As a very senior citizen living in a relatively stable Canada, my prepping is to shelter in place. My wife is frail and I’m not able to travel on foot very far. We’re both squeezing 80. Age takes its toll, but I can and do garden a lot, and we have much food in storage. My biggest concern is not local war, but food security caused by war elsewhere, Ukraine for example. For the dry foods, I put them in paper bags, fold the top over, then put into vacuum seal bags (I write clearly what’s in the bag) then freeze it for a couple days to kill off bugs and larvae. When I take it out of the freezer, I wrap in towels so it thaws slowly and condensation doesn’t form in the bag. It should keep for years! Last fall I built a heated greenhouse (too long a story for here, but I heat it very economically) and now nice greens are growing… and there’s two feet of snow outside with temps at -30° C overnight for the last month. Praying for peace and working for security.
Look into rain gutter gardening. You can install those gutters on fencing, saw horses, many places. You can grow things like radishes, lettuce, herbs, similar shallow rooted things.
Sooo...I've been with you for quite some time. I did read Selco Begovic's "Memories from the Balkan War," years ago, when it was first published. I'm a "prepper" living off grid, and have been, for such a long time now, well, pushing 15 years, so I try to survive, and "get on." Can one prepare for any eventuality? Dunno, yet. I'll say here that even for me, an open eyed person, Selco's memories really changed my life, and my perspective; get prepared for the worst imaginable, and maybe.... Even today I think of those lessons. I should add...what he speaks of...is terrifying, yes, but real. So there's lessons, big lessons to be learned there. And here on Prepsteaders, as you add a lot of common sense suggestions for, not just survival, but surviving comfortably. That is ultra important. And, you are so right...Food, Water, Shelter, Fire; first. This is all. Blessings
I am so glad that you touched on water. Most folks think that 20-50 gallons of whater is going to be enough, yet it is far from enough. I encourage everyone to take a look nat your monthly water bill and how many gallons you used. That is how much you use per month. Divide it by the amount of says in that month and you see how much you use in a day. Now, knowing how much most folks use, I suggest this: divide your daily use by 10 and that would be the minimum you need just to get by. Multiply that amount by 30 days and see how much you will need as a minumum per month. Now, the last great depression lasted 10 years. If war comes to america, our infrastucture might be knocked out for good. Suddenly that amount of water you stored does not seem like much, does it? But, many resources for water with rain being just one of them. Any and all sources have potential. And some might be pretty nasty sources but if filtered would be fine for growing crops. And forget that expensive burkke filter that if used to filter funky ground water get gooped up really quick. But a 5 gallon bucket with a heavy duty screen on the bottom (stainless steel is the best as it woun't rust/rot out) and then cleaned and boiled "pea" gravel 3 inches, cleaned and boiled coarse sand for another 3 in., charcoal in small chunks for 5 inches. A screen mesh over the top to catch debrit and you have a filtration system that catches particles and toxins. If using the water for drinking, then boil it after filtration to kill ameobas, bacteria, mold spores, and viruses, then use it for drinking and or cooking. Have a bag of coarse sand and another of pea gravel and learn here on YT how to make your own charcoal and you can redo the filkter many times and the dirty sand/gravel from used before can be cleaned and boiled again and again. In the cities, rain puddles, the local aquatic park, any wild water source running through your city/town, and any swimming pool is a water resource. (Though a swimming pool might be better to raise food fish in.) And I hope folks will refrane from getting all political as there is more than your main stream media and government is telling you and it will not only hurt you in the long run with relating to others who believe of know something different, but it will also hurt your relationship with your Father in the Heaven. As a hebrew believer in the Messia, I bid this blessing unto you all from this hebrew nazzarene to you: Shalom b'Yahushuah, ha Mashiach, amin.
On the side of a big rig trailer today..."Remember, first response PRAY, not as a last resort". God AMEN. Thank you sister for your exhortions. They are much appreciated & needed. Xo
one thing I did was buy a few solar lights from the dollar tree and put them in a sunny window, they give light for several hours and can be carried around the house safely.
I’ve been a prepper for many, many years. Today was the first day I lost it and cried. Psalm 91 was what I needed to hear. God bless you and keep you, my sister, and thank you.
