“Habitant”, French Canadian, it’s what they call split pea soup … love this going to do up a ham hock soon so I’m going to make split pea soup with the meat I take off that…. I cook my split peas in ham stock 😊 It’s soup season!!! (To clarify: Habitant literally = inhabitant, habitant soup = split pea soup).

I went to Sobey’s Grocery Store in Nova Scotia to get ham hocks, the young meat cutter at the meat counter didn’t know what a ham hock was. I couldn’t believe it. I will have to wait for local farmers to sell their meat later in the season.

Canada! Habitant soup was my fovourite split pea soup, right up until my parents moved us to California. When I know someone will head to Canada, I give them money to buy that and Harry Horne custard. Yummy.

Enjoyed your video,Soup looks very good. My husband loved pea soup. Unfortunately, I lost him in Jan 2021, and I have not canned since. Don't have family, and at 74 it isn't much fun canning for yourself.Just lost the incentive after losing him, but still have canned meats that I did before he passed. I did go on and buy some extra ForJar lids a short while ago just to have on hand in case I want to can later. You never know, so wanted to have them on hand. Thank you for telling us about them, or I would not have known. I don't often comment, but enjoy your channel very much.

I am also on my own and still love canning but in smaller loads. I am seriously considering investing in a Nesco electric pressure canner which does 4 quarts at a time or 5 pints. Watching lots of videos about it and, for me, it's looks like a great way to keep the pantry shelves full even for one. It saves everyday meal prep and if company comes, open another pint! Just something to think about besides the fact, you are not really alone. From my canning heart to yours! LOL!

@@danadiehl2711I've just done another load through my fairly new nesco. I decided small batch pressure canning was better than no batches and bought it last month. I love, love it!! I'm on a canning spree this week with some days off, so I'm helping out my future self with some jar meals/ meal starters. You'll love this thing!

@@danadiehl2711Please keep considering getting the Nesco/Carey electric canner. I bought one and have been canning everything! It's so easy and fun to just do small batches. I can take advantage of sale items, try new recipes, and share with friends without breaking the bank. I have been using it for 3 years now and definitely recommend it to all. Hope this helps.

This soup is so lovely! I'm rather odd about equal distribution of meat throughout the jars. Since I make the soup with ham hock broth I've experimented w/ putting the diced ham equally in each jar, then adding the soup to each jar.

That soup looks great! I think I would be more inclined to boil down a bone from a picnic ham and use some of that meat for the soup, too. But, that's just the way my Dad always did it when he made pea soup. It's been a very long time since I made pea soup, so I might just have to put that on my "to do" list for soups in the near future! Thanks for the memories, Leisa!

Leisa, I have been canning all day and watching Canuary videos waiting on the canner. Last batch was your split pea with ham soup. I had one jar that did not seal (my error, I'm sure) so I had some of it. OMG It was awesome!!! I tried someone else's bean with bacon but had to dump the broth and start over because the seasoning she used do not suit our tastes. But your cooking is the bomb! I need a bigger canner cause I just started canning and am using a Carey, which I love, but for this soup, I need to make a batch the size of yours!!! It was THAT good! Thank you! I think I will stick with your soup recipes to stock my pantry. You let the real flavor of the food shine through. This will be a staple. Next canning session, I will do 4 batches of this soup alone!!!! Oh, and you are not the only one who gets excited hearing those jars pop! LOL

Hi, Leisa! I'm a newcomer here and realize you might already have the answer to your question. After reading a number of comments, I didn't see that answer come up. Habitant Peas Soup is a French Canadian recipe which is made with yellow split peas and I'm fairly sure a good amount of garlic (probably powder or granulated). I'm reasonably certain this is the only difference from your split pea soup recipe. Your site is awesome!

Split peas are a bit like oatmeal or grits, kind of bland on their own. You have to put nice tasting items in there to make them taste wonderful. Like she did with potatoes and onions, ham, stock. Split pea soup is a bit like potato soup - a real comfort soup.

Leisa, I've had more lid failures than ever this year! I am restocking with ForJars lids BUT I'd like to know if there is a way to use my remaining lids (mostly wide-mouth) that is more likely to be successful. For example, do you think recipes with shorter processing times, or steam canning versus pressure canning? It's a lot of lids to save just for vacuum sealing my dry goods so I'd like to use them if I can. I'm so glad you're back! Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Ironic! I got very brave this morning and took out my Christmas ham bones and basically made a huge stock pot full of split pea soup and basically along the lines from the ball canning book like yours. I just got mine out of the canner and they look different than I had expected, so of course I am hoping I didn't take too many liberties in how I canned it. That is why I got on here to Google it...of course u saved the day for me. U veered off the recipe about as much as I did. I soaked the peas last night and used ham bones...and used bay leaves and all spice. There is about 1/3 of liquid on top, bottom is the peas and veggies. Please warn me or reprimand me if I crossed the line 😁👍👍

