How to Propagate Christmas Cactus, Zygocactus or Epiphyllum. Propagation from cuttings is easy in a normal succulent and cactus potting mix. This short video shows how to propagate and successfully root a Christmas Cactus from a small stem or branch.
The botanical name is Schlumbergera and they are a Cacti species, which means they are a succulent. As they grow in very rocky ground good drainage is essential.
They are a winter flowering plant (hence the common name of Christmas Cactus in the northern hemisphere)) with the flowers appearing in the tips of the stems.Often grown in hanging baskets although they are easy grown in containers as well.
They do need some protection from direct sun as this tends to inhibit flowering. A frost free position is also essential.
One of the main problems with growing these plants is over watering, so always wait until the soil drys a little before watering and use a free draining potting mix.
After the plant has bloomed, wait a few weeks and then lightly prune, this will increase branching and give more flowers the next year.
We use minimal fertiliser, a little slow release fertiliser in spring, around 1/4 of the recommended application.
Some growers use a liquid fertiliser instead once in spring and again in summer.

I love it. My sister's boyfriend threw out this plant and said he 'hated plants'. So I said, these grow beautiful flowers, I will save them and grow beautiful plants from it. Thanks for this guide, thanks to it I will prove him wrong for being such an insensitive prick by growing these malnourished plant cuttings into something beautiful.

Thanks Marinus, keep it in a fairly dark position from end of summer to winter. Also give it cold nights and hold back on the water during this period and it should flower well. We are doing a video on that soon.

No water ? I have tried everything but mine always crinkle up and go hard or, if I put in damp composts they go brown and soggy ..... So, for me, they aren't the easiest to propagate and I have 45 dead cuttings to prove it ! I did once get a 50% success rate with two cuttings suspended in water.....do I need to move to Australia or keep one of those pretty budgies ? Aha! The secret is you mix in the cocktail poo first I bet . Yours despondently from England 🇬🇧. PS great video but nothing works for me !😢

Hello, James! For me, two things have worked. Firstly, I have a "prop box" aka propagation box. It's a clear plastic box with an inch of damp sphagnum moss in the bottom. I lay the cuttings on top of the sphagnum moss, cover it with plastic wrap and leave it under a grow light for about 8-10 hours a day. Secondly, I put them in a skinny, tall glass vase with a bit of water only covering ¼ to ½ of the bottom pad. I put a piece of plastic wrap on the top with a peice of yarn tied around the neck of the vase to hold the plastic in place. I also puncture a few small holes in the plastic with an earring. Now, the only issue I've found is with my prop box. Because of the humidity, every pad on a cutting grows roots. So if I have a cutting four pads long, each of the 4 pads have a beautiful root system. I can't imagine losing them, so I've started dividing them into one pad segments and planting them. That's as far as I've gotten. Hope this helps! Raven

They can be slow to get going so patience is needed, Guessing that the soil is good, and light and temperature is right Maybe a little fertiliser, they like magnesium, so 1 teaspoon of espom salts to 4lts (1gal) of water during the growing season may help.

@@johnnyAGardening leaf joint yes! Out of sun yes! Not over watering ? Not watering at all after first drench; planting tip Yes! I am in England temperatures at the moment can be as low as 10 deg C at night . I have tried heat pad and grow lights also . It is very frustrating and disheartening when I videos where successful rooting takes place in just water, planted in half depth, just tips , calluses over , pla ted fresh etc but mine just go hard and brown no matter what I do
@johnnyAGardening

@@sparkfishes OK, - I am guessing that its too much water, so maybe try just damp soil, no heavy watering and just a little mist spray once a week. I will try to contact a lady who is a bit of a collector and see if she can throw some light on the problem.
@sparkfishes
@sparkfishes 4 года назад
@@johnnyAGardening that is kind of you . Since posting this I have had some success : 1in 4 produced roots suspended in water. 3 out of 10 in almost dry compost and light spray every time the top layer is dry . Non from dry layered 15 cuttings tried Oh! and I have tried using three different rooting compounds on various methods and possibly 7- 10 plants. I have bought rooted cuttings in orange; white; purple; red and pink ( Easter cacti and Christmas cacti ) and managed to kill some of those ! Getting the water content right seems to be the answer so it baffles me why they can grow roots in just water but die if the water content is not just right in compost . Suicide has been prevented by some success propagating leaves from succulents by placing on top of almot dry compost .

@@alyanamichaels6176 Hi Alyana, thats good information. First check that they are planted the right way up, if they are upside down, that will be a problem, so replant them if that is so. I guess given current temperatures in MN they indoors. So warmth (not hot) and good light will be important. Also a free draining potting/soil mix. Indoors humidity can be low, so spritz (mist spray) now and the, (every second day maybe). It also sounds that you may have planted the cuttings a little late for optimum growth. I would be contacting the grower that you purchased them from as well and asking them. HOWEVER, keep trying with them as they are remarkably resiliant.
