At the beginning of a syllable, ㄹ is more like the spanish “r” than the english “r” sound. It’s like a mixture between the spanish “r” and the english “L”. At the end of a syllable (batchim), it is more like the english L but with your tongue on the roof of your mouth (the part up front that gets burnt by hot pizza!). :)
@johnnybaxter8078

I think you guys are little bit confused. Actually ㄹ might sound more like R to English speakers when it's between vowels. So you might think ㄹ like R in 노래, 파란색, and 사랑해. And also ㄹ might sound more like L when it comes at the beginning of the word or end of the word Ex) 라디오, 러시아, and 하늘. However Koreans don't distinguish those sounds. We consider those sounds the same thing and write them in ㄹ. So that's why I explained that you should just touch the back of your teeth! I'm so sorry if I made you confused.

We consider the ㄹ sound as a "rolled r" when it is not the 밧침. We do not have this sound natively in English but it comes from many of the romance languages that share our alphabet. Also you did a fantastic job with the video, I think I finally found out how to say the ㄹ more naturally when it isn't doubled or 밧침, 감사합니다 민지 씨!
@blackhawkX02
@blackhawkX02 6 лет назад
Minji Teaches Korean 민지 티치 코리안 I think the problem is that for fucking English speakers the R sound is not quite right, it doesn't sound like a R, as the romanization suggests, the biggest problem with romanization is that they combine sounds from other languages, not just English, in this case the sound of R and L in Spanish may be perfect to explain the difference, but in English it's just non sense, because the sound of R is completely different, the closest sound is when you combine letters such as TT or DD, like in the word "leTTer" in American accent.
@klla_km
@klla_km 6 лет назад
I know i shouldnt do this because I need to stop thinking of the character in "english" terms but i notice that at the start of words it does sound like an L, at the end it actually sounds like an L mixed with a Y (as in, you start saying L, but but before your tongue hits the teeth you widen your jaw like the end of a Y sound) and the middle of a word it does sound like an R (if there is a ㄹ at the end of a syllable, and then a ㄹ at the start of the next, it actually sounds like a rolled R almost). Just my obervations

So this is just my own understanding😅 ㄹ - R / L So we do notice that It's sometimes it has 'R' pronounciation and it's sometimes 'L' pronounciation. So if this symbol (ㄹ) can be found in the beginning and in the end, the pronounciation is letter "L" for example: Ramyeon (라면) - (L)amyeon Geojismal (거짓말) - Geojisma(L) Note: "L" pronounciation if this symbol (ㄹ) is in the first and in the last. And if this symbol (ㄹ) is between the 2 vowels, the pronunciation is 'R' for example: Korea (코리아) We can notice that this sign 'ㄹ' is between 2 vowels. Another example: Saranghae (사랑해) So it's between the 2 vowels so it's more of an 'R' sound. Note: pronounciation "R" if between the 2 vowels. (마자요?😅)

It is definitely true that it is not always the 'l' sound but for those of us whose pronunciation is way off (I've been battling with the ㄹ for 10 + years now) it's not a bad rule of thumb. But your explanation makes a lot more sense given the fact that I hear a combination of 'l' and 'r' sounds from my Korean students when they speak in English. Thanks for the varying perspective.

When u r having a hard time pronouncing other words with R & L, I noticed u change the intonation, the rise & fall seems your mistakes.

Someone double-check the way I just thought about this, please: When it comes to ㄹ, don't think about it as a sound, think about it as a certain position of the tongue touching the roof of the mouth. DH K's comment below helped me as an English speaker who has taken a little Spanish: it is a "front of the mouth R" like "eres" not a "further back R" like Tony the Tiger "grrrrrreat"

Oh, boy, am I late... Anyway, I enjoyed this and I wouldn't have commented because I feel pretty good about my pronunciation... Until you said the koreanization of McDonald's. I tried, but that one was so hard for me! 😂

Is a bit confusion how you do the sound with your tongue for ㄹ because the L from 라 sound form confortable but 하늘 sounds like you but the tongue is different mode and i don t know how

It seems like it sounds like an english R when it appears in the end of a word. Pronnounced like a spanish R when in the middle and like an L when its in the begginning.

i think it’s pronounced the same way every time, but since our american ears aren’t trained it sounds different sometimes. it’s definitely more like of “l” than “r”

I started learning korean. I thin'k when ㄹ is at top in the korean charecter's written form then it's R. Else it is L. When iyong is there then with shift it to the place of ㅇ and become R like if can write some dummy word like 말언. Then it ㄹ will shift to ㅇ place and since it is on top it will sound like Rae. Doe's anyone else also think it work's like that??

don't even get frustrated. Do you think Koreans care that they cant say R's and L's properly when they speak english? We don't! Sure, try and get it sounding right but don't get too caught up. The important part is being able to communicate (which you will be able to do regardless of how you pronounce your ㄹ)

I think half the battle is mental for someone like me (Canadian speaker). So I keep imagining I was born in Korea and my mouth is shaped for Korean language as I am learning. Maybe it will make my brain shift in that direction and then my face muscles and tongue will catch up. 🤣
