Spiral-cut how-to:
Popular in Asian countries, the spiral-cut preserves more of the best part of the fruit while sculpting it into an attractive shape.
1. With sharp knife, slice off crown and bottom of pineapple.
2. Holding pineapple upright, pare off rind from top to bottom as thing as possible. Lay fruit on 1 side.
3. Working around pineapple, cut shallow, diagonal V-shaped grooves just deep enough to remove eyes, following their natural spiral pattern. Slice pineapple as desired.

I'd say that the best way is just cutting off the rind a little deeper than usual so you get all fruit, they're not that deep. Also it will be 5x faster than trying to pick out each of those eyes.

Sidney Mathious I have one and I love it! I actually buy fresh pineapple now because it’s easy to prepare? It works best with smaller size pineapples.

Option 3, the spiral tool, when used properly/well leaves a natural pina colada (or other) container. They are a catering tool to speed making tropical fruit trays. Very popular in the cruise industry and Vegas.

Considering option 3 leaves huge amounts of fruit behind, more fruit on the skin than option 1 or 2, you are better off with option 1 but cutting a little deeper when you slice off the skin, small bits of the eyes are not noticeable when eating, then you get plenty of fruit without all the extra work for spiral grooves or melon balling the crap out of the thing , plus you don't need to buy any additional equipment. Rarely do you need more than a good knife for most cutting tasks. If cutting up a pineapple take more than a few minutes you are wasting time you could spend doing many other things. I got the spiral slicer as a gift, never used it. My trusty chefs knife is all I need.

After coring with the tool, I cut the rind in half, top to bottom, and eat the rest of the fruit out with a grapefruit spoon.

I just bought a spiral slicer (yesterday) and was worried until the final way to slice. The first two are way to labor intensive for me. I have done them both with OK results, but it is a juicy mess and not done quickly.

Pineapples come in a range of sizes (the tool doesn't), and it's one more single use kitchen gadget that isn't needed. I get a pineapple maybe 2-4x a year. The more you use a knife; the better you get at it. This is like a commercial for the spiral slicer because really if you're willing to waste all that pineapple; you don't need the first 2 techniques (and the first one wasted a LOT).

The "eyes" are perfectly edible. This is overly finicky. Like cutting crusts off of bread.
@madthumbs1564
@madthumbs1564 6 лет назад
The bottom 3 crusts on bread are exposed to the pans or polymerized oils which some people are paranoid about (metal in food / plasticized oil ). All 4 crust sides have a higher density (some trying to avoid too many carbs). The eyes are unsightly, can get caught between teeth, scrape or scar insides. The difference in volume when removed isn't going to make a difference to a consumer at a buffet or a person carving one up at home.

In Asia, they have a little tool especially for 2nd technique she shows. Don’t know what it’s called but it takes them about 1.5 minutes.

Is there a device effective for coring the pineapple after using one of the first two methods?
@drthmik

Yes, it is called a knife
@biophile2

drthmik that would be a very long and extraordinarily narrow knife.

Slice into medallions and use a small circle cookie cutter to cut out the cores quickly. Cut into quarters, lengthwise, then remove core. Use a very strong metal cylinder to punch the entire core out (think sharp length of pipe). Use a sharp, long, thin knife, to pierce the pineapple near the core. Move it up and down like a bandsaw while rotating the pineapple.
@seriouslyreally5413
@seriouslyreally5413 6 лет назад
The first technique doesn't mention the issue of the core. Neophytes who have no experience with preparing a fresh pineapple may not be aware that you have to cut out the tough core before serving, no matter what technique you use - something commercial canners, produce counters and preparers already do when they sell precut pineapple. The pineapple cutter in the last example shows a nifty way to easy- cut the fruit but again doesnt emphasize that the device serves a dual purpose besides pretty rings, the corer-slicer cores the fruit.

I work in the food service industry and I've literally cut HUNDREDS of pineapples. In my opinion, this video is really not on point. Here are my tips: 1) Always cut the bottom of the pineapple off FIRST, holding onto the leaves as you cut. Then, cut the top off while still holding the leaves. This lessens the chance you'll cut yourself, since your hands are never anywhere near your knife. 2) Stand the pineapple up and visually identify the brown areas where the seeds are contained. Your cuts should begin directly BEHIND this area. The first cut should be approximately 2" wide or so; if your cuts are any wider, you will waste edible pineapple. If you are experienced using the knife, you can curve your cut to follow the shape of the pineapple; but if you're a novice, DO NOT attempt to do this, just cut straight down. 3) After the first cut is made, simply go around the pineapple in the same manner, identifying the "eyes" and making 2" cuts behind these down the side of the fruit. Most pineapples will require 6-7 cuts to peel all the rind off. If your cuts are uniformly placed behind the "eyes" of the fruit, you will lose very little edible fruit -- certainly FAR less than using a melon baller or spiral-cutting. 4) Once you've peeled the pineapple, you can either use a corer or you can cut the core out manually. Since the core doesn't always grow straight up the center of the pineapple, hand-coring is preferable. To do this, cut the pineapple in half vertically straight through the core; then, turn your knife (or the whole pineapple) and make another vertical cut through the core straight down, so your pineapple is now in four pieces. Now, the core can be cut off and removed, either while it's carefully held straight up, or by placing the piece flat onto the cutting board. You now have four roughly triangular pieces of pineapple, which can be cut into any shape or size you wish.

I cut them this way, as well. And I was a little surprised they didn't mention removing the core until the third and final demonstration. That's a fairly important step...

When I managed a produce dept @ a large retailer here in the midwest, we would use a 4 foot tall Pineapple corer. After placing the fruit on a circular blade, you would simply pull down a mechanical arm, forcing the "anana" through the blade. This would prep the whole fruit in ~10 seconds, yet even the 2ft ones are $750 online.
@CrashBashL

You know that NOTHING can happens if you don't "take the eyes out" and just eat the pineapple, right?! And using the third method beats the purpose of the first two methods by wasting 30% of the pineapple..

Crash Gaming Nonsense! Whatever the corer leaves behind, I simply cut off in small slices, eat them on the sly, and my guests will never know!

Cool info. ATK has some of the best info. But in this day and age, you should deliver this information more quickly. These video tips are too long (should be under 1 minute). And the 4 pane camera thing is not really necessary. It just makes it confusing.

Dave Glo Chris was a perfectionist and that really came off as arrogance but he knew what good content was. He knew what should go into a show and what shouldn’t and majority of episodes were flawless. Now it really just feels like they are grasping at straws with no one to honestly edit their ideas.
