In this episode, we discuss how to extend the life of your Escrima training sticks. Wear and tear eventually happens on all rattan sticks. You can get a few more training session without having to purchase more sticks. All you need is a roll of electric tape. As your stick begins to splinter and crack, as long as the core is still intact, all you have to do is tape it up which will prolong the life of your sticks.

Electrical tape over time can create a gluey mess, and adds additional weight to the stick. Try hockey tape, you’ll be much happier.

Excellent. Thanks for that input. We've heard about using hockey tape and tennis tape as well.

Yes the hockey tape is great, and much more durable than the electric tape.

I would also add a commentary on choosing good quality sticks. There is such a thing as a low quality rattan stick that will fray easily.
@FMAPulse
@FMAPulse 4 года назад
Thanks for that idea. A friend of ours actually knows the different species of rattan. We'll probably do an episode on that in the future.

I have used packing tape (clear plastic). I find it still provides a tiny bit of the fun "whack" when the sticks strike rather than the soft thud of electrical or other similar tapes. Being clear it also preserves the visual presence of the rattan

We hear ya, we also love the smell of the burned rattan smell from the friction of stick on stick contact.

that I done with my escrima stick.I covered the stick with electrick. Based on my observation the stick add some additional weight and the tape served as protection to the stick. Tape also made the stick hard and increased its damage against its target.

The tape also makes it better to grip and hold. Which is good especially when your hand is slippery.

Was taught that if law enforcement questions you about why you have a weapon with tape around it, it looks like intent to harm. An untaped stick is seen as just a stick, not a weapon. But a stick with electrical tape is frowned upon some jurisdictions.

Hmm. Thanks for the info. I know back in the day old school gang members would tape up the end of baseball bats and would resemble a make shift mace.

Marinate sticks with cotton seed or coconut oil, rub into sticks, wipe down and then tape then in a circular movement so your both re rehabilitating the stick ans making them more effective !

We've heard of a similar process using Tung Oil and have it naturally air dry.

@@OFAS_COMBATAN Sir, i'm currently looking for a seller here in PH. Can't do super bulks. But only around 10 or more per order for now. I'm cool with LBC. Then maybe send my payment through BPI or metrobank, or whichever you prefer.

My question is , what kind of coating could be used, or what do they use when manufactured?
@FMAPulse
@FMAPulse 3 месяца назад
Depends on where you're getting it from. Some don't use any finish and only fire harden after shaping it. Some would use tung oil since it's more organic as opposed to varnish because of the harsh chemicals that can get into your skin while training.

@@FMAPulse Ratan Nuchaku for instance, there is but one 'major' supplier to all vendors. What do they use? If we knew this, which no one does, we could repair our splintering sticks, and or taper them, as no one gives them to us tapered, like the typical hard wood set.

Kinesiology tape works better.
@FMAPulse
@FMAPulse 4 года назад
Nice recommendation. Haven't heard anyone using kinesiology tape on their sticks.
@shellfaith8432
@shellfaith8432 4 года назад
@@FMAPulse My husband does. He also uses horse tape they wrap horses' ankles with. Kinesiology tape makes the stick very hard to splinter. In China boxers y MMA fighters have killed opponents by wrapping hands in kinesiology tape, making hands like stone. That's where my husband got idea to use it for his sticks. His students do it now as well since he started it y they spar hard without gloves or protection, aiming for wrist, hand, arm as if stick were a sword/bolo. If they make them drop weapon w/hard hit it means opponent dead unable to stop a follow up kill. By aiming for the wrists y arms, while using evasive footwork, they prevent over extension y any possibility of attempted disarm. They train to cut off the wrist or arm before making a kill strike. These are all military men, used to training for real combat, not sport, and not afraid of pain or minor injury. Kinesio Tape works best to reinforce stick. My husband, AnDrew Soldier, pioneered using this.

I just bought athletic tape for my rattan is that okay to wrap around to have better grip or no
@FMAPulse
@FMAPulse 4 года назад
That should be fine, I would avoid using certain types of tape where the adhesive makes the stick too sticky to hold.

@@Adnap69 Knowing that the stick is going to shred and break eventually, I usually just use electrical tape.
