How to propagate fiddle leaf fig | Using water and a vase

Propagating a fiddle leaf fig can be easy if done correctly. First, take a cutting that is 5-8 leaves long. Second, Remove the bottom leaves so there a 2-4 leaves remaining. Be careful not to get any sap on your hands. Third, apply rooting hormone to the base of the cutting. Fourth, put cutting in vase filled with water. If the water starts to become milky dump and add fresh water. After 2-3 weeks you should start to see roots emerge. I usually let mine continue to grow for another 6-10 weeks. Once the roos are mature and full I will pot up using a pinebark potting mix.

Thank you for the video. My fig leaf tree cutting has already rooted and I transplanted in soil in a temporary small pot. I have also done this with my standalone fig leaf propagation . They are doing good but I wanted to plant them along side the fig tree themselves but it’s a large growing box. Is it wise to go ahead and plant them in the large box at this time or should I keep them in smaller pots? I’m not sure if they like to be root bound for a stretch of time. Thx

Hi Plant Doc for posting. I’m going to cut mine for propagation. It’s too tall and spindly. You said to cut and dip in rooting powder. My question is the timeline. When you first cut do you let the stem dry out before placing it in soil? Or do you cut and immediately dip in rooting powder into water? I’d think the powder would wash off? Thank you for your help

I got a free “busted” fiddle leaf plant from Walmart. (Got an aloe too🤩) The top half was broken and it was over watered. I cut the top half completely off and left the bottom half in dirt. Bottom half is already having new growth and it’s only been a week. The top half. I had to cut all the leaves off because they were severely damaged and had what looked like mites. I have it sitting in a south window with direct to mostly indirect light. I also live in central Texas. I put it in dirt. Should I put it in water? And should I provide more humidity for it? My house usually stays pretty dry around 35 to 50% during the winter.
@Dr.Warren

If you already have it in soil I would leave it. But yes get some humidity on it. They are native to the rain forest and will do better rooting with some humidity.

Hello from the Sunshine State of Florida! Thank you for sharing your video. Recently, I pruned my 10-foot Fiddle Tree in my front yard for the first time. I have propagated my Fiddle Leaf Fig into a large mason jar, which has been sitting on my patio table for the past three weeks in shaded areas with plenty of light. I have been checking it every week and giving it fresh water as well. It still has a healthy branch and four beautiful leaves. However, I have noticed that no roots have grown yet. Instead, there is a lot of thick white substance growing around the branches. I am not sure what it is, and I have searched online but couldn't find any information about it. I was wondering if you could share your thoughts or advice with me. Please help! 🌿🌱🪴

Hello The Plant Doctor!👋🏼 I came across your video because I needed to know how to propagate a🪴FLFT. Yesterday my family and I was outside picking Mulberries and I noticed my Parents’ big, beautiful FLFT, and spontaneously broke-off (yikes!) a little 1’ stem from my Parents’FLFT. I assumed I could propagate it since the stem had nodes and new-green growth on the end. I’ve been wanting to buy one for a while, and it never occurred to me to try to propagate from theirs to save me a couple hundred bucks!🤣 I wanted say hello to you bc you mentioned that you live in North Alabama! I live in North-Central Alabama in a city called Gardendale. I’m not sure you’ve ever heard of Gardendale but you’ve most likely passed through here if traveling to the Gulf-Orange Beach, AL or Gulf Shores, AL. I’m about 10 miles north of Birmingham. Many people stop on I•65•{ Fieldstown Road }•(my exit), to grab something to eat or get gas before you hit the Birmingham traffic. 😃 Just curious to know what area of North Alabama you’re from. What a small world, huh? May God Bless and keep you- and your loved ones too! Kim 😃✝️🇺🇸
