Welcome to SuttonsDaze where we are all about pantry preparedness. I believe that a well-stocked pantry is the best insurance money can buy. I focus on safe and approved canning, whether it is pressure canning, water bath canning, or steam canning. I don't believe in playing Russian roulette with my family or yours so I am here to teach you safe canning methods and proper storage techniques.
Building a long-term, short-term, and working pantry is a process and we're here to help you navigate, set realistic goals, and know what to do with it and how to use it. A good pantry is not a "set it and forget it" program. It is constantly evolving, just like you. But don't worry! You've got this! And we're here to help you succeed in building this safety net for you and your family.

Kroger has ground beef right now, buy 2, get 1 free. It's not the leanest, but I did a test a couple months ago, fried both 85/15 and 73/27 and there was only a 1.5 ounce difference per pound. So if I buy 10 lbs and get 5 pounds free, that's $2.39/lb. - a savings I can't pass up for minimal loss to the fat content. I'll just drain off most of it and add some hot beef broth to the jars. We don't mind the texture. Like you said, "It's MEAT".
Drinking from plastic bottles can cause cancer people should only be drinking from plastic bottles in emergencies investing in a filtration system is way better not trying to sound like a smart ars I promise but there is research backing my claim no one talks about it because it’s not profitable. Prepping is exhausting but I agree it is very much necessary. 2020 taught us this the hard way.
Tonight we are having sweet and sour pork. Everything I need is in my pantry: Ugly Pork, frozen stir fry vegetables, rice, and everything for the sauce! It will take me 20 minutes to put together! Thank you, Leisa for teaching me how to make Ugly Meats! 😁😁😁😁
I watched this video a week or so ago. My garlic was an experiment this year. It wasn't planted early enough. The bulbs are about the size of peas. I cut the scapes today. All are small. But, to be clear, it's okay to use all the green stems that were turning brown on the tips? I left the bulbs in the dirt in hopes they will come back next season.
You can make your own liquid hand soap, the ratio is 1 ounce of liquid soap to 4 ounces of water. I make big batches and store them in a large plastic bottles for future usage. I like the foam pump dispensers.
When Covid hit, I made my own hand sanitizer, because there was none in the store. I went to my "rag bag", cut up squares of cotton, put the squares in an old tupperware container (with a good fitting lid) and poured rubbing alcohol over the squares!!! Every time we went out I put a few in a small plastic baggie and we used that to clean our hands. So easy and cheaper!!!
I encourage folks with freeze dryers to learn "seed saver freeze drying" to make your own personal seed vaults for long-term storage. There are specific rules that apply, so learn before you freeze dry your seeds. If you are like us, we seed save to create landrace vegetables and fruit that have been grown from the same parent strain, over several generations, to make the vegetable/fruit offspring of the very highest quality and disease/drought/heat/cold resistance unique to our specific geographic microclimate. So you can begin creating your own personal "Survival seed vaults" unique to your specific locations.
I'd add that in addition to stocking water, we make certain to SECURE our access to 3 water sources that WE CONTROL. Stocked water only lasts so long. Having a filtration system is essential but FIRST we make sure that we CONTROL MULTIPLE WATER SOURCES... REDUNDANCY! We have to have something to filter😉
Not home canning yet, still gathering tools, learning gardening and permaculture. Mostly off-grid now. My Nana taught me about being frugal, canning, off-grid living and depression era foods. I think I am doing ok but I'm pretty beat up from my younger days so I'm slow moving most days. Still have to tend the critters etc. every day outside. Lots of native medicinal and edible herbs out back. Thanks for your hard work and Blessings to all.
I just sent my husband to the basement pantry for my last jug of oatmeal dated 2022 because I said I’d make him cookies. He said, where’s all the rest of the oatmeal from 2022. And there’s only one from 2023. I said, “See… that’s how you rotate a pantry. Time to restock.” Target has really good distilled bottles for their water. I dry the out well and use them for dry goods with an oxygen absorber. My husband asked, “You mean, you really use this stuff.” 🙄🙄 “No, dude, I rotate it.” Of course, I have several 5- gallon buckets of oats in Mylar…. Just sayin. 😎
I grew up with a garden and well-stocked pantry, but nothing like I’ve created since the Vid. My mother weathered the seventies price-freeze, a job loss/change, and the 1978 blizzard. We even threw a big neighborhood party during the ‘78 blizzard. We made a big pot of soup and the neighbors were supposed to “bring something.” We were surprised that the “somethings” were all bottles of alcohol! Our entire kitchen table was covered in half and full bottles of alcohol! My brother and I were in college-our dreams of being snowbound were answered, as we sneaked several full bottles to our bedrooms!
Thank you Leisa, for sharing this information and reminding All of us that now is not the time to be complacent. Have a great weekend and stay safe. Also have you done a video on how to make your chocolate banana bread? My son would love it.
I just signed up for your newsletter! Thank you so much for your wealth of knowledge - I know I still have a lot of work to do, but I am so encouraged! Have a safe and happy Sunday! ❤
I know most people already think of expiration dates on food, but also check over the counter meds as well; if you’re needing longer shelf life. I just waited until I found each item with at least 18 months before expiration before buying that particular item.
Read the back of labels lot of great value contain bioengineered food ingredients. corn is made in Thailand and it tells you about birth effects and everything else
I vacuumed sealed my cornmeal but it doesn't stay sealed. I can't figure it out. It's sealed for a few weeks and then I hear the lid pop and it unseals itself. I have tried different jars too.
I thought I was subscribed but had to resubscribe today. Now there's a join button after that I don't remember last time. What is that? I wanted to thank you for the white space in this video, specifically the things you did not say but implied. You're also zone 5, right? Are you going to try a winter garden this year, Leisa?
