Nice experiment. You should have had a control where you leave an opened bottle with no treatment at all. No one would expect to it to keep after two weeks but the difference between that and the Coravin treatment would have been interesting to hear. Great content as always. Thanks.

Seems they just reduced the LE VERRE DE VIN system unit for sparkling and made it in small size ... I used LE VERRE DE VIN for sparkling in Norway, working as a head sommelier, helped me save most of the sparkling wines by the glass... went to nearly 0% loss on sparkling with it
@drmatthewhorkey

I can’t figure out how much that unit costs on the internet for some reason hahaha

@@drmatthewhorkey I'll try to ask my boss the cost of a Le Verre De Vin, but it doesn't look like it's meant for regulars consumers, only bars and restaurants.

That's very cool to hear, we actually don't use the sparkling function on our unit at Vin Bjørvika in Oslo, we haven't replaced the CO2 tank in ages. Where were you working by the way?

Nice review. I'm considering purchasing it. I'd love to drink more sparkling wine, but just don't want to drink the entire bottle myself. Nomos Zurich watch? Nice.

Good eye!! It's the 6th Avenue special edition. I was quite surprised by the results... That being said, this is a niche product. I know I'll be using it.

I must say I was very sceptical about the device, but it seems to work well. As was said by you and other commenters, it's probably not necessary for most people. I bought a pretty decent stopper for sparkling wine bottles and the Champagne is still pretty good the next day and I never need more than 2 days to finish a bottle 🥂
@drmatthewhorkey
@drmatthewhorkey Год назад
That is a good option for most people! I believe this is best for wine bars or people that like to have multiple bottles open.

Really great video, I suppose one could use this to carbonate any wine
@drmatthewhorkey
@drmatthewhorkey Год назад
I guess you could, but it's a bit pricey to recarbonate those simple proseccos hahaha

Nice comparison. Would have been interesting to include a bottle sealed with an ordinary sparkling wine stopper. A stoppered bottle of sparkling wine will naturally have a layer of carbon dioxide over the liquid. The advantage of the Coravin system is that there is some pressure in the bottle to help retain some of the carbonation. Any idea of the amount of pressure the Coravin puts in the bottle? Is it worth the price and effort if you only keep the bottle for one or two days?
@drmatthewhorkey

I have had experience putting any kind of tight toppers on Champagne for a few days and the wine still being enjoyable. This is for wine bars and people that are crazy about their classical method sparklers and I want to have several options readily available (and where price is no consideration).

Great video! Quick suggestion: If you're going to do a tasting like this maybe you should pour 3 glasses, 2 the same and one different. Then you pick the odd one out. Now I am not sure there actually was a difference because you said it was close and the odds are 50/50. You have the open bottle anyway so might as well :P
@drmatthewhorkey
@drmatthewhorkey Год назад
That is a good idea!! Will keep in mind for next time.

@@drmatthewhorkey Can I even suggest 6 glasses? Two from Coravin, two from a freshly opened bottle and two from a bottle with a normal stopper (no CO2). That would be an interesting blind tasting from six glasses after a week or so of opening the bottles. Thank you.

how does it keep if it is opened multiple times? Would it make a difference if you opened it every day versus just at the end of the 2 weeks

I have been using it lately and consuming a bottle over 3 days opening multiple times and it's been great.

7$ for a CO2 capsule seems insane to me. But Coravin is the only one who is offering this to regular consumers, so they get to set the price... That gigantic cap that you have to use makes it really difficult to use in bars and restaurants though.
@drmatthewhorkey
@drmatthewhorkey Год назад
I can definitely see that if space is short. I see all the cons too. The unit works surprisngly well, it’s up to the individual if they want to make the investment. Totally see where you are coming from though
@karlinggard
@karlinggard Год назад
@@drmatthewhorkey It's really nice that the system works so well, I can see the appeal for home usage. If you have the money to spare, and need to preserve Champagne better than how regular Champagne stoppers do, then this system is the one to get. But yeah, for bars or restaurants this is just too much of a hassle to use on a busy day. Fabien mentioned the Le Verre De Vin system, which functions identically, but the stoppers are waaay smaller and it's a lot quicker and easier to use.
@drmatthewhorkey

@@drmatthewhorkey I'm not sure how easy it is to get ahold of for normal consumers, as it requires an installation. My boss said he didn't remember exactly how much the Le Verre De Vin system cost, but he thought it was close to 2000$. Maybe it would be easier for you to test it at a restaurant that already has it installed?

I was excited when I heard about this, then realised it’s just a handheld Verre de Vin. VdV uses larger canisters and the stoppers cost loads less. This isn’t useful on the on trade when you can get a VdV sponsored by your main champagne supplier.