Thank you for your video. Sorry to hear you've been under the weather. Feel MUCH better soon eh? I love the way you cook. "THERE!" you say as the onions get tossed. Oh, oh, I canned the Ham. All the time, ... I just treat it as a processed meat and add liquid to the jar of cut up Ham along with a tsp of Onion Soup mix. It hasn't killed me yet. It's the Ham bone I use to make my split pea soup. I'll leave lots of meat on the bone and simmer it for a couple of days with onions, carrots and some celery, if I have it. BTW, it's now a terrible time finding Split Peas around these parts. I haven't seen them in stock for months and the dried bean section is shrinking every month. It's freaking crazy. I thought I found Yellow Split Peas in the International section of the store so I grabbed a couple of big bags and read on the label when I got home I had bought Split Yellow Chick Peas, .. lol, .. I bet they'll work just as good too. Back to the soup. After fishing out the fallen apart bones, I'll strain the stock for lumps of meat and whatnot, (don't you love that meaty whatnot?) and set it somewhere cool to harden any fat for easy removal. After sanctifying the soup stock in such a manner I desecrate it by adding more water and the Split Yellow Peas, more onion, and salt and pepper to taste, to be cooked for an hour or more making sure to add lots of meat and whatnot. Only time can tell with a good soup. When I believe the Peas are soft enough I jar the crap up and pressure can it for the time it takes to process the meat with 10 lbs pressure here at sea level. I couldn't believe how thick it got. I have to add a pint of water to a pint of soup when I open it in order to turn it back into soupy soup. Sum good too. BTW, I'm not "sold" on those ForJar lids "yet" just because they use a food grade silicone. As far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as food grade poison. I guess I've worked with too much silicone around water tanks on boats and understand how easy it leeches into water to ever believe it could be safe. We never allowed silicone to come into contact with the drinking water. Waste water? no problem, ... but never potable water. If they used a natural rubber like the original old time lids were made with, I'd be impressed. Pass that on to the Boss of "ForJars". AND! Remember, pain is your bodies way of telling you to stop doing what you're doing. Are you listening? Now I'm not one to tell anyone "not to push it", .. so I won't. Be good, be safe, .. and have a great one!
@carfvallrightsreservedwith6649
Don't know why the title mentioned canning with a specific brand of lid. Canning is canning. Lids are lids, only difference is in price. Must be some promotional compensation in there somewhere. Not knocking, just stating. Love your channel. Probably the best knowledge available right here.

Leisa it just occurred to me (and my lightening-fast mind) to see why the name 'Habitant Soup' after that recipe name. I've wondered for years, haha. Turns out Habitant was a soup brand from 1918 on so I'm guessing that split pea soup must have been nicknamed Habitant due to that association. It is time for me to make another batch of this but I'll do half-pint jars, hubby didn't care for it because the peas came out too soft for his liking. Who likes Al Dente pea soup? Apparently, only him. Isn't this recipe mind boggling with the density that comes out of the canner? And they say we can't safely can pumpkin butter?! Oh well, I understand. But honestly...their recipe produces 'pea sludge' in the jars yet perfectly safe, yay! I just can't believe you were canning so soon after major surgery. ::Not Worthy!:: Now would you grab your knitting and settle into a recliner for Pete's Sake?! Love you!

They were the only kind of canned pea soup that my parents would occasionally buy because it was OK, but it was also very expensive. Usually, my Dad would just make pea soup from scratch with the bone left over from a ham we had from the day before. It was definitely much better than Habitant in the can! ;)

Is there anything wrong with replacing a part of the carrots with celery?

Hi Leisa. Happy New Years!! I'm new to your channel and loving it. I was wondering what you do with the jars that are waiting to go into the canner when your first batch is processing. Do you keep them on the counter? I want to make this but I will run into the same problem and don't want to mess it up. I also want to thank you for mentioning using the ham bone. I was wondering that when I first started watching this video. I have had a ham bone in the freezer waiting for me to make this soup and now that it's New Years Eve I will have a 2nd ham bone to replace the first one.... Or I just might have to keep canning the soup. I hope you are well and have a blessed holiday

I use chix stock all the time- especially when I don't have any ham to add to it. As a matter of fact, I prefer my split pea soup "smooth" and not chunky. Another tip to make it taste great is to add a pat or two of butter when you heat it up and serve it. Yum!

I’ve dehydrated huge amount of leeks. In Ireland potato’s are compulsory (😂) So thick potato and leek soup is my comfort food If I had a huge amount of jars I would do this however the jars are extremely expensive here, so I only use them for meat.

Omg I LOVE leek potato soup, just made my first pot, I’m going to plant a TON of leeks next year they’re so under appreciated!! ❤ (I’m in western ny state USA, it gets too cold in winter here for them to survive but we can grow them into October…)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets distracted and lets their pots boil over. I have a really nice old hot plate from the 1930's that must have not been used much, as the ceramic part of the heating element looked nice and white and new. Of course my pan boiled over, and the nice white ceramic is not dark gray and burned looking. Oh well. I liked your recipe. You didn't salt and pepper this or put in any garlic? No other herbs? No chicken or ham broth instead of water? Ok you addressed the salt and pepper part.

Good morning, thank you for sharing. I recently canned pea soup. It thickened up after letting them seal, I was worried about over cooking it with my processing times at 90 min 15#. I'm not sure if you remember me, you gave me such an encouragement i canned 7 qtr of water when I first purchased my presto canner. I come so far since then. I canned chili beans, ground beef, mutton stew corn, raw mix vegetable -carrots, celery, onions, green n red bell peppers and apple filling, roasted NM Hatch green chili, garlic onion red potatoes. And water bath can salsa, diced n whole tomatoes, apple, pears, peaches. I continue to have trouble with my tightening tenchen on my lids going into my canner. Usually have some siphoning issue on some of my finish products however my lids seal. But usually the liquid content is less than when I stared with. Because siphoning occurring I let my canner sit longer to depressurize more and do the same with my water bath canner as well. In addition, I'm always in need of canning lids both small and wide mouth. Thank you for sharing, you have helped me out with improving home economics skills to better my family life. Take care and prayers for your recovery. I too am going through cancer treatment and recovery at this time. God bless. rhaleyduBoise

Habitant Pea Soup is made by Campbells. It used to be made in Canada in Quebec but has now moved to America. When they moved they changed the recipe and it is much thinner now and not as tasty. Unfortunately I don't buy it anymore. It used to be my family's favourite but not now. When I make this soup myself I use the yellow split peas. I may try this way as we just cooked a large ham and I usually make soup and I also use the water that the ham is cooked in to cook navy beans to use as a side dish.
