This is my first time planting hostas in the ground. We get lots of ice here in Fort Worth TX. I'll definitely use your advice to put a bit mulch on top of them in the winter. ❤❤

Hi @joy9073 . Thanks for the comment. Yes, you're definitely going to love your hostas - very little maintenance and a beautiful plant. We actually have them as one of our Top 5 Plants for Beginning Gardeners. You can check out that video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ofNkhGDK3A8.html . Also, word of advice - there are so many different kinds of hostas so make sure you write down which one you're getting, in case you get future ones that might be a different variety. They are VERY hard to tell apart. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

Hi @melanieharris5595 . Thanks for reaching out to us. You won't have any problems growing them in pots. Hostas are one of the most resilient plants there are. We've had our hostas for about 9 years, never changed the soil and still going strong. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

Hi 1 love Waters. Thanks for the comment. It's always sad to see all of our beautiful plants die out at the end of the season. But the great thing about hostas is that they're just going to come back bigger and stronger. And the best thing about hostas is that once you start seeing them poke out in late winter, you know that Spring is on its way...and its a great feeling! Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

This is the video I needed. Do I need to keep water them or just leave it like that until spring? Thank you
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 10 месяцев назад
Hi @mypinkcrafter . Thanks for the comment. If you're going to leave it outdoors protected by an overhang, the humidity and moisture in the air during the winter, should sustain it. If you're going to keep it inside the garage or shed, where it would be drier, you might want to give it some water every now and then. Try to water it earlier in the day when it's warmer so that it doesn't freeze over. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

Thanks for the video! How will I know if my hosta survived the winter? It's spring here now and has been unusually warm all month (well above freezing). I see no signs of new growth :(

Hi @LisaJowett: Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for the comment. Hostas can be unusual. We have 5 different hostas in various stages of growth from big & bushy to just sprouting now. We'll publish a short video in the next couple of days, so you can see what we're talking about. But DON'T give up on them - just give them water and sunlight and they'll come back. :-) Again, sorry for the delayed response and thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

Thanks for this video! I have a question. I live in the Pacific Northwest where we sometimes go below freezing but sometimes not. And it rains a lot here in the winter. Should I do anything different than what is in your video?

Hey kkjyhs: Thanks for reaching out to us. Glad you enjoyed the video. Not at all. Hostas are the most resilient plant you're ever going to have. They come back every year - doesn't matter if it's been buried in 2 feet of snow ... and that's happened to us. We have Hostas in pots, going on 9 years - and still growing strong! ;-) You can check out our video on Top 5 Plants for Beginner Gardeners where we have Hostas as #1. You can hear some of the stories about our Hostas from Dan. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

Till when do you water the plants before winter cut...do you water them during winter dormany storafe to keep soil moist .or put in a place were the soil remains dry .
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 Год назад
Hi @BenzPhilosophy . Thanks for the comment. We usually keep watering till the 1st frost comes and turns all the foliage brown ... whenever that might be. Then we cut the stalks down to around soil level and then we store them underneath an overhang of the house to protect them. You could leave them out in the elements ... some people even leave them planted in the ground but we find that too much water from snow and ice and freezing temperatures can mess with the plant. So while they're in dormancy, we don't give them any water. We find that just the moisture in the air, since they're outside, is enough to sustain them. We've had hostas in the same pot, going on 10 years. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to us. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

Do the hostas in containers need watering over the winter if kept in the garage?
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 11 месяцев назад
Hi @barbarakatz4881 . Thanks for the comment. If you're planning on keeping them in the garage, then I would probably say YES, every now and then give them some water. You don't want them to totally dry out but if you're going to keep them outside, over a ledge, like we do, then the humidity in the air and the morning dew is more than enough to sustain them during those long winter months. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

I live in northern Va. Wets November and my hostas are just now turning yellow and wilting. My neighbors are not happy at how they look. Anything I can do nor, or should I just leave the hostas alone until the dry out

@jdgardensnj4563 11 месяцев назад
Hi @clytiecatrett6209 . Thanks for the comment. Yup, I know what you're saying. Ours turned yellow as well and believe it or not, we just trimmed ours down today. So, you can let them dry out a little bit more or you can cut them down now. I would suggest cutting them down now, before it gets too cold outside. ;-) Thanks for watching! Jackie & Dan

I had no idea my hostas would wilt like this during winter (newby here!). I looked for a video of these hostas growing back in spring but couldn’t find it. When do they start to sprout new leaves? Thx.
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 2 года назад
Hi BigBlueRabbit: Thanks for your comment. Yes, hostas look absolutely terrible when they're dying out, lol. But they are the most resilient plant. You can leave them out uncovered during the winter in 10 feet of snow and they'll still come back strong in the Spring. As far as when they start growing -- usually at the end of winter, when it's still chilly out but the days are warmer and the sun is shining longer. I know that sounds a little vague but I would say early-mid March...and keep your eye on them because they grow so incredibly fast. We were going to do a fallow-up video to this one, this past Spring but we were working on so many other projects that we missed the boat. By the time we checked out the pots, they were already well on their way to growing. We'll try do a video this year. As far as being a "newbie", this is a great plant to start off with. We actually have the hosta as #1 plant for beginners. You can check out our Top 5 video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ofNkhGDK3A8.html . @@jdgardensnj4563 Thanks for taking time to reply. Yes, I started to think I’d done something wrong when the leaves started to turn yellow! Googled it and found your video - phew 😅. Seems it’s just doing what hostas do in Autumn. Many thanks, I’ll watch that top 5 video.

Do you have drainage holes in your pots ?
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 Год назад
Hi Jade: Thanks for the comment. YES, we absolutely have drainage holes in the bottom of our pots. We probably have about 6 drainage holes that we drilled in the bottom, just to make sure we don't get any root rot. Hostas are pretty resilient but you still don't want them in standing water for long periods of time. Word of advice: If you're putting hostas in a large pot, the way we do, add a bunch of empty plastic water bottles on the bottom, then add your soil. The plastic bottles will 1) make the pot lighter and you don't have to use as much soil :-) and 2) will stop the drainage holes from getting clogged up. If we replant one of our hostas this year, we'll do a video on that. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

Mine tend to get wet and mushy they never seem to dry out.
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 11 месяцев назад
Hi @teresalee467 . Thanks for the comment - sorry for the delayed response. Are you saying that they're getting mushy in the pot? If that's the case, then you need to put them somewhere where the snow or rain won't get to them, like in a garage, shed, or like what we did ... under an overhang of the house. If you have them planted and they're getting mushy, does that area usually get flooded? Thanks for watching! Jackie and Dan

I usually just use the weed wacker and wack them to the ground.
@jdgardensnj4563
@jdgardensnj4563 Год назад
Hi 69mustang07: That sounds about right! Really all you're doing is cutting it down to the soil. That's whether you leave them in the ground or in our case, you leave them in a pot. We like to move them around our property, to different locations, that's why we keep them like this. Hostas are such hearty plants - it takes a great deal to kill them. Thanks for watching!
