Hello! I'm John Russell. Let's continue our exploration of common words, phrases, and questions in American English.
In recent lessons, we have been learning about directions - telling others where to go.
We have learned how to talk about "left" and "right." But what happens if there are no turns? How do you tell someone to continue in the same direction?
This where the phrase "straight ahead" comes in.
When you say "straight ahead," you mean that the person listening to you should continue in the same direction - no turning.
We can improve our pronunciation by learning where the primary stress is in each word. This is the part of the word that is said louder or more forcefully.
We can clap in the place where the primary stress occurs.
Let's start with the word straight:

Now let's go to the word ahead:

When we compare the two words, we find that "straight" has primary stress on the beginning of the word, while "ahead" has stress after the beginning vowel sound.

You should also note that “straight ahead” involves three vowel sounds: one in “straight” and two in “ahead.”
Straight involves this vowel sound:
Ahead involves these two vowel sounds:
That's all for today! Keep up the good work!
