Fresh cut garden peonies for weeks or months…here’s how to do it:
Cut the buds when they have just started to open (you can see the petal colors, but the green is still covering them)-they shouldn’t be rock hard, but a little squishy, if that makes sense.
Shake off any ants. Shake again. Then again to make sure.
Make sure the stems, leaves and buds are dry. Moisture is your enemy when storing the buds.
Wrap in several layers of newspaper (I know others who have wrapped in plastic wrap) and make sure it is fully closed. You can wrap each newspaper wrap in a plastic bag to ensure this.
When you are ready to let them bloom:
Remove from the fridge and gently unwrap.
Snip off the bottom 1-2” of the stem.
Remove any bottom leaves that may have wilted a bit.
Place in room temperature water.
Watch them bloom!
I did this last summer and had peonies for two months. It was so fun to have fresh bouquets throughout the summer.
