Hello, I wanted to post my experience because a lot of people are coming down on you. So, this was my experience changing my BCM on my 2011 Chevy Impala. I purchased a used BCM, part number was correct. Took my lower dash apart and unplugged the 7 couplers that jack into the BCM. Then I placed the car key in the ignition and turned it on. Then I hot swapped the BCM by plugging in the couplers. As I did the lights on the dash came on. Then after all the couplers were plugged in, I started my car and as it ran all the lights on the dash came on, such as traction control, ABS, Stability Track error and so fourth. As the car ran, the lights turned off. I kept the car running for about 12 minutes. Turned it off because one of my concerns was the anti theft system. Everything worked fine, I checked it with my Tech 2 program, anti theft system was working, my FOB to open/lock doors, pop trunk, and auto start vehicle worked. The mileage carried over from the original mileage. Drove the vehicle for 50+ miles if any learning was needed. It actually worked, I have to say I was surprised. That was my experience, thank you for coming up with the idea.
@@petercosta3884 did you turn on the car with the original bcm still connected? Then did you leave the car running while you hot swapped over to the used junkyard bcm? When did you disconnect the original bcm?
@@petercosta3884 “hot swapped” would imply that the original was also disconnected in the same position, but that’s not what you describe. That’s just hot insertion. Did you mean to describe a hot swap?
Thanks for the video, I totaled my 02 in an accident and bought another one for cheap with a bad bcm. I'm also scraping for money so this video saved me the headache of going to the dealer.
I am an ASE certified mechanic. You are absolutely wrong. You didnt program a thing. You got a used BCM that was already programmed. Thats why the mileage is different. Thats the mileage of the car it came out of. NEW BCM comes from the factory WITH NO SOFTWARE AND MUST BE PROGRAMMED BY A CANBUS DUAL BAND PROGRAMMER. PLEASE STOP SPREADING BAD INFO CAUSE YOU KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. BTW CHANGING ANY ELECTRICAL COMPONENT WHILE THE BATTERY IS CONNECTED LET ALONE RUNNING... IS DANGEROUS AND CAN CAUSE MAJOR COMPONENT DAMAGE.
Mr. Harris Thank you for your thoughtfulness in providing a vido BCM and programming. As with many people who use this media, saving money on their car repairs to put food on the table is why I appreciate your knowledge and service so much. KEEP ON VIDEOING. Be Blessed.
Bro, we don't need to see the engine or hear you talk about pointless things not pertaining to the topic of the video just show the BCM or what you think you know LOL
Thank you Sir. I had been trying to find out how to program the BCM and doing it your way it worked great the lights on the dash came on when I started the car but they started going out as the car ran, It works great now Thank you again.
@@TheSleepler Dude, I have the same issue. I can't get a used BCM anywhere. Need a new one. But doesn't the BCM read from teh ECU and learn info? Or does it really need to be programmed?
Thank you sir for the wonderful info. You have saved me a huge headache .I wish more people in this world cared about helping others the way you Do. It would be a lot better place. Thank you., keep up the great work and God Bless .
This video was priceless and thumbs up to you for this information im also a mechanic now i know how to reprogram a bcm! Thanks for this vital information
You did not program that BCM. You simply transferred a used BCM to your vehicle. Your milage is incorrect and your vehicle security system locked up as a result. That used BCM has the restistance value learned from the vehicle it was removed from.
Everyone has the option of taking the risk to swap out a used bcm or replace it with a new one. It's your choice. If it work great. If not go get a new one simple as that. Thanks for the info the dealers are not going to share it. And some mechanics will not either. Hmm
I've got to change the BCM in my 2006 Pontiac Montana SV6. Thanks for telling me about turning the key on first. Also, thanks for pointing out the mileage change after swapping the BCM.
