We all want to progress our riding skills whenever we go out, but it is easy to get into trouble when you try and push your comfort zone. Blake has some top tips to help you safely expand your comfort zones and improve your riding.

Speed: When you want to get faster on your local trails, its easy to think you just need to pin every section of trail and just try to hang on. But you will actually find yourself going faster by taking your time, and entering difficult sections a bit slower.
Jumping: It's always tempting to just send it on the biggest jump you can find. But that is just a great way to hurt yourself! Instead, slowly work your way up from small tabletops to larger jumps when you feel comfortable doing so.
Cornering: Line choice is absolutely crucial in cornering. If you take your time to choose the right lines you'll soon find yourself flying around corners without going out of your comfort zone.
Linking full sections of trail: If you put together all of these tips, you'll be linking up full technical sections of trail better than you ever have!

Definitely the best advice is to ride, ride, ride. Don't go out of your way to push hard, just ride & repeat. The more times you ride a section, the more familiar you become with the conditions. There's a fast descent section on a trail where I ride. When I first started riding it, it took me nearly 4 minutes to cover the section. My best time is now 52 seconds. I know I can still improve some more, so I keep riding it - trying different lines, braking zones, cornering speeds, etc.
@sixstanger00
@sixstanger00 5 лет назад
Update: My best time on that section is now 44 seconds. Still improving

Yes, old video revisited. I have been riding for 30 years on my rigid GT Karakorum K2. New drive and tires, but still ride with the boys on full suspension bikes and keep up for the most part. Recently found your channel and its helping me ride better and getting the most out of my bike, sadly newer better bike isn't in my future so I get the most out of what I have, and I'm 54 riding with young bucks 15 years younger than me. Cheers Blake, you make me want to ride more and more.

I made a move of nearly 4000km from eastern north america (fairly flat) to the pacific northwest.....my first ride here was intimidating to say the least, and I have found that spending maximum time in the natural knarly trails has really helped my confidence when riding wide ass groomed park trails, now I just need to go build a small jump and work up those nerves again, I used to be very confident with jumps when I was a kid (30 years ago) riding BMX.

Yep. Went to a jump park and let some guy tell me to just go for it. No previous biking experience and hit a 7ft step up with a 15ft gap. Needless to say the huge downhill run up siked me out because I felt like I was going too fast. But I came up short, re-fractured my wrist, and fractured my ankle from casing it. So. Lesson learned, start small. Don't let peer pressure affect your riding.

Hi Blake. I have a question for you. You recently tried clipless. Well I'm trying flats now but when I jump I get the feeling I can't control the bike in the air. This because my feet are lose on the pedals. I have some nice dmr vaults with fivetens so that's good but still I don't have the feeling I like to jump. Do you have any tips? Sell the vaults and go back to the mallet e of just ride more? With kind regards.

I just came back from a bank holiday day at Hadleigh Olympic Bike Park in Essex, and I *so* wish I'd watched this before going! Some of the sections were a bit sketchy and I quickly lost my confidence after I fell on a technical downhill section. There are loads of tight corners and berms to deal with too which I've never attempted before. They look simple enough and I've watched all the videos on how to tackle them, however my mindset was just so rubbish today so I just ended up doing blue and red routes, and avoiding most of the tight corners and techy trails. *Comfort is the enemy of progress,* they say. I also really lost my confidence after people kept going the wrong way down trails.... isn't it just the most annoying thing ever when you're sailing downhill on a single track, powered on pure adrenaline, and then some idiot comes full pelt towards you in the opposite direction?! 😡
