Then some people will say “that is so expensive” because they weren’t the ones who sat for hours doing something

That is true. Some people have no idea how much time and expertise goes into making toys. But thank goodness some people really do! 🐰🐰🐰

Then you break down the cost of materials and how many hours it took and you tell them: if I did this as a full time job I would be making $6 an hour 😂

You don't tell them anything. If they don't like the price. They need to move on. Everyone does not end up with the same finished product. When people do price way low, it hurts other sellers.

I always find myself caught off guard when people ask how long a project took. I'm like you and crochet while watching TV with my SO, put it down and pick it up. Sometimes I'll set a project down for a few days to a week. No idea of the time.

A few times I have written down exactly (give or take) how long a project took....and I realized that I could not prize a project by the hour. People have said that I should open a shop but that would take out the joy of creating what ever I want to do. Admire that you do all this work and share it, hope you make a good income from all of it! You are so worth it :-) I will surely watch more of your videos (from Sweden ) :) Bless you!

I'm in highschool and me and my friend are planning to start selling amigurumi, crochet pieces, handmade earrings and some other craft products to raise some money for us to buy some cool yarns we're been wanting to try out, art and sewing materials, painting supplies, etc, but mainly so that we can support our cosplay projects, and your video helped me so much, i used to sell baked goods for friends and family so i'm already kinda familiar with pricing products but when it came to amigurumi or crochet pieces i was so lost, especially with the time thing since i can never really keep track of the time it takes me to actually finish a project, i'm so thankful i found this video, even if it's old it's so well explained and easy to understand it really helped me a lot (My english is not the best so i'm sorry for any mistakes 😅) kisses from brasil ♥️

Thank you from Australia! I recently started crocheting some toys (with a super long list of projects I still want to try) and while I’m not exactly interested in selling any of the ones I’ve currently made since they’ve mainly been gifts to friends and family, I’ve been thinking about possibly selling a few things. (Some extra and possibly too extensive details are to follow) My main opportunity at the moment would be with this day at school called market day that allows people who take a particular class called running a business to sell things in small groups which I was thinking would be really fun to sell some small crocheted toys. My main problem at the moment however is trying to find the time to actually crochet them amongst large amounts of other hw and also what price I could sell them at because I feel like if I sold them at a higher price considering all of these things, no one would want to buy it (and also probably wouldn’t be able to since they would need to have brought enough money on that singular day in cash). But as another thought I just had while writing this, selling something even just for $5 would give me more money than just continuing making toys for free Anyway that paragraph got a lot longer than intended, so if anyone is still reading this have a good day/night!

I have in the last year made some very big projects and had no idea what to charge. Luckily I was making them for a friend and she knew LOL I made a dog and a cat for her grand niece and nephew and they were both 3ft tall LOL I also just finished a hippocampus for her daughter after six months fighting with it ROFL A lot of people don't understand what you go thru sometimes. But you will find that there is a trend right now for hand made items and those who want them are willing to pay for what you do. Thanks for this video it is really nice for using and reminding yourself that you are a craftsman not just a person who can knit or corchet.

This is the advice I’ve been searching for! Some of the “formulas” people use to price their toys are crazy! I like the base price for difficulty level. Awesome idea with the kitchen scales, I might have to do that myself! My formula is a little more complex, but it feels right for me. I do 1 cent per stitch (unless it's a bulky/expensive yarn, then it's 2 cents per stich) plus a flat $1 per pair of eyes, plus a very rough estimate of materials. That way it pays for both materials and the time spent on each project without actually using time itself, if that makes sense.

Thanks for the Hawaii shout out! 😄🌺🌴 It's difficult to price amigurumi for sale in the islands, the shipping cost for your product can be higher and supplies (like yarn, hooks, packaging, etc...) are usually shipped into the islands from the mainland, which puts the purchase price up. Many times, local craft stores are out of stock for several weeks! Even ordering supplies online can get expensive with shipping. Although it's slightly more expensive, it's worth every penny to get to live here in the islands! 😄🌴🌺

I enjoyed this video a lot. You give very good advice. I have sold a lot of hand made items in craft shows. I made some money and it was fun, but now I am fortunate that I only make what I want to give away and I do keep a few things for myself. I got burned out on selling. It wasn't fun anymore for me. But hey I'm 69 so I guess it is time to retire :) :) Love your videos Elise. I always enjoy seeing what you are up to.