Thank you 🙏 works for my 2004 saturn vie !! The weell didn’t turn l did the same you said and work just fine again!!! It’s not complete 😊lm a woman and l did it!!!!! Thank so much
So leave the battery plugged up, and leave the key on (engine not running), remove the old BCM, install new BCM. Then start the vehicle. This is how it will program itself? Awesome!
@Alex Cosme a shop plugged a donor BCM into my 04 Colorado, and it flashed my 98K mileage to 240K on my instrument cluster😑. So now I have to remove my cluster to have it zeroed out, and it will flash back to the correct mileage that my new programmed BCM is set to. This stored cluster mileage MAY NOT always be a issue with all vehicles. But I'd make certain before ever using a donor BCM
I’m going to try this on an 03 Monte Carlo. I have a brand new bcm and I also have a donor bcm from a used car. Do you kno if I can use the brand new one or should I use the donor 1?
It is very helpful information specially when you live in tight life. Im talking about how we try to survive in Mexico, those repairs can reap you whole paycheck, awesome dude.
I got a 04 ion 2 kinda havin same problem. The ion is known for ignition switches goin out pass lock coming on says service vehicle on dash board.. what I just found out is it’s not just the ignition it’s the bcm. Which led me to your video. My local dealership is a joke I’m not about to even think of taking the car there haha. I think a tech 2 scanner read all old codes from bcm, swap it out, reprogram should resolve everything. But what you did does help, on the ion’s it’s the same way you disconnect your battery and whole vehicle starts doin crazy stuff. My mom has a Chevy Colorado did same thing as well after disconnecting the battery. GM hmmm. Thanks tho man I’ll keep this info in mind if I’m fact it’s my bcm I haven’t pin pointed it yet.
Man I'm so glad I found your video I've been holding on to a bcm from a exact trick like mine been nervous about just swapping it out you just saved me a headache I would have had...going to do this in the morning....and your right I try to help people I see in need of help I'll still pull over to help someone on the roadside and don't ever ask for anything in return...thanks you
Thank you Sir you video help me out Your idea worked for me my dash board lights up like a Christmas tree right now but it worked and got me rolling again..Thank you
FROM A LICENCED REGISTERED MECHANIC AND GENERAL MOTORS ABOUT THE BCM "Remove and install a BCM body control module All repair procedures tell you to disconnect the battery cables first. Well, this time they mean it. NEVER disconnect or connect a BCM body control module with the battery cables connected. You can damage other electronic components connected to the sensitive data bus and you can even blow out the new parts. The hardest part of the job, aside from finding it, is figuring out how to remove the electrical connector locking latches. Once you figure that out, just remove the connectors and remove the BCM."
Thank you Tim Clarey, your post was extremely helpful except we seen your post after we watched & did what the video said (but would like to thank him for just being kind & trying to help people out he will be blessed). So did what video said, didnt work plus my security light came on & won't go out. Our problem from the beginning was our 2000 chevy S-10 WILL NOT START!! It's getting spark but no fuel, we have changed the fuel pump, fuel filter both brand new the pump IS working(you can hear it) so the fuel gets through the filter and that's it, stops there. Been working on this for a couple of months now we are completely frustrated at this point & can't keep putting $$ into thing's that aren't causing the problem were on social security so a very fixed income. Any help or thoughs that you can give would be greatly appreciated. P.S- the truck was running perfect then one day just wouldn't start. Thanks in advance, Angela
I was wondering about that Tim .. i read up a lot on doing this. most said unplug the batter first thing , i need to replace mine and trying to figure out how to do it . also wondering if it will start up after i change the BCM.. since it wont start now , so i can get it to the dealer with out towing it..