Yes, and I would implore people to learn to make charcoal, for cooking , and if you activate it, not difficult to do, good for homemade water filter and poisoning. It's easy, lots of good YT videos on both
MY first thoughts that always come to the mind is, Waste Not, Want Not. In the event of imminent war, count every drop of water ,every morsel of food & the items you have on hand as a true blessing & gifts. Water is a major needed source to the point that the last 2 homes I have owned in the TN mountains both have had their own wells. Both places have also had a year round creek running through it. A Berkey Water Filter System is a must to me & do not regret buying it at all. I have a 250' well with sulfur water & run it through it daily. `My water taste fresh & better to me than any store bought bottled water. Amazingly you can filter 6000 gallons on a set of filters. If you have a well, look up on youtube how to make well buckets from pvc pipe in the event of a grid downed power outage. I also have 3 solar ovens. One purchased & 2 homemade. That is a good way to cook with no smoke in the event you do not want to have a smoke trail. Simple solar set ups can bring you lights into the home as well as other things. My concern is especially in a war situation, fuels will run out & solar is a good investment. 2 ways to do this. 1) Individual solar rechargeable lights. 2) a 12V battery, a 100W solar panel & a 12V battery charge controller. My thoughts was in case of a long term power outage or a grid down attack, I will still have the power I need. I use a cpap machine every night because of having really bad sleep apnea. That was my main concern for power outage. I purchased the converter cord to plug into my cpap machine & than it clips onto the 12V battery. I have already used it several times when we have had storms here in the TN mountains with power outages. For any other cpap users, there is how too's here on you tube how to make simple distilled water using to plastic jugs sitting them in the sun. That will keep your cpap running as it should with no minerals from even filtered water. If the grid was to go down, I have four 12V batteries & four 100W solar panels. Straight up, if were talking war & being attacked, & the power grid going down you can count on it not being restored like we are use to with storms even in a week or two. I also have 12V fans to help for moving the air in the house in summer & winter.
Amen!!! Praise God. Just a few thoughts: 1- How can we call ourselves a servant if we don’t serve God and others?. 2-How can we call ourselves a child of God if we don’t obey Him? 3- How can we obey Him, if we don’t read or hear His words? Thank you for all you do .
Thank you. I really needed your sweet encouragement in these dark times. I have been feeling down but all I needed was to look up “For my strength is in the Lord”. 🙏✝️
I have been one of those crazy preppers for 40 years now. I feel quite confident that I can handle whatever is thrown at me with a high degree of success. I've had careers and hobbies over the years that have also prepared me both mentally and physically. I shot on a pistol team for years. I was a paramedic/firefighter for 25 years. Hobbies; weights, running, muay thai, bullitt bikes, and exploring the back country with my border collie in my lifted and locked tacoma truck(650 mile range two tanks). If you truly want to survive, run and hide, don't fight. If you live in a city, get out as soon as anything happens. If you have to fight never leave an enemy alive(no quarter asked, none given). If the grid goes down blood will be running in the city streets in three weeks. A general testified before congress that if the grid went down for a year in the US, 90% of the population would die. Community is nice, but I can easily imagine bands of thugs moving from prepper community to prepper community pillaging as they go. If you live in a community you had better have crazy security.
Thanks. Christa. I wish I had kept my late husband's Army manuals. I never considered needing them. 'Do what you know how to do' whats at hand, that is perfect and comforting. Big life changes for me this month and I keep praying that the Lord will lead, guide and direct on several big decisions. Meanwhile, I'll just do what I know I can do.
I have been enjoying and learning so much from this recent series of videos. You are so well spoken, and your ideas and encouragement are uplifting! I just love your channel! Thanks so much for sharing your faith and wisdom with us! 🥰
All great things to do! You will need matches or lighters. I've been making fire starters with Vaseline smeared onto those round makeup pads and I fold them over using two. They work great! Also you can store matches in jars....
Outstanding video Miss Christa.. your passion for the subject and the urgency of the times shows in each and every carefully crafted word. Thank you for being that voice crying out in the wilderness. God's blessings to you and yours..
I told my husband that a good idea for light when the electricity goes out is to use the solar pathway lights that you can buy at big box stores. You can leave the lights outside everyday to charge for an endless supply of lighting for very little cost. Just make some sort of stand to set the lights in to put them on a table. They won't stink like lamp oil does.
Excellent video series. We all need to be prepare as things have become unstable, if they ever really were stable. I have cats and I use their sterilized litter containers, bleach and vinegar bottles to store water. They are heavy plastic and the water can then be further filtered. I am not worried so much about BPA as I am about not having enough water. You can also use large construction plastic bags for gathering rain water. I have a wood stove and this winter when wood became almost impossible to find in my area I was able to contact a neighbor higher up and bought several cords. Food has always been stocked as I am rural but, after the last two years I have included more long term solutions and educated neighbors.
The jugs my cat litter comes in has 2 on the bottom that means it is a food safe container. There are other numbers that mean the same Google remembers much better than I do. Lol. God Bless!
@@StoptheChaos7 mine also has a 2 but, my daughter had told me that the containers that are used for litter do have BPA. Maybe they don't. Either way, in a life and death situation I am not going to worry about it. Especially, if a lack of water lasts for over 30 days then I will be purifying lake water. When He said to keep oil in your lamp, I took that literally and also to mean to prepare. God Bless us all.
