So many people are charging too low for their work. They don’t know how to charge higher. Some people believe they should get paid more because other designers get paid more. But how do you fairly charge someone more for the same service?
Position yourself as an expert
Your portfolio and brand need to be showing how, and why you're an expert.
Large paying clients want professionals to work on their brands. They don't want novices.
Show as much "profession" on your portfolio and social media as you can.
Increase your skillset
Font design
Hand Lettering
Web design
Brand strategy
Gain Trust
Trust is one of the biggest aspects to being paid more. If they don't trust you they won't work with you.
To gain trust you need to show who you've worked with, and lay out expectations on both sides.
Show yourself on social media, and be transparent about your design process through social media.
Meet with your client ahead of the project to discuss milestones and goals you both would like to achieve.
Rehearse negotiations
Negotiation is an art. You need to be willing to negotiate what you'll provide a client for the cost.
Negotiations are a great time to show your client your value and what you do.
"whilst other designers just provide you with a logo, I want to meet and strategise what the brand should be"
Add value
The value is you. They're not buying just into your logo product, they buying into your service.
Cater to a specific industry
Concept presentations
Brand strategy consultations with the client
Know what your clients want and need
It's strange, but the more you charge, the more value you have.
Show you expert understanding
Through your portfolio and social media and résumé
Through a presentation of other work you've given to clients.
Write case studies about what you've worked on.
Say no to low paying projects
You can only get paid what you accept. Don't accept low paid projects.
Instead, look to negotiate with the clients.Instagram: / willpat

Free Twix you say... HIT ME UP! This video is full of so many gems, you spoke about value a lot, and this certainly brings so much value to designers! No stone left unturned with this one, which I feel a lot of other videos covering pricing miss the mark on. Brilliant stuff Will.

Hello Will, hope you're doing well. I'm doing mostly collages artworks that I publish on Instagram and sometimes vector illustrations and logo/branding projects and I'm in the position of learning 3D and do animation as well. If you look at my projects, there's a certain professionalism in it but I still get people DM saying that they love my work, that want a cover for their albums (EP or LP) or songs and I offer a lot of work (display the cover in mockups, detailed research, etc.) and when they receive the progression/drafts or I say to them the price/rate - they go on to claim I am the worst designer/artist and that I demand too much money. What would be your advices for an artist like me who's more focused on collages? Thanks in advance!

@@willpatersondesign perfect! It's just that sometimes, even by explaining the process, they tell you: "Be creative, do what you want, you have full liberty". Arriving into showing them the drafts/propositions, they go on a rant that: "No that's not what we wanted, we wanted this and that. You know what, forget it and you cost too much anyway" I'll keep those advices in check and use them

Hey Will, I love your Videos and there's just a little question that I have. You have such a big field of skills, but what did you study? And how does studying, for example graphic-design, affect the "customers" view on your work? PS: It would be great if you could make a video about useful degree courses at universities for people who want to become designers.

Think of how long it normally takes for a project, then work out your hourly rate - then add a certain amount on top. That's a good way to start.

@@willpatersondesign I put £25 per edited minute down for the position. I was told that was a bit low. But honestly that sounds pretty good to me
@NerdJam
@NerdJam 3 года назад
@@AlexGreat321 Hi Alex, I run a media production company, and just happen to be Will's editor so I can speak a bit into this! Charging by edited minute is a good way to go, but of course consider complexity - are you creating content, or just editing what you are given. Is it just straight cuts, or lots of extras as well? I prefer to think of how long it will take me to do. So for editing for most clients, I have a set charge for a full day's edit (5 - 8hrs work), and then will occasionally charge a half day (that is really about 60%) for shorter, simpler projects. Of course, this is up for negotiation. For example, editing one of Will's videos takes me less time than a new client, because I know his style and have a bunch of assets and templates ready to go, plus I know I'm going to be getting work every week. And it helps Will to know how much each video is going to cost, so we have some set fees in place. Sometimes that works in my favour for simpler videos, sometimes I spend hours animating different title screens for each section of a video (ahem) and it works in Will's favour, but we all know where we stand. So, yeah, if you're charging by project, have fixed rates in place, but if you're charging by time, I'd consider more the time that you will put in, rather than the runtime of the finished product. An "edited minute" of motion graphics is an entirely different workload than an "edited minute" of an interview, for example. Let me know if you wanna chat more, always nice to see a fellow video nerd in Will's comments!
@AlexGreat321
@AlexGreat321 3 года назад
@@NerdJam dude I'm down for chatting more. The job itself was just editing clips and audio together. They would give me the clips and audio and I'd just have to edit it together in a way they liked. I'll hear back start of next month hopefully. I've never actually timed myself with editing stuff together. The last few videos I did for myself I just did in my free time. But if I were to guess a ten minute video would take me a full working day. That would include me sourcing clips and adding watermarks etc though.
@NerdJam
@NerdJam 3 года назад
@@AlexGreat321 In time you'll get to know your workflow and how long things take you. I can pretty well estimate how long a video will be and how long it'll make me to edit just based on the raw footage Will gives me, before I've even opened Premiere. I'm no super expert or anything, but if you ever wanna chat video, Discord is probably the best way to talk. There's Will's server, (linked below) which is mostly designers, but they're good people ;) but you'll find me on there under NerdJam, feel free to DM me or chat publicly :) discord.gg/wNnXMBZNNj

Wait wait wait. You literally promote fiverr and you're here telling people that they're not charging enough for design work? Make your mind up. You can't support a platform that creates a horrible environment for designers and artists to earn a living and then make a video like this. It's contradictory.
@willpatersondesign
@willpatersondesign 3 года назад
I promoted designers on Fiverr because some of them had amazing work. I also encouraged them to increase their prices - which they have done substantially. There's no sides to this, if you truly understand pricing in design, the free market and why professional designer's who are successful (not just content creators with a platform) don't fear Fiverr - you'll also understand my take on it. If you're scared of a $5 design competitor: check your value and client experience - don't blame the market.
@ApocalypseKIDONE
@ApocalypseKIDONE 3 года назад
@@willpatersondesign You're right, there are a lot of incredible designers on there with amazing work who are selling themselves short. I guess because you have a following you have promoted them, which is great, but that doesn't change the fact that fiverr creates a breeding ground for competitively low pricing. Pricing which the average client (small business) then see as normal. And you've just said it yourself. Successful designers don't fear fiverr. But nobody starts off being successful and THAT is the issue. We know that good design should come with good budgets but a lot of the talented people creating work on fiverr are just starting out and aren't seeing those bigger more experienced clients who know the cost of good work, most of their work is coming from small businesses who then see a design on fiverr for next to nothing and then think, why should I pay more? Those small businesses are how younger designers get their foot in the door and start earning and they will never get the budgets they deserve if they see successful people in the industry, like yourself, promoting a platform that pays nothing. If will's using fiverr it must be a good place to sell my work, these prices must be fair. So they make work for less than they deserve, clients see the quality for that price and it continues. I like your videos and your channel dude, you have a lot of great videos. The advice in this very video is great and right on the money. But I honestly feel like the fiverr ones come with views in mind first and advice for young designers second. In the design industry your competitors success is your success. You wan't the designer next to you to get a fair wage because then when it comes around to you, you will get one too.
