It kind of makes sense the Repour might work better in the short term since it absorbs O2. But the Coravin is really superior for longer term storage. Also, the more headspace you have with a Coravin the higher incidence of oxidation. I haven't had a wine go 4 years, but I did have a Don Melchor go 18 months with no issues. I did a comparison of a current vintage and a vintage from 2 years prior a few years ago. Other than vintage variation, the Coravin rocked. The only other problem I've had is that not all corks are created equal. So I now leave a bottle upright for at least 24 hours before laying down. I've had problems with leakage because the cork didn't "heal" completely. Thanks for the video, it does a great job of explaining the different systems.

I agree with you on long term storage with Coravin since Repour reportedly only keeps wine fresh for two months. For wines I want to kee for a bit, I still have a lot of success with Coravin. For those I want to drink in the short term? Repour is the way to go for me from now on. Nice tip for those about the 24 hour rule.

Great video. I was Coravin user up until a couple of years ago and did a similar test with five friends where we each bought the same bottle of red and white wines and Coravined them at one week intervals. At the end of Week 6 we did a taste taste and there were some mistakes guessing how old the wines were but the consensus was most of us could tell that the Coravined wines were not fresh. It was hard to tell at the one week mark but after two it was fairly discernable, moreso for whites than reds. Stopped using the clunky and expensive Coravin after that and switched to the easier Repour. The longest I've used it on a bottle is about two weeks (with no issues) so I have no idea how it would hold up after that. By the way, you should have had a new unopened wine as a control. It probably would have been easier to taste the difference between the opened wines.

Nicccee test by you guys! The thing I do like about Coravin is being able to cellar the wines for a long time and the wines hold up. I thought about a fourth bottle but the shop only had three of these left!

Love the original Coravin (I bought it early on and have given several as gifts). I also use Pungo (I have 2 - one for red and one for white, because it's easiest just to leave it in) - that works really well for a few weeks. I don't really use it for longer, because it's easiest just to use up the bottle. I have only used repour a few times, but it seems to work well.

Hi Matthew, I just started into the wine hobby as someone who loves craft beers. As the only person who drinks wine in the house this video is going to save me a lot! I was looking at options to save wine after opening. I stumbled upon the coravin because it seems to be used the most and advertised the most. I'm glad you were able to share the repour. I'm definitely going this route!

Nice comparison... I only tried the Coravin with the needle and the Pivot, and the Vacuvin system at home... It really depends the wine and the bottle size usually, each of them get their pros and cons... Usually we finish the bottle just to be safe now ;) I also tried pro equipment such as La Tour du Vin and Enomatic... La Tour du vin was by far the best to save money on sparkling wines which are often the biggest loss ( served by the glass) for restaurants

Great video and thanks for the discount code! My only comment is that with such little wine being poured out of the bottle, there's not much room for air so the repour would do a good job at resealing the bottle, but had you taken out more wine perhaps the coravin (which I cannot afford anyways) would have performed comparatively better since it takes air out and replaces with a different inert gas
@Iastiven
@Iastiven 2 года назад
I've looked at how repour works and maybe my comment doesn't make sense since they claim it "absorbs oxygen from the bottle until there's none left". I'm not sure I believe that since if it's not replacing oxy with something else it would create a vacuum.

The Repour looks like a good system for someone like me, who only gets expensive bottles rarely. I don't think I would use it that often though because even if I buy a 20 Euro bottle (which I don't consider to be super cheap) the Repour would add about 10% extra cost per bottle. I wish there were a system that doesn't require you to buy pretty expensive stuff after the initial purchase (like the argon gas), I would rather spend a bit more initially and know that it will be a good investment in the long run. But well, it is what it is. Regarding the affiliate links: it could be a good idea to also have links to the larger Amazon EU sites, not sure how much extra work that would be though.

Most of the time Coravin does the job I think but Ive experienced a few disappointing moments. Le serre nuove 16 1/3 bottle consumed with Coravin, after 2months the wine turned into vinegar. Coravin advertises the preservation upto 90days if I remember correctly. Probably have something to do with the cork condition?
@drmatthewhorkey

Coravin claims that it can last years And from personal experience I’ve had success with bottles lasting over four years from the time my first accessed them. And you’re right about court condition, not all corks are created equal, but usually nicer wines have superior corks and I find that’s what works best with Coravin.

Great question, the Coravin can, according to Dr H, keep a bottle fresh for years after “tapping”, how does the “RePour” do after a longer period of time, or better question, what is the longest period of time the wine is still drinkable? 3 weeks? 2 months? etc ~ thx ☺️

@@drmatthewhorkey question is Day 1 Pop bottle drink one glass and Put Repour cork day 14 pour another glass we still have wine do we use new cork or use same cork… if we can use same corn then why can’t we use this cork multiple time? if it’s a chemical reaction sucking oxygen out from bottle then we can’t use it more then once … correct?

Great video. So informative. I didn't see anyone mention the 1/2 bottle (375ml) method. If I know I'm only drinking a couple of glasses from a bottle, I'll pour it into an empty 375, cork it, and drink the rest on the first day. That usually extends the drinking window a couple of days for the remainder. Depends on the wine, and it's no substitute for these devices. Cheers!

Hi Matthew, after watching your videos I bought Coravin (amazing!) and the repour product as well. I was very disappointed with the repour. I tried it on 2 bottles of a red wine (Gerichke cab and Austin Hope cab) and it didn’t keep it fresh more than 3 days in the fridge. Repour didn’t do a better job for than the regular vacuum stopper. The smell and taste of the wine was affected, I stored in fridge vertically and didn’t open more than 3 times each bottle. Also the film appeared on the surface of the wine, and I was very very disappointed with that purchase, because you advertised as a a substitute to coravin. I’m not sure how much you’ve tested it, but for me it simply didn’t work.