So I came here to RU-vid to get info and or but not be altered and whipped up into a frenzy , I think I found my main channel from now on. You are blessed with a mellow and loving, kind spirit, and I like that . Prep but don’t despair and trust in God, that’s a good motto to have, it’s also the way I look at life and it works for me. I’m glad we found this channel . Keep up the good work and may God bless your family even more.
I am so glad to reconnect with your channel. I have been so distressed over other Christian preppers being so angry and ranting. They believe they are justified because everyone are not listening or disagree. You have a gentle spirit and I can listen and glean without being ranted at. I am doing my best and not perfect about prepping. Many times hubby and I are not on the same page. But still doing my best, with a gentle sprit from God. I am in tears as the other Christian lady said I was to bull doze my way into prepping no matter what your hubby says. Talk back she says and be a strong woman in the Lord. Yikes! No thank you. God IS helping me and little by little am preparing. Thank you for being so kind.
8:24 that’s why you also want to watch Prepsteaders video on making ghee! Get 10# unsalted butter some fresh Ball canning jars and lids and make one or 2 large batches of ghee.
I've been prepping for over 5 years for this season of possible disaster. The oil lamps is a great idea! Candles would work too for heat and light. Chain saw gas, extra chains, and bar oil is always a good thing to stock up for winter season. Berkey water filter is so nice for filtering! A few buckets under a down spout will catch quite a bit of rain water for bathing and such.
A little trick I learned over the years is that if you take an oil lamp and take a paracord bracelet and wrap around the thinner diameter / grip area of the lamp, it becomes a tactical survival oil lamp. I'm pretty sure that is accurate. Similar mundane items immediately become tactical survival once paracord is tossed in the mix. On a serious note, great video. But that is always my comment to prepstedders. Great content. For part 5 can you share...favorite stray cat recipes? Lol
In the 70s to 90s, air mattresses were filled with water and placed in the liner. You can fill one or several and store under a bed. God bless you all.
ethanol GEL at restaurant supply stores. $16 a gallon. this is what catering companies use to heat their food trays with. CO2 alarm if you burn indoors. rancid oil also burns in oil lamps and rocket stoves. lard candles.
I try to be a blessing to someone every day. Yesterday I took a friend to the garden centre and helped her pick out vegetable plants so she can start a vegetable garden. I gave her potassium iodine tablets, and jumbo tealight candles.
Awesome advice!👍 my next project is getting some gas cans filled with the gas stabilizer, and rain catchment. This I shall do this weekend! Thank you!🙏🏻
I would like to thank you for this very thought out series that is presented in such a calm and soothing manner. I had never thought to save our little containers just in case we need to share without cluing in the recipient that we have inventory. I will definitely be saving all of my ricotta containers etc in the future. When stacked they take up little room and could very well save our lives.
You are such a pleasant lady. Thanks for the vid. If a disaster hits and you have 2 bathtubs you can fill one with tap water if you have city water line.
I feel more than certain that I will never meet you in this lifetime, however, I sure look forward to meeting you in the next. Thank you for your words of wisdom and for sharing some gospel with us. ❤️🙏❤️
People sometimes forget that when they are talking about sanitization, think about disposing of human waste? Waste products and trash have to be disposed of daily!
I have some very 8 large square plastic bins with close fitting lids that I use for tools and dry other storage. They can be sterilised with bleach. They each contain about 50 litres. Very good for collecting rain water from drain pipes. On the subject of tools, I am going to go through next week to make sure I have all my hand tools in good order, blades, string, wire, tape. I have plenty of screws, bolts, fasteners, sealants, glues, tarpaulins, all for mending anything that breaks. I am getting a hand drill brace too as I assume there is no electricity for several weeks. I am in the UK and we are very likely without electricity some days this winter. I have a good stock of wood, coal and barbecue gas and several open fires in the house. I live in a town but on the edge near countryside so plenty of chance to get more fallen wood. If we have electricity for a few hours each day we have rechargeable 12 hour LED lamps. I have been putting this in place for 6 months. Amazing to me that people simply are not getting even slightly prepared at all with war on the edge of Europe.
Hi, I love the old “hurricane” lamp, to your left! 🇬🇧 U.K. reporting in.. There are only a few of us old “Scouts” left here in the U.K. I so wish that the U.K. had “girls” no insult, like you. Fortunately my 3 daughters have your skill set, my grand kids are going to make it, thank you for your work, kind regards tim.oh we all pray everyday! Nooo, ps 18, 34 and 91 apply to us daily, I have to give you, just for that, XXX, see you at the bimah getting your crowns!
Suggestion: If you store gas use it often. When your vehicle needs fuel, dump your cans into the vehicles tank and then refill your cans. By doing this, your gas will always be fresh. If you have several cans and only one will fit in your vehicle, just rotate a can every time you need fuel.
