How to precisely trim brass cases (EXTREME RELOADING ep. 05)

In this episode we discuss and demonstrate two ways to trim cases, and then chamfer, deburr, and prepare primer pockets. Using the Wilson case trimmer produces better results, but is not essential.

Always so much to learn. So at the beginning when you put the 5.56 case in the shell holder, you then pulled down on the handle and the case rose up inside the trim die. Did you adjust the trim die somehow so that the exact depth from the 'floor' of the shell holder to the top of the hole measures exactly what the SAMMI spec should be? Do you raise the empty shell holder first and then screw the die down so that it's stops flush with it to set the distance? Could the distance from one brand of press to another vary based on whether that unit has cam-over or not? I guess I'm just thinking about how much adjusting there is with dies when seating bullets just right and don't see how that gets done in this part of the process.

Very good questions Aaron. The first and most important point to know about trim dies is they are designed and built to SAAMI specs for each individual cartridge. When initially setting the trim die, I raise the ram (with the shell holder in place) and then screw in the trim die. I stop when the bottom of the trim die makes contact with the shell holder. I then lower the ram and adjust the trim die down just about 1/8th turn ensuring it cams over (this is part of the die's design). Trimming with a trim die will result in more variability in finished case length as compared to the more precise Wilson trimmer but still it is easy to craft safe and reliable ammo with the trim die. @@sdkweber As long as you're plowing and not shoveling. I expect we're close to the same age and my wife seems to think I'm gonna suffer from a heart attack or stroke just looking at the white stuff. Hey, no worries on overlooking that part in the video. I expect that I'm probably one of the few viewers you have that don't reload and are mostly clueless. I just envy and enjoy watching those who do.
