Part 1 of my guide working with the underrated softwoods of 2x4. I will be preparing, staining, and finishing low cost, pressure treated lumber available at any big box department store.
Because softwood generally requires more, or different preparation than most hardwoods, the low cost, and high availability of dimensional lumber is hard to not consider for a project. This is the basic method I use to replace expensive hardwoods with “throw away” building materials using basic tools at home.
This project consists of creating multiple floating shelves for our finished basement bar area. I will be joining two boards by width, conditioning, staining, and sealing each piece to match the counter, and bar top in our basement.