I agree with having oil lamps (one of my first preps over a decade ago!), but I'm also a huge fan of solar lights, such as Luci and Goal Zero. Some are inflatable and they're super lightweight, so I have them in the windows of nearly every room. And last year I bought the version that comes in a hard plastic case and also has a USB charger. I gave them as Christmas gifts to family members and they were happy to have them when the power went off from the ice storm last month!
Remember if we're not using cars for whatever reason, there's oil and transmission fluid, differential oil in the rear drives, grease in joints, and plenty of parts we can improvise with. Keep in mind the fumes and add fresh air if inside.
Was about to hook up a rain water collection system from my roof gutters. Mean time, I'd to get a few slate tiles fixed - turns out not slate! Turns out to be asbestos fibre reinforced concrete artificial slate - Plan B needed - but be sure you're confident collected water is harvested from a "safe" system
Our porch has blistering heat during the summer. I am going to use my black and metal crockpot to cook with during the summer and see if it will work as a solar oven.
I know you wanna be helpful to people showing up at your door. While I agree we should be helpful not harmful we have to admit the people showing up at your door might not see your small gesture of humanity as suitable. I realize everyone isn’t a gun person but I’d suggest getting a firearm and a few boxes of ammunition. Just having it around brings a little comfort that you won’t get steamrolled easily. I’d also suggest getting some kind of door reinforcement system like a buddy bar door jammer. You wouldn’t believe how easy it is to kick a door open in one kick. A buddy bar will buy you a little time to get to your weapon.
You can save your egg shells and grind them up to make a fertilizer For your plants , also you can boil egg shells and also banana peels to make a liquid honeade fertilizer and water your plants. ( Just throw away peels and shells )
✝️✝️✝️ For fuel storage, over the years I've used moth balls (the napthalene type) to long term preserve gasoline. Approximately 6 balls per gallon. They desolve slowly and raise the octane rating slightly to stop the fuel from getting stale. Normally, the approximate shelf life of gasoline is 6 months. I've been doing this since the 60s with good results. Remember, this is for a longer term storage. Don't expect it to instantly raise the octane rating .also works in fuel tanks of vehicles and equipment. Thanks you for all your wonderful work and videos. GOD bless you.
We lived this after hurricane IDA . There was no gas stations in town. We had to drive 2 hours and had to wait 3-4 hours in line to run our generator!!
You have helped in giving me comfort. My husband is not ready to accept the truth but he is willing to make pemmican. Funding your Channel is a blessing!!
During imminent war, you have to be a gray man, which means don’t show off your essential items and any flame such as kerosene lamp can detect smoke and plus it’s dangerous inside the house. It will catch fire. Probably a mr buddy with small Coleman propane stove will work or hand warmers to keep you warm or get extra blankets and layered up. Any candles inside the house is dangerous, especially you have kids. Get cam lights or glow sticks for light source and get lanterns, flashlights with extra batteries. For sanitization, get hand sanitizers, wet wipes, Lysol spray and disinfectant wipes and spray. You should fill food in any containers that you eat everyday. If you live in a small apartment, for storage, utilize under the bed, get 4 tier shelves, get storage bins, use under couch etc. For water, use water filters to filter water and always be prepared and watch your surrounding.
Quick question, how do you store all of these? I was looking into a kerosene heater because my mom is on blood thinner, also on oxygen, and I need a way to keep her warm without using electricity. But it says that you can't store gasoline and kerosene together in the same space. How do you store them or space them out enough?
We have a pond, small stream, and in ground pool on our property. I also have a 50 gallon rain barrel I use for watering the garden and chickens. We would use pond and pool water for flushing toilets and washing clothes. You've reminded me that I am lacking proper water filtration and treatments in my stores. Thank you! Any one that you prefer in particular? We also have a few homemade rocket stoves that I absolutely LOVE to use. We made a video years ago of our first one :)
You forgot to tell people to make sure they have a manual can opener or preferably two. Also, some extra wicks for the oil lamps (they are different sizes pick the one you need). And Matches/lighters! Learn how to make firestraws. You can actually make those but fill with salt, pepper, sugar, Tylenol/Motrin, medication, all kinds of things instead of fire making things. LABEL THEM VERY WELL! People can make a 'hobo stove' if they had to. Or buy a Firebox stove. Make an Arizona Penny can stove (but you need alcohol to run it). Propane won't last long if you intend to heat with it so buy more blankets. Many houses don't have fireplaces. And heating with that takes a LOT of well seasoned wood. Wood burning stove is more efficient. About rain catchment - better do research on that. Most roofs are asphalt type. Those can leech chemicals into your water catchment. Only a rolled seamed non soldered copper roof is the safest. Fallout will contaminate your roof surface and eventually your water catchment.
I’m sorry to say but copper often contains arsenic. Many smelters will not work with copper that has more than 0.05% arsenic due to its toxicity. I would not drink any water from a copper roof.
