You forgot to tell viewers that you have to wipe off the water from the inkstick after grinding cause the inkstick would absorb it and would cause it to deteriorate easily. But anyhow, this is an informative video.

So I found a set of what seems to be color ink sticks and also a separate black ink stick at a yard sale. The box is rather ornate and it looks pretty old. The colored sticks have a gold dragon on one side an Japanese characters on the other. As for the black stick it has Japanese characters on one side and pandas on the other. Maybe they are Chinese because of the pandas? IDK, but they are nice quality. Can anyone help?

I have a few of these ink blocks in various colors. Yellow, green, red... in new to this and I wanted to experiment with ink and watercolour paint. Do I need separate grinding stones for each color? Does the grinding stone soak up the ink? For example can I grind black ink, wash the stone and later grind yellow ink? Or will the yellow ink be tinted from anything that might soak/stain the stone?

I was just wondering if you don't have any wool felt pad or polyester felt pad to lay underneath the rice paper? I only have newspaper or magazines or cardboard. So if not writing Japanese calligraphy with ink brush/ for too long let's say for example around 20mins- 40mins (less than several hours available to practice per day), to practice, despite newspaper not being very good surface will it be okay/ suffice for short term/ temporary use until I can buy felt pad?

+Girom Christian Calica you can use an unglazed porcelain tray or dish...or a similar unglazed ceramic like unglazed stoneware,...the surface is slightly abrasive and will work to grind your ink stick...on ebay they sell antique porcelain ink "stones" so we can assume the japanese or chinese used ceramics as an alternative to the traditional stone.

@ildikoedit9110
@ildikoedit9110 6 лет назад
Japanese people adopted many things from Chinese culture, for example calligraphy, these special painting tools, and the characters for writing. They also developed their own Japanese writing system, but they mix it with the Chinese symbols. So everything said in this video, can be about Chinese or Japanese, too.

Excuse me, Mr. Martinez--I don't understand.... Obviously, you're devoted to sumi-e art and calligraphy. Why then, would you not grind your ink in a thoughtful manner? Your rapid circles of grinding are inappropriate; SLOW circles while being mindful are really the proper method. Second, you didn't hold your ink stick vertically! Come on, that's fundamental. And then every so often, one should turn the stick around--to ensure that the bottom of the ink stick stays exactly perpendicular to the stone. I really don't get it.
@alinelaura7714
@alinelaura7714 8 лет назад
As he explained the correct procedure at the beggining, I believe he went with the innapropriate but quicker method for demonstration purposes, since the whole process would take way too long to record. Judging by the way his ink stick looks, he does is correctly normally but for this demo, he did it like that.
