In this video, I will show you how I propagate Japanese Maple from cuttings. I am using 4 different soils in this video. From my experience, it's important to take the right cuttings at the right time, cut with clean scissors or knife, keep them moist, stabilize them so they dont move, protect them from direct sun/wind but provide the necessary airflow, and some heat from the bottom (either ground heat or heat mat) if possible.

Welcome to our channel! We are located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest (PNW)! We are in the middle of our journey to create a beautiful Japanese maple garden and develop bonsai trees for everyone to enjoy. Our garden is under construction but we hope to open it up to public in the near future! Follow us if you love Japanese maples and want to know what's happening in our garden! In this channel, we focus on walking thru our Japanese maple bonsai garden throughout all seasons, discussing how to prune Japanese maples, how to air layer Japanese maples, how to propagate Japanese maples and how to take care of them including pruning, fertilizing, etc.

My grandma has a beautiful (looks like maybe dwarf red dragon) in her front yard. I am going to try this so I will always have something special from her. Japan has the most beautiful plants and trees on the planet. Thank you 🙏

Nice! Cutting propagation is a bit tricky but worth a try! Also I recommend you try air layering!

That is great. May Iask if you fertilize those cuttings? The new devoloped trees that you mentioned in this video (2 years old) from which source do they get the nutrients and stay in such a healthy condition?

no I dont but I heard liquid fertilizer or spraying menedel increases the chance :)

I had read in a book that shishigashira cannot be propagated by cuttings but apparently it is not true. Great videos as always!!

Great job, thanks for the video! Are there any updates? I want to see which mix works the best for you. I tried with a 50/50 mix of perlite and a peat-based soil but I don't see too many survivors... Do you think a fine pine bark substrate could also work? I was planning to try this next season...

Hello, thank you very much! Basically lots of them that were planted in small particle sized soil (small akadama/akadama fines/fine bark) are still holding leaves and alive even now. However when I checked them 1-2 months ago, they weren't rooted yet. I'm on a business trip now but will check them out when I m back and update!

For some reason if I don't cover my tree cuttings with some transparent/translucent plastic, they all wither in 1 hour. I've been able to propagate my lemon tree by making cuttings and covering them to keep the leaves moist, I hope I will finally propagate maple cuttings this way this year.

Yeah it depends on where you live too. If your climate and hot and dry, it would be better to place it in a shade (with some sun in the morning) and cover it to keep the moisture. Good luck!!

is it ok to repot at this time of the year also?
@MomijiEn

Generally early spring is a good time to to repot that requires root work. If you just want to slip pot it to a bigger container without disturbing the roots, you can do that pretty much anytime.