Your approach is SO different from mine - that is why the world is such a fascinating place!! Great tip about weighing the yarn - I never thought of that. Excellent idea! Keeping track of hours can be a real challenge. Often I'll make a toy a few times & track the time. Each day has differences. I put a Post it note on the page or pattern and keep a running tally: 15 minutes for a leg, 27 minutes for the head, 20 minutes for the embroidery. Once I have a few toys, I list the time(s) in my creator's journal. Your method of "easy, intermediate or difficult" would probably resonate with a lot of creatives who don't want to keep detailed records. The bottom line is - if we're having fun creating and someone is willing to pay a reasonable amount for it - it's a win win!!! I enjoy these hours spent with you, Elise. May you and all those whom you love be healthy, safe and whole. Hugs!!
@EliseRoseCrochet
@EliseRoseCrochet 3 года назад
Thank you so much, Violet! Yes, it's great that we can find what method works best for us. Most handmade formulas only take into account small projects that take an hour or two at most. That doesn't work for us amigurumi lovers! Lol! I would actually love to know how long it actually takes me to make a toy, but my flighty brain always forgets to record it! Lol! 😂😂😂

Great idea to include shipping in the price, postage in UK is getting very expensive (along with everything else) and it always comes as a shock when it gets added at the last minute, so much better,psychologically to include it at the beginning.

Thank you for your videos, especially this one about pricing! I find that attempting to use hours to price things is very deceptive, for the reasons that you brought up. Your suggestion to group things into easy/medium/advanced with flat rates for each is a much better system than saying "I want to pay myself $x per hour, and I have to time myself to get the exact amount". Timing yourself, I find, takes a lot of the fun out of making- it feels a lot less like a labor of love and more like a... job. A minimum wage job, at that, because you're stressing so much over exact hours and the freaking pennies you're going to get. It's also okay to price your projects in order to control the amount of customers you're getting. I'm so glad you mentioned that! I'm a little worried about getting into selling handmade stuff and feeling like I have to take every single order, especially if my prices are set too low and the amount of customers is overwhelming. Once again, thank you for your videos! They're all wonderful, and you have a lot of excellent wisdom to share with us!

Thank you very much for this video. It's very reassuring to hear this method of calculation. I often see other people showing formulas based on hourly rates and then when they show what they can do in 1 hour it shocks me. I clearly can't do the same thing in such a short time, I'm going to take 3 times as long. Nobody's going to buy a small (fairly simple) stuffed animal for $50+. I was under the impression that I was obliged to do these formulas, so thank you for proving that this isn't necessarily the case.

Hi Elise! Thank you for this video! I’m about to jump in at my first farmers market table in my town. It’s a weekly market and there food vendors, soap, coffee, flowers, beeswax candles… very small town in central NC. This was very helpful. I also add the price of shipping into my total price. At the moment I don't offer international purchasing though. I never thought I would sell any of my amigurami creations, but then I did and I started to realize I had to keep track. I decided to time myself and have a per hour price which is the minimum wage in the state I live in. So far it's working just fine. My issue now is just scaling down... The first time I set out to make something new like a teddy bear or a dog or a turtle, it ends up being a lot bigger than I originally from. I would like to scale down so I can lower the price and offer varying sizes of things I make. Thank you for your help.

11:58 so I guess the difficulty level makes sense. Like I think labor is the most important but I def understand how weird or difficult it would be to keep track of that. There is also the added … difficulty?? Of the fact that most people aren’t paid fairly for THEIR labor so it would be difficult for the average person to buy something where someone was paid for their labor fairly. It’s a weird balance to keep where you want to be paid as close to a living wage as possible but you def don’t want to price out the average person who’s gonna be more likely to be your main customer base

I've been crocheting for almost 3 years but I am still slow. It takes me like 10 hours sometimes to make only one item :( I keep being told i'll get faster the more I keep doing it but I haven't really seen any improvement. If I were to charge minimum wage for 10 hours the item would be $150

OMG I learned a lot from this video however I had to watch it several times to really let what you said sink in. Not because you were not clear in your explanation, but because I simply could NOT take my eyes/attention away from the gray bunny on the table behind your left shoulder. I love it. Is there a pattern, if so where can I find/ purchase it? My husband has been trying to explain this to me for years in our film prop shop and I have never been able to grasp it, being in the starving artist category. I simply do not know what to charge for my hand made art pieces. He is laughing and telling me to listen to everything you say. He really likes this video as well, it's very informative. Thank you.

One question I am not a confident knitter, I prefer crocheting. Does this pattern come in crochet? I have made some amigurumi stuffed animal toys. I am very fond of the Purrmaid by Hookedbyrobin. Her video is where I found your RU-vid channel, one of yours popped up as a suggestion. And I a so glad I followed it to you. I do know how to knit one pearl two. However I have not become proficient in reading patterns.

everything in this video is exactly me right now lol. I have a craft show coming up, and I know what prices to use but on top of having already made 37 aumigurumi, people are still asking for orders lol, I keep telling them wait till the show and see what I have there. I definitely price too low and some people tell me that, so when they buy from me they give me more then what I tell them, witch is really nice. I mean of course raising prices would be the better way to go, I do work hard on them, but I am just passing time watching Tv.the way the economy is going, prices are ridiculous for housing, groceries and gas, so yes I’d like more money, but I want to cut people a break and just stay at my normal prices. At least for now that’s were I feel like its were I’m at. To be honest when I got to craft shows I look for the deals or the lowest price on the table, as a shopper and someone who crochets its hard both ways to pay, and then create and sell. Just all my opinions. I really love your videos, and its so great having a lot of things to relate to.