Tim question on buying a used BCM from Ebay that came out of a 2003 monte carlo. would that work if i just connected that in .. since its the same car it came out of as mine ? or does it still need to be reprogammed , not sure about the vin number or the miles reading would be affected , $40 is not a bad price if this would work , Thanks
on a chrysler minivan I think its easier to remove the engine as they hide the BCM behind the junction box below the steering columb. Then add insult to injury by putting unessesary bolts to attach it to theBACK if the Junction block. I was having two years of litghts that would quit at night, no horn, no brake lights, no instrument lights or instruments, no interior lights no wipers, no radio no windshield washers But it started up ok
What every you do, DO NOT spill the Ice Tea 😜 I was told if you get a bcm with same part number you don't need to reprogram to your vehicle? Thanks for sharing, good stuff.
This is ironic I run across this video. First, I have a BCM issue with my BMW 525i and it's needing replacing. Second, I have a son named Aaron Harris. He's an Aircraft Tech and I'm a retired Heavy Equipment Mechanic. I would like believe this would work on my wife's car but these cars have to many electronic modules (mess) and I have my doubts. Gotta do more research. Good job Sir.
Aaron thank you I am ordering a BCM for my car a 2007 Suzuki Grand Vitara , it looks like I need to turn on the key during the disconnecting of the cables to the old BCM and reconnecting of the cables to the new BCM. Without turning off the key after it's replaced, I turn on the ignition? Just reinforcing what you have taught me. I enjoyed your video thank you for sharing.
I think id rather wait a day for the system to reset the risk damaging other delicate electronics on the vehicle. there are sellers on ebay that sell remanufactured BCM's for 250 and they will reprogram your BCM for free if you give your VIN number, year make and model of your vehicle
I sent my BCM off to get repaired they kept the same info on it just fixed the problems all for a 100 bucks and when I got it back just plug and play everything worked
@@ryannoriega7945 you can find companies online where you can mail it off or you can find some local I did mines 4 years ago but what he's doing that's not programming it just happens to match that's why his is working
hello! I tottaly agree my husband and I were just saying that people aren't like they used to be . Like if you'd see someone broken down you'd stop and help . Not now days ,but anyway thank you for the video it helped us.
I'm trying to get factory cruise control I added to my 2000 SL2 working. I'm a Saturn Forum member and get so many answers that a Swap is all I needed to have the cruise enabled. Did the swap, and now "No Start !" I believe it's a security issue and I also believe I was told wrong that this procedure works just swapping the BCM that was from a Donor W/Cruise option. O.K., If all of you Genius's out there that put other peoples comments down, how is this done then ?! If a lot of You know about car's so much and how this works, how do You enable the Cruise after all the parts are connected ?! Let's see how many of You can give the correct advice. The Forum states "IT CAN BE DONE !" Let Me know, then. We'll see. Most Dealers said they can't enable it because of the age, or say there's no guarantee it'll work, You pay the $135 either way. Lol, I don't think so. We'll see which way is correct, here.
#1 this is great if you own a 2002 saturn Vue #2 You didn't "program" anything you just plugged the plugs into a different module #3 Whatever you did here didn't work... As a technician, i can happily say im glad you're not working on my car 😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧😧
Hey, That is not how to program the BCM. What you showed was how to get it to keep the theft deterrent and some other settings to remain in memory. These are called learns or relearns, not programming. Programming involves transferring the data from from the vehicle manufacturer site to the used module or transferring from one module to the other using an appropriate hardware devices and software. But your video non the less did show a method of how to swap a module, and keep your vehicle running without getting into key or theft system problems. At least it so appears on that particular vehicle. Definately worth trying and worth while. I am not sure but did your vehicle display the original mileage after or that from the used BCM ?
David Kellner firstly mileage is save on BCM . And then while you starting engine like these used BCM and turnoff , you can not restart by thieft detection. I am sure.
Anyone know what to do when your keyless entry stops working in an 03 gmc sierra?...yes i changed the key fob and actually bought new ones...but i cant get into the programming mode...if i have to have the bcm changed and reprogrammed, ill just live without
I had a retired police 2006 Impala. All I wanted was the dome light to come on when I open the door. I swapped the bcm with one I got from the junkyard. The dome light comes on when I opened the doors but now I have check engine light. The camshaft position sensor and no matter what I did it never went off. Including replacing sensor and erasing the code or even putting the original bcm back in. Also maybe you should have replaced the battery in your fob or reprogram it.
