You're a natural teacher, Johnny, and the relaxed and methodical manner in which you express things makes them sink in! Excellent. Thanks very much for the video. But I did have a question about subsequent watering, when next and how often?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 6 лет назад
We give the cuttings a mist spray through the top of the bottle, frequency depends on how hot it is. Say twice a week. Every two weeks I generally take the cover off and text the soil for moisture (stick my finger down into it) never really dry and never really wet. If if begins to dry I give it a light watering with a liquid seaweed fertiliser. You can generally see if the soil is drying by looking at the colour,
@ClariceAust

Thanks for that. It's wonderful to be able to propagate herbs; I've spent so much money on replacing them over the years!

Great Video, I definitely learned something here.. I'm in South Florida and have a nice German Thyme plant growing in a large pot... I started it from seed, and have friends and family asking me to grow them one.. Using this method will increase my chances of success, taking cuttings from an already successful, flourishing plant.. I didn't know I could do this.. Thanks for posting..

very confusing and from the distance you filmed the first cutting, could not see the leaves left on the cutting. It looked completely stripped. Then on the close-up you showed cuttings with leaves left on. Was confusion to me what to strip off and what to leave on. I had to watch it several times to try to figure it out.

Hello Sheri, the water method is is little hit and miss, the roots that form can be very fragile and difficult to then get going in soil. Be patient, the soil method will work.

Hey John, Like i said they always don't survive the plant is totally dead i think these need some kind of food or something like "miracle plant food" because I wanted to grow about five other herbs but they always die and i look at my plants every day to see ( they sit by my window up until 6pm it's very sunny )how they are doing, the only herbs that survive is basil which i bought 2 years ago i would like to know your thoughts on this matter?
@johnnyAGardening

For the new cuttings maybe to much sun, especially by a window, filtered light only, especially in the afternoon, until they get going

You can use a diluted form if you want, however the cuttings should not need it to strike properly.

I live in Malaysia. Just bought me my very 1st pot of thyme. I notice they're pretty delicate though and they smell of 'ajwain' seeds - really strong aromatic spice seeds we use in Indian cooking. Are they the same, I wonder?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 7 лет назад
Hello Naleeni, Ajwain, I think, is Trachyspermum ammi , widely used in India and Pakistan - and it is actually related to Parsley. HOWEVER the seeds of Ajwain do have a strong thyme flavour / aroma. So not the same, but yes the aroma is similar. Also known as Carom..

@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 7 лет назад
Wait to water until the soil drys out a little on the top. Moist, however never wet and soggy. Also ensure that the drainage is good. It will depend on the time of year and the position of the pot. If under cover, around once a week or even two weeks. Poke your finger into the soil to see how moist it is.

What season do you recommend propagating them like you did? Spring or summer? I am doing it inside atm and I’m in Australia too, down in cold vic near Melbs. I have had them in water for weeks now (changing it every day or 2) and still no roots but they are still alive. So I’m ready to give up on the water method and put them straight into dirt.
@johnnyAGardening

John, great video I am a slow learner at my age. Two questions....1. Are you using plain potting soil? 2. Will thyme propagate and grow well indoors on a sunny windowsill? We are in winter here I cold framed my big thyme plant and took cuttings to propagate inside.
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 6 лет назад
Hello Brianna, yes we used a normal potting soil for that demo. I think it could strike well on a sunny windowsill, and would at least give it a try. ALSO - You can sometimes find rooted stems around the base of larger plants, these can be removed and will grow well if replanted with the roots attached. And its never to late to learn, keeps you young......

Hi Mr. John, What does the Bottle do in this video??? I live in Orlando FL. and it's always Hot... Should I still use the plastic bottle??? Jacqueline
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 7 лет назад
The bottle helps maintain humidity as well as warmth and reduce transpiration. It is useful in warmer climates to maintain the humidity, in your climate that will depend on the time of the year. I would suggest in your zone that the if you use the bottle (and i would) that it is out of direct sun in dappled shade. Also make sure the cap is OFF the bottle. As soon as you see signs of growth, remove the bottle

Just bought a pot of thyme but it seems to be drying itself out. Watering once everyday as was told by the seller. Why is it drying up?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 6 лет назад
Is it a small new cutting ? If so the root system may be under developed. Keep it in a cool yet light position for a while. If its a larger plant most likely the plant needs re potting, the soil mix may be exhausted.
@jeffreykoh560
@jeffreykoh560 6 лет назад
It's a full grown plant from a nursery. I had it in the shade and watered daily after bringing it home. Maybe that's the problem!
@johnnyAGardening

Thyme likes sun and well drained soil. So overwatering in shade will cause problems. If the potting soil / mix is good cut back on the watering and give it more sun.
