter’s strawberry natural blonde hair. No matter what she does any oil she puts in it just eats it as if she never put anything on it.I’m naturally curly and my hair loves all oils.
What if my hair moisturizer contains coconut oil in it?? Can i still use it then? My hair is very dry .The moisturizer is made of mango butter, shea butter, avocado oil, coconut oil and a few other things. God Bless ❤
Yes you can! Because it's a blended formula I'm sure the coconut oil is in a smaller percentage. The mango, shea, avocado oil are all excellent for the hair so I'm sure your product is the good stuff! 😂
@@KarenofCurlHouse I thought so too but the coconut oil is the very first ingredient. Oops... So basically i boughy the whole product line. It's all natural no alcohol nothing so it's pretty amazing, except the coconut oil for me ofc.😭 I may have protein overload cause after the deep conditioner i first realize hairs just shedding too much... then i went ahead and put in the curl cream, milk moisturizer and oil. Then all h*ll broke loose okay😭😭 it was just hair after hairr coming out.. so scary. If only it didn't have coconut oil... it would've been bombbb
@@KarenofCurlHouse So i bought an Apple Cider Vinegar to rinse it out. But it's not the 100 raw acv. It's the acv refresher with honey and green tea..is that still safe to put in my hair??
@@Niaaur if I use products with coconut being at the top of the list even with other oils after some time my hair starts shedding ( breaking off) more than usual.
Coconut oil is not my friend. Takes out my curl and makes my hair look a mess. Using a shampoo bar I wash or wet my hair before adding conditioner and cremes and oils. Since letting my gray grow out I gel my edges. Thanks to you I trim my ends every few months.
Good for you! So glad you have implemented trimming into your natural hair regime! It is still amazing to me just how many people don’t like coconut oil! So glad there are so many options other than coconut oil.