Matt-Matt ebrake does cause the light on the dash to come on that says brake to let you know one of 2 things. 1 your ebrake is on. 2. Your brake fluid is low
Thank you and also maybe somebody asked. My 2006 Cobalt. Has the ac controls with the plugs as well as the interior fuse box has the two plugs do I just do the ones plugged into my AC component? There are three separate plugs in that guy. But could see where I would possibly need to do the fuse box as well? Or just the three in the ac plugins? Sorry. But like you said. No money and so much work I've put into this car
Thanks Aaron! This video demonstrated a lot of VERY valuable info, like where the mileage is stored and how to swap BCM's without going to the dealer! Like you said they don't make BCM's anymore, so our only real option is salvage yards, anyone that thinks your video isn't helpful is nuts, this will save me at least $150 bucks, I really appreciate your posting this!
I found this place on line called auto parts warehouse i see a few they carry. i need to get one myself and was checking around $150 or so it says i have a 2003 Monte Carlo did you get your fixed Ken ?
Sure stuff still works but you changed the miles on your vehicle and probably unlearned crankshaft position if you do that you will never know the actual mileage it has
"Don't never unplug-take your battery cables off.... Sorry man, but you shouldn't be giving advice on something you know so little about. All you did was a module swap, reprogramming requires a J2534 pass-thru device, or dealer scan tool. Many vehicles that are CAN bus equipped this advice will brick several modules, leaving you with a vehicle that won't start, and needing many modules, that need actual programming.
I've heard enough... you record the cars when you're driving..... I believe everything you're saying from this point. .......you have passed my IQ litmus test
2003 envoy. I unplugged just how you said. Gauges never shut off. Plugged in the new one and still has the same miles. Wont start. Security light blinking
this guy is a dangerous clown giving out misleading and risky information and risking injury from an exploding airbag or wiping out the engine control module, maybe the transmission control module and other sensors all to save 150 bucks? what was the original problem? his automatic door locks didnt work? god forbid some innocent viewer listens to this and an airbag takes his face off
Jim halcom you are 100% correct sir! That guy shouldn't be making videos. He is endangering everyone who follows his bad advise to try to save a few bucks. Years ago I watched some air bag test videos and have since changed how I work on vehicles. I use a tool cart or magnetic tray under hood and never set things on the front fenders or radiator support to prevent dropping a tool and setting off a crash sensor. Also I will not move, test or disconnect any air bag connectors under the dash without consulting the repair manual to check the exact procedure on disconnecting that specific cars air bag system. I find so far the connectors are usually yellow and will have vibration locks on them. Those air bag videos show just how much damage air bags can do to people if they go off unexpectedly and your not fully sitting back in a driving position. Great comment. Thanks. Jpol.
Aaron do you think this would work in a 2009 Nissan Rogue as well? The keys are working intermittently right now but my mechanic just told me that the BCM was the reason they weren't working consistently and that I had to take it to the dealer which want half as much as the thing is worth to replace and reprogram which is crazy. I'd appreciate a reply and thanks for your time.
Put your original bcm back in, take your key fob apart. Clean the circuit board contacts with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. Replace the battery if you haven't done that. Most times that will fix the key fob.
Greg , what is a key fob ? what does it stand for .. i saw also on ebay you can buy these BCM that were in a car you have make sure you buy the right one for your same car.. would that just work without repraming you think ? since it was in the same monte carlo .. $40 they want for it 2003 Monte carlo BCM must of been pulled out of a junk car
Thank you Sir; I'll gonna work on my 97 honda crv; I 've issues with door lock ,and internal light as well cigarrete lighter, ran some test on electrical shorts, but i think is the BNC. You mention the used bnc you replaced with , show the milage of the original car. My car only has 174,000 miles i should get something less than 200,000 right ?, I like your opinion.
