How to process amadou, from the horses hoof fungus.
The fommes fomentarius is a specious of bracket fungus that grows on both beech and birch here in the UK. We have used it for thousands of years for holding and transporting embers of a fire and for fire lighting.
In this video I show you how to separate the middle trama layer from the cuticle layer (outside surface layer) and the sporing tubes. We then boil until fluffy and dry out.
Enjoy this quick demonstration of how to process amadou from the horses hoof fungus and a quick flint and steel fire too.

Firstly, didn't realise this favoured the silver birch tree, secondly, we had no idea extracting the Amadou was such a laborious process😱. Really fascinating video Rob, some absolutely stunning specimens you have been sent there. Thanks for enlightening us! Wishing you and yours a very merry christmas and a fantastic 2023, all the best, Shell and Pete☃️🎄👊👍

My friend, you have missed the most important steps. After boiling, you gently beat, WHILE WET. You then stretch in different directions, and zzzzzzszzzz! It will suddenly give way in one or two directions, getting much, much thinner, wider, and more fibrous. Dry, and you are there. No “fluffing” necessary. . Thick, un-ppulled amadou is hard to light.
@storbunlimitedbushcraft6996
Thanks. This was a very quick example I'll cover the full process in another longer video maybe one day.

Lots of channels misuse the word bushcraft. This is one of the few that really is bushcraft . Thanks and keep it up!

NIce video - you were having some trouble getting stone on stone spark. In our area we have lots of fools gold - iron pyrite. When struck against quartz it will produce a briliant spark which is the molten iron part of the pyrite coming off. Burns very hot and lights the edge of the amadou as well as a steel.

BeaverBushcraft Amadou is magnificent, I buy it on a regular basis as I cannot get Amadou here in Australia. They process and treat their amadou with potassium nitrate, which allows for more precise and better quality control. Nice traditional processing of amadou mate.

Used to use amadou patches to dry out saturated dry flies when out fishing. Had no idea at all where it came from. Cheers for a really informative video. New sub.