Thanks for the info on my BCM. As you described the problem it is exactly what is happening to my 2001 L300 Saturn. And thank you for how to replace it and reprogram it. However, did the used bcm still have the program from the previous vehicle? Thanks from Jim of Roseburg Oregon
Wonder if this would work on other GM BCMs. I've been looking for the location of my RCDLR on a 2002 Escalade, but no one will tell me where it is or if it too needs to be programed???
So turn the key to on position then swap the bcm and it's good to go? 2010 traverse won't even start because of the bcm going out and like most I can't afford $600 for a new one and to "flash" it. Really hope this works for me. Gonna order a used bcm from same yr/make/model and try this
Did you fix it? Have you looked up if your car has a way to reset the car anti theft lock/security light. ? If it has a step by step process then that might work. It worked for my car, since thats what needs to be synced. The ignition switch cannot communicate properly until it is reset, for my car it was a 30 minute process and a $30 part from the junkyard.
@@justchillin7274 no it didn't, I had to reprogram the key. Luckily my neighbors friend works for a repo company and they had the scan tool and let me use it. Took like 12 mins for it reprogram
My truck has like 330,000 mi on it with a fresh motor so it'd be nice to if it reset it to a lower mileage. I'd be cool if that anyhow save on insurance
I'm not seeing it. The mileage is incorrect with the new/used module and quite a few things are wrong including loss of communication with the key remote. Didn't seem like it programmed anything.
Great vid Aaron, money is tight , can anyone advise could I avoid having to reprogram a BCM in a card key start/stop button Renault ? So instead of having the ignition barrel I just put my card key in and all electrics turn on, then I just press brake and start button same time to start, I have 3 failing windows , just 1 of the back windows works from the drivers window module , but a parts dealer said cos only 1 window works from only the driver module switch, it may be the BCM that needs replacing rather than the drivers window module switch, otherwise the switch from the back window would work, any advice appreciated guys ?
I do appreciate you trying to help others that have no idea where to start, but you really need to have a finished conclusion in order to sell your fix. Otherwise, you just come off as another person trying to get views. Someone in here does unplug the battery and puts it right back in, and the problem is solved temporarily, but perhaps if they waited 24 hours it would have stayed fixed. Their solution had not reached a finished conclusion either. Funny how haters in here can be so rude, yet they don't have the answer or even a guess.
My 08 Vue's brake lights are staying on while key is out of ignition. It only shuts off when I pull the fuse for BCM VB3. I checked the brake pedal sensor (it's good), replaced the engine stop light fuse. Do I have to replace the BCM?
Ever think about the consequences of accidentally setting off the airbag? Plugging in the BCM while the battery is hooked up can destroy the Engine control module, and set off the airbag. its like turning off your PC without properly shutting it down. I called my dealer and they told me another airbag and horn switch was 1800 bucks. So I faithfully disonnect the negative side of the battery before doing this work. a broken face and arms if you get in the way of an airbag can run you much higher then 450 plus 150 for programming
The body control module has nothing to do with the srs system. The only way a deployment would happen is two of the three crash sensors went off. Air bag systems are robust.
OK, we get you jimbo. You don't like this guy. It's best, when you say nothing at all, around other people. Bye the way, your info is wrong, too. You obviously don't understand airbag systems.
God bless you for your help. I was wondering do you disconnect the battery terminals till the next day before or after the swap? 4 years later and I feel that it’s become worse out here. Fast food inflation has gone up to %70.
If you have a bad bcm, DO NOT take off your battery cables, or your car will not start back up. At 5:22. ONLY IF YOU HAVE A BAD BCM, if you disconnect the battery beforehand, you have to let the car sit overnight (to drain all the power from the cars computer) then in the morning reconnect and it will run. ONLY DO THAT if you have to change your battery (if you say, have a bad battery) to get your car to run WITH A BAD BCM.
